Some Verbs and their Conjugations based on the 1st Group

There are two main types of verbs in the Russian language (along with some exceptions of course!). They are conveniently called the 1st group and the 2nd group and in each case they follow a clear and distinct pattern of naming when taken with the appropriate Pronoun (mentioned above). For the first group, the ending "ть" is removed in each case and depending on the pronoun a different ending is added.

Some examples of how this works are provided for each of the following verbs -

Читáть (To Read), Понимать (To Understand),Знáть (To Know), Рабóтать (To Work), Отдыхáть (To Rest), дéлать (To Make), игрáть (To Play)

Notice that in each case the following Replacement Rule applies based on the Pronoun:

  • Я - remove ть & put in ю (pronounced yuu)
  • Ты - remove ть & put in ешь (pronounced esh)
  • Он, Она & Оно are all the same - remove ть & put in ет (pronounced et)
  • Мы - remove ть & put in ем (pronounced em)
  • Вы - remove ть & put in ете (pronounced ete - remember, you need to say the "e" at the end also!)
  • Они - remove ть & put in ют (pronounced yut)

I'll get into the 2nd group later!
