Learn French in New Caledonia

Updated on April 8, 2010

If you have given any thought to learning French, you have? Then I can highly recommend immersing yourself in a country where you have no choice but to learn and use French. So why not learn French in New Caledonia - it is a friendly pacific island, it has wonderful beaches and a wonderful French influence on their culture cuisine and of course language.

There is something to be said of being able to immerse yourself in a culture and put yourself in the situation of not having any choice but to learn the language so if you choose to learn french in New Caledonia then this is exactly what you will be doing. For nearly 10 months I was based in a French village near Lyon in France. It was part of my learning of the language to both formerly take lessons and to then go and find adventure in a nearby village, and put myself in the deep end a little. I had to converse with locals about ordering lunch off a menu, making small talk and meeting new friends in a cafe or a bar. All the while I was learning lots about genuine French culture, French cuisine, French people and then at the same time picking up local conversational French. My French progressed quickly and before long I wasn’t just able to greet my waiter with the bare pleasantries but also to talk with them about the wine list and ask for recommendations. It is the best of situations to be able to learn the language and then be forced to practise the language and then to put a cherry on top do it - all on a pacific island - Wow!

There are many options for learning French in New Caledonia, both live onsite and living onsite, pretty much anything you are looking for you will find. It is highly recommended and good to know that learning another language will increase your job prospects and intelligence. And of course the chance to learn with the locals on the beautiful pacific island of New Caledonia.

Thanks for your comment Lola, and point taken that the local French might not be the best standard. But I am sure the local Alliance Francaise will have a very good French Program

But new caledonia is so far and so expensive. Learning french in new caledonia is only meant for wealthy people.

Besides, french level in new caledonia is bad (i live there actually).

It's strange, but a lot of people cannot make a proper sentence, and sometimes i ask them to repeat the sentence, because it doesn't make sense. (i'm french).

I went to martinique, and i can tell you that people there speak a very proper french, even better than in France .

In a few years we're planning to move to the caribeans.
