If You Had 3 Wishes, What Would You Wish For?
I am not the kind of guy who would go around thinking about what I would do if I was offered 3 wishes. I'm very practical and I know that this kind of thing just happens in your dreams. Of course I do enjoy stories about genies granting 3 wishes, or selling your soul to the devil for all the wishes that your heart desires. But when the novel or movie is over, it's back to the real world, where it is still possible to have your wishes come true, but you need to work for it.
But then again, if Sarah Palin can run for the 2008 United States presidential elections, a genie that grants 3 wishes might not be such a far-fetched possibility after all. And while I will definitely not sell my soul to the devil, he just might need a favor or two from me, and knowing what to ask for in return would be pretty handy.
And so, what would I wish for if I am granted 3 wishes?
I would have thought that having all the money that I would ever need would appeal to me. And it does appeal to me. It will be a life changing event. And while I will continue to do many of the things that I'm doing now, some aspects of my life will change for the better. And I can do more of the things that I want to do.
But that will not be among one of my 3 wishes. Somehow, the thought of free money just does not seem to appeal to me. The thought of money that I do not have to work for, that is handed to me on a platter, just does not gel. Perhaps money, without the effort spent in earning it, is worth less in my eyes. It actually does make sense. After doing whatever it takes to make, say, a million dollars, I would be a million dollars richer. But the journey to the million dollars would have gained me so much more in terms of maturity, experience, knowledge and character.
What I will ask for as my first wish will be a soulmate. Not just a girlfriend, or a wife, but a person who I can truly regard as my other half. My soulmate will probably be female, and I would expect that she will eventually become my wife. I will expect that we will have a natural affinity to each other, and know what each other is thinking with a single look. We may not agree all the time, and maybe even quarrel at times, but through all of those, there will never be a question of our loyalty and bond with each other.
My second wish will be time. I would wish for all the time in the world to do all the things that I want to do. I don't want to have to prioritize, and just do the more important things. I want to have time to do them all and more! And I even want time to waste time, to kick back and watch television the whole day, or to relax on the beach and do absolutely nothing.
And you know what? I don't seem to know what to do for my third wish. It isn't that there aren't things that I want or need, but they do seem rather trivial to be wasted on something as special as a wish. Besides, I do enjoy the journey, and most of the time, the journey can be as enjoyable as the destination. So, what am I going to do about my third wish?
I could do something for the world but the world seems so messed up these days that I would not know where to start. And I remember Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty in which he played God and we all know he made a right mess of things by simply giving people what they wanted. I get the feeling that simply solving the obvious problems of the world is just going to cause other problems elsewhere. And besides, it is going to take much more than one wish to set everything right.
And so, for my last wish, I would like to wish for 3 more wishes. That way, I'd never run out of wishes. I just hope that there isn't a clause in the genie guidebook that says that wishing for another 3 wishes is an invalid wish, and render my first 2 wishes null and void.
