Keep your orkut /google account safe: Some tips and precautions

Updated on May 19, 2010

Don't fall in the trap

Always remember unless you provide sufficient information no one can get into google account,it has too much strong protection.

I am writing this article because now a days many of my friends are suffered for just a click..

Now while floating around orkut I found some persons profile with many pornographic content and a link to visit. You surely consider that's a trap,But when you suddenly saw such a profile of your friend contain the same link, when you follow you are redirected to another orkut login page, this is the trap.. if you enter your id/pass in the field they will send you to a porn site but in the meantime they will store the password and will change your profile content so that the next victim is any other of your friends,

So what we need to remember...

  1. Whenever you logged into a google service ,suppose gmail, you are logged into google other services with that account (orkut, blogger). You never need to give user id password again while browsing in the same browser.
  2. When following links in orkut, there will a pop up telling you that you are leaving orkut. Do not enter your id/pass under any circumstances on those external pages.
  3. Don't use pass 123456... etc, surprising but this is the most common used password in web. Also don't use phone number,b'day as well.
  4. Don't check on remember me on a public computer.Always sign out before you exit.
  5. Don't use an outdated browser like IE6,use Firefox/chorme to have support of web forgery warning.
  6. Use a good antivirus with web support and update them regularly.
  7. Don't give sensitive personal data on ORKUT,FACEBOOK etc.

Here is an example of such fake page:

You may not have see the page because I have already reported to google about this forgery. They will show warning.

Besure to login using secure for securty certificate

Identification of secure page in firefox
Identification of secure page in firefox

I found a suspicious website what should I do??

If you found a suspicious you can report it to google to impose a warning on it.Just open firefox, open the url and click on  Help > Report Web Forgery , now add the details and submit. They will verify in person and will report as harmful site.

Report phishing site
Report phishing site

When I create profile on some site they are asking me to enter my gmail id/pass . What should Ido?

Yes there are many social networking site that offer such facility to find friend and send invitation (including hubpages too). But at the same time they said that they will not store the password and also you can skip the step too.

But a hacker can made a such site too.So only give id/pass to such site that is trusted. Also in recent time google launches Last account activity log and warning system. That means if your account accessed from outside your country they will show you a warning,If you receive such waring it's better to change the password.
