Interesting facts about the two dollar bill.

Updated on September 6, 2016

As a Boy Scout, Greg learned the value of collecting rare items. Coins are his favorite. Greg writes about coins and other collectibles...

It's Still Here

Some think that the two-dollar bill is out of circulation; that is not true. Fact is:our mint would probably print more of them,if we would use them.

For the collector, they can be the ultimate. I would probably give my wife for one of the early ones; "just joking honey."

Here is a list of some of our two dollar bills, who was on them, and other interesting info on them.

The First $2 bill

In 1862 the first two dollar bill was printed. It had a portrait of Alexander Hamilton on it. In 1869 it was redesigned with Thomas Jefferson on it. It also said Treasury note on it instead of United States note. In 1874 that was changed and some other minor changes.{removed some of the green tint}.

In 1886 they were issued with a portrait of civil war general Winfield Scott Hancock. These were also silver certificates and could be redeemed for silver worth two dollars.

In 1891 a new silver certificate came to be with treasury secretary William Windom on it.

Educational Series

1896 ushered in the "educational series" two dollar bills.

The front depicts science offering steam to manufacturing and commerce. The backs had portraits of Robert Fulton and Samuel Morse.

In 1899 the silver certificate had a portrait of George Washington in the midst of agriculture and mechanics.

Every note up until this point was a somewhat large note. You would have had to fold it to put it in todays wallets.

Small Notes

In 1929 the design was changed much like the one we have today. It could now fit in our billfolds.

In 1963 In God We Trust was added and they could no longer pay out in silver. In 1966 two dollar bills were discontinued.

Bicentennial

In 1976,our bicentennial year, they were reintroduced. The one pictured was a first day issue; if you had one you could go to the post office and get it stamped. Quite the collectable!!!

Will They Stay

The last printing of two-dollar bills was in 2003. As I said before, the treasury says there are many out there in circulation. How many are really in people's collections? Will we print more??

I guess we wait and see.

I have two 2 dollar bills which have the green circular logo and many people keep telling me they are not real but they are!.

in the picture above it has a 3 on each corner, well, mine has 11 on one note and 12 on the other!! don't know how significant this is..

I love the portrait on the back which has about 50 people in it! but i have no idea what it symbolises..!

      Thanks Froggy Great Hub..

nope, not rich compu, but they are worth more than 2$ apiece.Take a look at the ebay auctions up there--It will give you a good idea on value.

I once about 4 years ago bought an educational series 2$ bill at auction, they thought it was foreign money.I paid $5 for it;sold it couple years back for 900$.That was a real good investment!!You have to be careful though, there are counterfeiters out there.

      I thought not!!

That's a nice markup! good going;) I will check out Ebay just for curious reasons, . i won't sell them as they make fine art on the wall and with regards to forgery problems i could always double check at a bank, but i doubt ill ever bother!

If your doing more of these hubs, stuff about a million dollar hub would be good!?

      Just a thought;)

I read in Utne magazine that strip bars give $2 bills as change. Basically, and all the details can be found at the link below, since $2 bills are a bit rare and having a lot of them could cause family and friends to ask questions, most strip club patrons use them as tips. The club and the strippers make more money. Ingenuous really. In Canada the smallest bill is a $5....

The story can be found at: http://www.utne.com/2007-09-01/Politics/The-Two-Do...

Nice hub, Froggy213. I have three or four $2 bills in my little collection. I think one is the 1963 series and the others are the 1976 variety. As far as I know, they didn't come from strip shows.

I keep every $2 bill I get. My daughter was given five of them in change just this week. They're mine now! Three of them were the 1976 variety with the 11's and 12's like mentioned above. Two of them were from 1995 and have 6's on them. But, I have lots of them put away that I got 18 years ago at a baby shower for my first child.

If you go to www.wheresgeorge.com you will see a great many people trying to get the two dollar bill back in circulation. The problem is that people like to collect them... If you go to a local bank, you can ask and they will usually sell you some two dollar bills for $2 each. In answering to Sid, the two dollar bill really should be worth $2. You could get more from a gullible person who thinks they are rare, but really you can get them from pretty much any bank.

$2 bills from 1976 - current are worth only $2 and not a penny more, they are very common - and still printed. If you ask your bank for them in change they probably have them. Federal reserves have them in stock. The mint says they print them as needed and the reason they don't print more is the lack of demand. I ask for them at my bank regularly and I receive 1976 bills 30% of the time - common bills have no extra value - take them out of your collections and spend them, they will never be valuable because so many people hold on to them.

I came across an old bank envelope from when I worked at a local savings and loan (remember those?) back in 1975-76. In the envelope are three first-day-issue issue stamped 1976 $2 bills (I was given the job of taking a whole bunch of the brand new bills to the post office the morning we received them in April 1976 to have the stamped first-day issue for our customers who might want them.

The bills are still in absolutely perfect uncirculated condition, as the only time they have every been out of the original envelope were those times I pulled them out myself briefly just to look at them. They all have the green serial numbers and green Dept of Treasury logo on them, as well as a 6 in each corner. Stamped April 13 1976.

Any idea how much they might be worth?

Oh....I also have a 1953 issue $2 bill in the envelope that is in almost perfect condition (one slight wrinkle running horizontally part-way across the center of the bill, and it looks like it may have been folded once.

I have a 2 dollar bill in a plastic case. It has 5's on the edges and my grandpa gave it to me. He lightly wrote $23.00 on the front of the case and assured me that was probably a lot more. Ive heard from earlier posts that it is only worth $2 but im not convinced. Its signed by the "secretary of the treasury" and the "treasurer of the united states" and says "series 1976". It has a green stamp over the word TWO that says "the department of the treasury" and it has "E12427082A" in green. It says that in two places. It has a black stamp with an E in the middle and says "Federal Reserve. Bank of Richmond, Virginia. It shows Benjamin Franklin on the front and the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the back. On the frontside, ut says "F2" in one spot and "F3" in another. The "2" and the "3" are written as exponents. Its in PERFECT condition (no scratches, tears, rips, or folds). Is it worth more than just $2!?!?

I have a two dollar bill with a green serial number, seal, and a green star. It is in mint condition series 1976 with a B (New York ) seal I have two others, with A seals ( Boston) but no star. Are these worth anything? What does the star mean? Thank you

That is a very good question Susan!

First, yes the bill you have is worth more than $2 if in mint condition. I would probably give 5-7$ for it.

Second; the star means that the original bill with that serial numbered was damaged and destroyed by the mint. They then printed another using the star to signify that.

I have a 2$ Bill that has "Arizona" stamped just above the upper-right Serial Number. Im unsure about this being rare, valuable beyond face value, or what. Any info would be much appreciated.

      Bill Info:

      2003 A series

      K Federal Bank (Dallas, Texas)

These were 1st issue bills and you can probably get anywhere from $8 to $15 on e bay for one.

At one time, you could turn those in to the government and get paid in silver. Not anymore. If your bill is in good shape it is worth more than $2

Ree ree, if it is in very nice condition, I would take a stab at about 8-10$
