Is Another Ice Age On The Way?

Updated on July 16, 2010

With a strangely quiet sun cyle and record breaking cold snaps this summer, some think we are headed for an ice age.

Before you laugh, know that the US Pentagon takes a coming ice age very seriously, as it would greatly impact national security.

There are also many, well respected weather scientists who believe we are alreay in pre ice age conditions.

Personally I have no idea what to think about this, but I thought it would be interesting to imagine life as if we really were in the middle of an ice age. I would assume that no one aspect of our lives would remain the same.

Could this be your backyard?

Do you believe we could possibly have another ice age in the near future?

August 2020

It was mid August, but already fingers of autumn caressed the dewy grass with cool fingers.

The wind shifted, and came out of the north, and the bite of cold air stung my face and eyes. The glacier was only a few hundred miles away now. It was coming closer everyday, and every winter it grew larger. Like some prehistoric beast you could hear it grinding and growling its way south. That noise never stopped and it drove people to insanity. It swallowed all in its path. Most all of Canada was now under 2 miles of thick ice, everything ground to dust, unrecognizable.

The northern US was ready to receive the refugees of Canada, but no one had any idea how massive the exodus would be. Millions of people poured over the border, carrying along what they could of a life that no longer existed. There were tent cities set up as far away as Oklahoma, and still it was not enough, not nearly enough.

Those people the glacier chased out of their homes had about them a weariness of the soul, a haunting of the eyes that hung over them like a foul mimosa. For them, the glacier had finally won, had taken all they worked a lifetime for.

It all started small, like most things that have a monumental impact. With that very first tiny, beautiful, pristine snowflake, so many would have their fates sealed. That winter of 2011 was snowier than usual. It soon became “normal” to have snowfalls of 6 feet. Houses and businesses were alternately buried and then shoveled of snow. Roof after roof collapsed causing a great loss of life. No one was ready or could have imagined a winter like the winter of 2011.

As bad as that winter was, the following spring and summer were worse, because there was virtually no spring or summer. The cold and snow continued as people looked on in fear and amazement. It was then that the first homes were abandoned , it occupants too tired to continue clearing and digging out from the snow.

Villages and small cities became inaccessible because there was not enough money left to constantly remove snow from the roads. Only main highways linking large cities stayed open and those stayed that way only with much work and great expense.

People starved because there was simply no way to get out from under all the snow that fell and get to a place where food was available. If they were able to dig their way out of their homes, they then faced miles and miles of unplowed roads before they would get to a highway where the roads were still open. Even though food and supplies flowed in from the US, it all stood there, frozen in its place, going nowhere.

Entire families laid down together once last time, went to sleep and let the cold and ice claim them. In the spring, as the newly formed glacier plunged its slippery way across the land, those families became a part of the ice and cold. Became part of the glacier. It was not unusual at all to see dismembered body parts at the foot of the glacier….stained a ghastly blood rusty red!

Massive snowfall alternated with sub zero temperatures, producing perfect ice age conditions. Of course the ice age did not take everyone by surprise. As early as 1975 the US pentagon took a potential ice age very seriously. Even with the global warming bru-ha-ha reaching a fever pitch there were plenty of scientist who claimed we were due for an ice age. Add to that, with a strangely quiet sun, it all spelled out one horrifying conclusion….ICE AGE!

All these things do not really matter now, what matters is survival. It is almost pitiful how hard humans try to survive. Most would be better off just throwing in the towel and perishing, but that is not our instinct. And so Canada and the US began to look at balmy Mexico with its fertile farmlands as a way out. But first they would have to do something about the people who lived there, just as they did something about the Native Americans who had once lived in North America.

In the meantime, more and more power plants went down and the northern part of the country was plunged into darkness. Conditions became truly miserable for most people as the heating resources became impossible to deliver. People froze to death every night, even in the middle of summer they froze to death in their beds, frantically shivering to preserve their meager lives one minute, the next minute gone.

No one really knows how many died that first horrifying winter and summer of the ice age. After that, summer returned, cold with colder rain and sleet, but summer nevertheless, my garden somehow thrived and grew precious food for the family. However, we all cast a wary eye northward to the great hungering beast, posed on the ready, just waiting to get the chance to devour us. Growing larger with winter snows, retreating a bit with spring and summer, never knowing for sure what would happen next.

Often people would think back fondly and remember our days of global warming, and many would welcome it back. At least we had food to eat, and our lives unfolded in predictable ways.

In the end, man is arrogant to think that he, a little ant in the vast scheme of things, would have the ability to drastically change the weather for good or bad. Maybe one day we will have control of the weather, but it will never be complete, and it could very well cause more problems than solutions.

I guess we will have to rely on what our ancestors relied upon when it comes to the weather. There is a word for it….and that word is “prayer”.

This is one hub that slipped by me and personally I do not see any sign of a ice age coming! For we have had heat-waves and droughts all over the map! I do see signs of nature going nuts though! The poler caps are defiantly melting which may cause some serious flood issues one day. Great hub and I enjoyed some the comments made by dreamreachout. Farming tigers for food? Really? Now there is hub subject if there has EVERY been one!

      My Darling Edelweiss:

I need to leave town for a week or two. Where I am going there is no internet connection. Please keep the home fires burning for me and I'll speak with you upon my return. I will continue to pray for you and hope everything is well in your corner of the universe. Best wishes to you and yours, my love. - L.R.

      Hello Again Lone Ranger

Science tells us that we all have the same mitochrondial DNA which comes from our mothers, which means we all came from just one woman....why they think its a black woman, I am not sure.

Science is not always right, that is one thing I do know for sure. They are always coming up with something new that proves the old ideas were wrong.

Lone Ranger, you bring up an entire slew of good points.

Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such interesting and intelligent comments.

My darling edelweiss, I sincerely doubt we had a first "ice age", so you don't need to worry about the next one.

But, if things did get colder, it would just mean a longer hockey season and less soccer, which is a good thing. It is also known that cooler weather means less violent crime, so, this too, is a good thing. It also means more time to snuggle-up with a loved one, which is a very good thing. Unless I missed something, there are no downsides here. :0)

You did mention that DNA doesn't lie, but I would like to remind you, my love, that scientists are apt to distort the truth in favor of lies.

I know you are as right as rain, my dear, but some people you may get information from are not. I highly doubt, most esteemed one, that all DNA can be traced back to a black lady in Africa. I sincerely doubt Adam and Eve were black and I am most confident that Noah and his family were not of black ancestry.

This is not a racist diatribe - it's just that "Adam" in ancient Hebrew means red and Noah and his family were most likely the parents of the Arryan race. Noah's Ark rested on Mt. Ararat, which may be construed as being part of the Caucus Mountain Range from whence Caucasians sprung forth.

Perhaps it is more likely that DNA evidence can only be traced back to a black African lady, because so-called scientists haven't found any DNA evidence of an earlier date.

Another possibility is that these "scientists" fabricated their findings, which is commonplace, to bolster an existing bias or prejudice. So, in effect, they make the evidence fit some of their preconceived notions and dreams.

All these things aside, you are a gifted writer and you bring to the table many interesting ideas and thought provoking commentaries. I don't know how I survived all these years without you! Be that as it may, warm kudos and frisky kitten love to you and yours.

I read similar things on the internet and an American scientists says that the earth started to warm up in the 1800s, long before the automobiles and huge factories came into the scene. The current warming up is a premonition of the coming iceage. Wonder how South India will be during the coming iceage! It looks like manny, diego and sid is coming back home!

Some say the world will end in fire, but for destruction I say that Ice is great, and would suffice....

(I think that is how the Robert Frost poem Fire and Ice ends???)

Hey, they are farming tigers and eating them too!! How on earth can they digest when meat eating animals are known to content very high levels of amino acid!! Today, saving tigers is such a movement in India when only 1411 are left in the wild and the situation is so torrid only because of them!!

You remember me telling you earlier that America got to do something about China and thats earnestly required!! Its greater than American companies looking for cheap labour in China!!

As for my people, do you know that even now 50% of Indians following Hindu religion are vegetarians .. so they dislike hatred and crimes against animals!!

Unfortunately, I cant live without my share of lamb, chicken and eggs!!

I dont know how to rate up my score, maybe you know better!!

Yes, its seems we have created out own little chat room here, we should go and do the same at some of your hubs so that we can get them rated up again.

Yes, the Caucasion rule and have ruled the world since recorded history. However, we cannot overlook China, it was probably more advanced at one time ...over all other countires, but China always seems to collapse in on itself.

I worry a lot about China...I would not want them ruling the world. Anyone who hangs cats and dogs and strips the fur off before they are dead .....they are DIFFERENT than we are!

That's what I love about your people, they are so gentle and kind...especially to animals.

Hey you are right!! We are called caucasions because of the mountain ranges there!! There are four basic classification for human beings: negroid, caucasion, mongoloid and fourth one I forgot! These four classes are spread all across the globe today and remarkably its the caucasions who have ruled the world!! Europe is the homeland but that apart all other major places like America, Australia, India, Latin American continent, South Africa etc are dominated by the people with Caucasion lineage!!

Indeed, that we all are carrying the gene of one African women is an incredible data!!

Truly, the story of human beings is very fascinating as it comes forth and evolves before us!!

    • magnoliazz profile image

magnoliazz 8 years ago from Wisconsin

Yes, Dreamreachout, the story of human beings is very fascinating. If not for the ancient texts from India, we would have never known about Aryans and where they originated. You probably know more about this than I do, but the word caucasion comes from Caucus ...the Caucus mountain the Caspian I right?

Now with DNA, they found that every person alive today all came from one black woman, living in Africa! And...DNA does not lie.

By the time you get to your 5th cousin, everyone is realted to everyone else! I did not know I was related to my husband until the wedding day when my grandmother and his grandfather turned out to be first cousins! LOL..that was a shock!

Hey, you are yet to experience an ice age so you dont know!! During the last ice age there was large exodus everywhere .. My clan like 80% in India are supposed to have come to India during one such period from the Eastern Europe from somewhere around the Caspian sea!! Thats the history of Aryans in India who constitute the overwhelming part of the dominant population today!!

Lol .. Our air conditioners work well after all its the same around the world .. Samsung, L.G, Electrolux, Whirlpool, Carrier .. so you dont have to live in a river!! :)

I think I could take an ice age better than an Indian heat wave!

LOL...I would have to live in the river, I suppose you get used to it after a while, but I hate heat! And humid weather is nasty too, all that mold all over the place!
