Lottery Number Selection Tips from a Mathematician

Whether you play the lottery as a hobby or as a serious financial investment, chances are you've probably spent more money than you've won over the years. What you need is a system, a method of picking lottery numbers that are guaranteed to win, or at least a method of avoiding numbers that will lose. Follow this guide to picking winning lottery numbers and riches can be yours. I'm a trained mathematician so I know what I am talking about.

Here are some lottery numbers that won't win.
Here are some lottery numbers that won't win.

Lottery Secret #1: Pick the Right Number of Numbers

Are you playing a lottery called "Cash 5" or "Pick 5" or some other game involving the number five? Here's a tip from the winners: You can only win if you pick exactly five numbers. Nobody has ever won a "Pick 5" game by picking four or eight numbers. You can take this secret to the bank.

This lottery player knows picking exactly five numbers is the surest way to win Cash 5.

Lottery Secret #2: Don't Pick Negative Numbers or π

Nobody has ever won the lottery by playing a -3 or π or any other such weird numbers. Stick with positive whole numbers and you will have a much better chance of winning.

10 out of 10 lottery winners recommend avoiding negative numbers.

Lottery Secret #3: Pick a Number in the 20s

Did you know that in the Mega Millions Lottery there is a 52% chance the winning ticket will contain at least one number between 20 and 29? In the Powerball Lottery, the probability that the winning ticket will contain at least one number in the 20s is a staggering 73%? The math doesn't lie; you must pick a number in the 20s.

This is some math.

Lottery Secret #4: Do Pick Birthday Numbers

Lottery strategy guides always say to avoid picking birthday numbers, the numbers between 1 and 31, because everyone else is supposedly playing these numbers. As the logic goes, if the winning combination features lots of birthday numbers, the jackpot will likely be split among lots of people. But this "secret" has been around so long that now the opposite is true! Now nobody picks birthday numbers. Therefore, you should pick most of your numbers from between 1 and 31.

Always pick your kids' birthday numbers.

Lottery Secret #5: Use the Fortune Cookie Numbers

People are naturally attracted to you. Tonight you will have a revealing dream. Land is always on the mind of a bird in flight. There is no greater happiness than seeing your family prosper. The greatest risk is not taking one. Your lucky numbers are 4, 17, 22, 24, 41.

You can win a fortune with a fortune cookie.

Lottery Secret #6: Grow Out Your Fingernail or Find a Dime

You have zero chance of winning the Powerball or Mega Millions jackpot, but you do have decent odds of winning with lotto scratch tickets, which don't even require you to pick numbers.

Nice subject. As far as my mathematical knowledge reaches, it is not to be possible for 'something' to be fully random. Everything complies to some kind of mathematical law. Some things to simple laws, and some things to very complex laws, we didn't figured out yet.

The random function of a computer for example is not random at all. It consist of a counter that runs in continuous loops from for example 0 to 65536. At the moment the program wants to pick a 'random' number, it 'grabs' a number from the counter. The counter returns a number that reflects the position of the counter at that specific time. The random number is not really random, but in fact it is a result of a 'law'. But to the user it looks fully random.

So, if we are able to understand the laws behind random process, you're able to win the lottery :) It is said though not to be easy...

Do these tricks really work? I always pick 23 in my set of numbers, but the most I ever won was $10. I'm trying to find a serious lottery system.

A real trick is to never play lotteries that are drawn by computer with tickets that are also computer generated. They are anything but 'random.' The computer keeps track of the numbers on the tickets sold and then on the day of the 'drawing' it selects a combination that minimizes the amount of winnings they have to pay out. Always play a lottery with actual balls draw from a drum.

My husband loved to buy his two Powerball tickets each week. I rarely buy them. I had not bought any since he passed away in 2014. When the Powerball got so large my daughter insisted I buy a ticket. While in line, the man behind me said his daughter had also insisted he get one.

I played the birthdays of my granddaughters and the number years we were married. I missed the winning numbers by 3. I won $7.00.

A man in our town and a friend of my daughter won the Powerball a few years ago.

oh jeez another con artist i gotta deal with and your so called lottery system sucks too! i got scammed for over $1500 with a lottery system recommended on a forum and in never won EVEN a dollar for all the probably hundreds of $ i spend buying tickets each month. this guy said he won over something like $79k every year with his number picking system well i tried it and the only JACKpot i won is jack diddly squat!!! like an idiot i bought a DIFFERENT system for $200 its suppose to give you the best pick 3 numbers. i only won twice with that system and i'll let mr. mathematician guess how much i had to spend to win that chump change. how much you win with your system of not picking negative numbers??? they don't even have negative numbers on the payslip!!! i'm no trained mathematician but the system is rigged. a player can't spend as much as i have and not even win once over $100 prize on some of these tickets. don't get me STARTED on the scratchers!

Dear Lynda, thank you for pointing out that pay slips do not have negative numbers, this will make picking winning numbers even easier.

Here is the number for the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network, covering the US and Canada: 1-800-522-4700. I urge you to call it.

I work at a gas station that sells pick 3 and I win pick 3 more often than the probabilities say I should. During my shift I keep track of all the pick 3 numbers I sell, just like the lottery main computer does. Then a few minutes before they close the drawing I buy numbers that haven't been picked.

I've lost more than I've spent, but not by a lot. But I can't refine the method to turn an actual profit. I figure I need to buy a lot more tickets to make it work and then it would look suspicious and I would get fired. I'm enrolling back in school to get a real job and won't have the data anymore anyways.

My dad's quote to me "All you need to win the lottery is a system. If the system doesn't work sell the system!"

Very interesting, (*_*). Maybe you can sell your system to Lynda.

Hello I left a question on other article. I never play lottery. Daily pick 3 is a scam. They will draw the numbers that nobody has picked. The computer records all the numbers people play on a day that makes it easy for the computer to minimize the payout.

well im no trained mathematician like you lol but i know pick a number in the 20's is bs. your mathematical odds are better if you pick one number in each group of 10, one in the zero's, one in the ten's, one in the 20's, one in the 30's and one in the 40's. think about it. things are more likely to be spaced out than clumped together.

The real lottery systems are not advertised for sale. The people who run the lotteries read all the popular guides and when they find one that works they change the lottery to close the loophole, rendering the system worthless. I am close to finding the system for Pick 4. I have dozens of Excel spreadsheets with lottery results for the past 6 years and some patterns are emerging.

hi i don't know if you still answer questions here but how do you do pick 3 to win more often? i play it alot here in florida they have all these options like Straight, Box, Straight/Box, 1-OFF, Combo, Front Pair, or Back Pair. i do straight because it's simple and the payoff is bigger, but i hardly win. i don't really understand all these other options they say it's like playing more numbers but you get paid less if you win. what's better?

Hi Zoz, I wrote another article on Pick 3 lotteries if you want to take a look. I think the best system for you is to play the games that you understand and enjoy, as long as you aren't buying more lottery tickets than you can afford. Best not to worry about the other side game options if you don't understand them.
