Learn and Language While Translating the Internet

Updated on June 19, 2012

Luis von Ahn, the creator of the highly successful ReCAPTCHA, has a new company called Duolingo. Duolingo is a new type of language learning website that helps you learn or practice a language by reading, writing, speaking and listening to translations of websites. The languages offered currently are Spanish, German, French and English.

I've already written on a few websites that offer online courses to learn a language for free. But, this website is different from other language learning websites in how you learn and the lessons you receive.

The site gives you practice lessons which are phrases or sentences in your target language matched up to your skill level. If you're stuck and need some help you can get some hints by hovering over the words for possible translations.

You get instant feedback on your translation so you know what you did wrong. Users can also grade other's translations so the correct translations can rise to the top. Seeing other people's translations can also be helpful to see when a phrase can be translated in different ways.

Duolingo is a cool idea and working on real text instead of text from a textbook might be a benefit. It will be very useful for translating information on the web for all to see. It's also free, without ads and is now open to the public. So go try it and learn a new language today.
