How to Prepare for the Chemistry Regents Exam

Updated on January 18, 2012

The New York State Board of Regents creates the Regents Exams. NY high school students take these exams each year. The Chemistry Regents Exam is one of the most challenging tests. School parents should learn the preparation tips for this chemistry test.

The Oswego City School District has one of the most effective resources for studying for the Chemistry Regents Exam. Look in the Resources at the bottom of this article. Click on the link to the main chemistry page on the Oswego website. On that page, click on "Online Resources" in the menu for review resources.

On the next page, you will see a table of contents. These are the topics that are tested on the Chemistry Regents test. If you click on the individual topics, you will see a list of links for online chemistry lessons. There is a great deal of repeat information, so do not use these links to study just yet.

The first place you should start is the textbook used to teach chemistry in your high school. This is bound to have the bulk of information that you need to prepare for your Chemistry Regents Exam. Just do your best to absorb all that material first.

After thoroughly studying your chemistry textbook, you can test yourself with a Chemistry Regents practice test. The New York State Education Department Office of Assessment Policy, Development, and Administration has a practice test from 2011 online. Using the link below, you can find a PDF of the released exam, an answer book, a scoring key and rating guide, and a conversion chart to change raw scores to scaled scores.

Parents or teachers should print out the Chemistry Regents practice test and the answer sheet, giving both to students for practicing on the chemistry test after they have completed their textbooks.

The student can then assess his ability to pass the Chemistry Regents Exam. The final step is then to go back to the textbook and online chemistry-lesson resources and strengthen any weak areas discovered while taking the practice test.
