Real Live People With Horns and Tails!
The Stuff of Legends
I recently wrote about human beings that were born or later developed horns. We all know the legends of horned people or gods. Pan, the Devil and so on. I firmly believe that many of the legends and myths that we remember today is just a genetic memory of people or peoples who have had these amazing physical differences.
Even today in India if someone is born with an anomaly there is always the outcry that he is the reincarnation of a famous God. Who's to say they are wrong? Not me. But these days, with all the medical and scientific know how, we have tried to categorize each and every anomaly and give it a scientific 'cold' name.
I say 'cold' purely because by taking out the stuff of legends and turning them into a medical anomaly I believe we have lost something special.
Who's to say these people should not be treated with respect? What's wrong with giving them a higher status like they do in India? I think its marvelous.
At the beginning of time when man first turned his eyes to the stars and mysteries around him, he would try to categorize not only the world but the amazing sights and disfigurements of the other human beings. They began to worship them as Gods because of their differences in appearance.
And who's to say that maybe these people were not Godlike in stature and soul?
Nobody really knows how or when we as humans got here. Maybe we are missing a huge chunk of history that has been completely hidden due to the fact that we have just not found any proof yet. And maybe these modern equivalents of ancient Gods and Myths may just be our missing links to the past.
The Horned Ones
Whether you believe they are good or evil, there is no getting away from the fact that the mention of people with horns will always cause a shudder within certain populations of the world.
In England, the Horned Man is known as Herne the Hunter. In the Bible the beast with horns is the Devil. And in Greek mythology Pan is the God of wine and debauchery. And they all have horns.
But the reality is that people today have horns. It can be caused through a trauma to the spot where the horn is, or skin disease. Either way, the horn is made of Keratin the same as our fingernails and hair.
Holoprosencephaly or Cyclopia Syndrome.
Cyclops is another Greek myth and legend. The Giant with the one eye. He was said to be a member of a primordial race of giants.
According to legend there were three cyclopes, Brontes, Steropes and Arges. These were the sons of Uranus and Gaia brothers of the Titans from Greek myth.
But once again truth is stranger than fiction.
Cyclopia, also known as cyclocephaly is a congenital disorder where the brain does not separate as it should within the womb as an embryo.
In other words it doesn't divide the orbits of the eyes into two eye cavities. Usually in these cases the nose does not develop or appears elsewhere on the head or body. The syndrome will be caused by toxins that have invaded the body, or purely genetic defects.
Human Vestigiality. Or People with Tails.
Human vestigiality is a strange phenomenon occurring in both people and animals. Vestigiality literally means 'Lost through evolution.'
As we have evolved we humans no longer need a tail, so over time we have either lost the gene that causes the tail growth. Or more to the point the actual gene has been turned off.
But occasionally by a fault of birth the gene somehow becomes active once again. We all have a stubby little tail in the womb which becomes absorbed throughout the pregnancy.
There are various forms of tails and some doctors believe that many are caused by a form of spina bifida.
In Legend the Greeks believe that the Satyr or Pan were born with tails and were associated with fertility. The Romans later named it Faunus. Just think Mr Tumnus from the Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe!
Premature Aging Progeria.
Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome Or Advanced Age
There are many tales in history of little people, or Goblins. Creatures that look very like humans but are wizened and old, with large protuberances such as ears and noses. Along with these features they were also said to speak in a strange voice.
Once again we have a modern physiological anomaly that is very similar to these old fairy tales. The name is Progeria.
So what is it?
It is a form of speed aging. The cause is an extremely rare genetic disorder where the signs of aging start from birth.
There is believed to be only one in eight million births. The reason for the premature aging is something to do with cell growth. To read in depth please go to:
Relating to one of the 200 forms of Dwarfism, Primordial dwarfism is said to only effect about 100 people in the world at one time.
Caused by a mutant gene from both parents, there is no cure for this as the problem starts within in the womb.
Babies are born much smaller initially than other babies, but it can take years for the doctors to diagnose this problem.
Its said that many won't live past the age of 30 purely because the disability causes vascular problems.
Once again the talk of small people in myths and legends could possibly be caused by this genetic defect in the past.
Along with the genus Homo Floresiensis (the Hobbits) found on the Island of Flores back in 2003.
These were to thought to be just an abnormality of the brain that was causing them to be tiny. But after study, the scientists realised that actually the small people found were in fact a whole new species of human.
Throughout history, myths and legends and of course the Bible there have been stories of Giants.
We all know the story of David and Goliath, but what about the real McCoy?
There has always been arguments about whether these people were actual giants or not.
If you think about it, the normal human height throughout history has always been pretty small.
Even back in the 1500's King Henry and his court were quite short.
The armour that he wore tends to give the game away.
It wouldn't even fit me. So being a giant in those days is pretty relative to the locals.
But maybe not. As you can see by the photos, we do have giants today. They may not be up there will Gulliver's Travels but they are tall.
This is caused by Pituitary Gigantism caused by a tumour.
The Tallest person in the world today is Sultan Kosen from Turkey!
