Levitation Revealed: India Levitation Trick Used for Centuries

Updated on August 7, 2017

Yogi "Levitation"

Throughout history there have been many claims of levitation. This Levitation trick was used for centuries in India fooling thousands of intrigued followers. Levitation revealed Yogis use trickery and illusion to gain followers and money and have been doing so for centuries.

Levitation Trick Revealed

Yogis have fooled countless gullible people into believing they are levitating when in reality they are simply sitting on a carefully concealed stool. The stool trick has been used for at least two hundred years although probably much more, as it Has been documented in India as early as the 1800s.

Fake miracles are frequently performed by fraudulent yogis in India taking advantage of people's gullibility to gather fame and money.

"Holy Men" Stagecrafters

It is hard to believe these yogis have been using the trick for so long and still have success fooling people. I guess in a place where yogis are respected and stories of levitation are widely regarded as true it comes as no surprise.

What about real levitation though? Just because there are people faking it doesn't mean nobody has done it for real. Throughout history there have been many accounts of levitation and even some in the modern era that have been documented by photograph and even video.

Real Levitation

There is a strong history of levitation around the world especially in Asia. In Hinduism, it is said that the ability to levitate comes naturally along the path of the Siddha guru. Apparently Sadhu gurus have a history of paranormal levitation, and some instances have been documented since the early 1900s.

Reports of Levitation

There have been many reported claims of levitation and since the invention of the camera there have been a few famous instances documented. It seems however that whether or not the subject is actually levitating can become a subject of debate.

Yogi Pullavar

In 1936, an Indian man named Subbayah Pullavar reportedly levitated for 4 minutes in front of a large crowd and was photographed for the Illustrated London News. According to the report, the Yogi concealed himself inside a tent assembled by his assistants and when they removed it, he appeared in the air levitating. Suspending himself in the air, the Yogi appeared in a trance and was lightly resting his hand on a cloth covered stick that went to the ground. According to observers, the Yogi did not use the stick for support but as a point of reference. He was examined for props, strings, or any form of support that could possibly be concealed but none was found. However, when it was time for him to come down, he did not do so without being concealed again by his tent, which he emerged from on the ground still in deep trance.

Sai Baba

Sai Baba of Shirdi was an Indian guru who lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He allegedly performed many miracles including levitation, mind reading and many other supernatural acts gaining a strong following. Today, many Hindu devotees consider Sai Baba to be an incarnation of Lord Krishna. In the 20th century, Sai Baba's followers grew and his teaching developed into a movement - the Shirdi Sai Baba movement.

Yogic Flying

In Transcendental Meditation (TM), a phenomenon called Yogic Flying is said to be possible by projecting specific thought from transcendental state of consciousness achieved through meditation. Every year TM practitioners engage in various "Yogic Flying Contests" to exhibit the three stages of Yogic Flying: hopping, floating, and flying. However, to date no one has achieved the two latter stages and contestants in the competition only hop. Read more about Yogic Flying here.

Jetsun Milarepa

Jetsun Milarepa was a famous Tibetan yogi and poet who lived from 1052 to 1135 BC. He was apparently able to levitate and perform many other supernatural abilities. Whether or not these allegations are factual may never be concluded.

Other People Who Were Claimed to be Able to Levitate

African Shamans

This video is much more convincing than the stool sitting yogi levitators. If this man is not levitating, the props are concealed well.

Believe it or not...

Tip: Use Photoshop

Very nice hub. Although levitation has been used for trickery, there are well documented acts of levitation out in the open. I just finished a hub about ancient levitation secrets and quantum levitation showing proof that it can be done. Check it out when you get the time and tell me what you think.

Nice information shared here! These cons fool a lot of innocent people every day and create a bad name for holy saints like Sai Baba.
