Life 101 - Having a Double Life

Updated on June 19, 2013

The other "I"

If I say that I'm having a 'double life' on HubPages, would you believe it?

Reasons? Due to the option of having a multiple account, a writer can assume a pseudonym or alias (aka or also known as) that will not affect his or her true self.

Broad definition of the term will lead us to a more serious scenario as in having a split personality, doppelganger, being an impersonator or an avatar.

Avatar as a movie showed us that we can assume another personality once we are in an unconscious state.

Going back to Cicero's day in Rome during the 1st century, he considered it as his second self, as his most trusted friend. As if, you're talking to yourself and you answer back, too.

An alter ego is the second self which is distinct from the original or normal personality. In 19th century, the term used is dissociative identity disorder. To separate it, Anton Mesmer, a noted physician, used hypnosis during the late 17th century. That's why there is a term called mesmerized in order to describe a hysterical person that is reduced to calmness due to the intervention of hypnotism. Doubters had it concluded that it is better to address him as Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), the Viennese physician who left the word “mesmerism” to posterity.

Actors and actresses are having double lives due to their assumption of roles of real or make-believe persons in movies or silver screen.

Superheroes use alter egos in order to blend with ordinary people. And their villains, too!

Even singers or stage performers use alter egos to make them more popular.

Perhaps, the most noted exploration of the inner self is in Robert Louis Stevenson's thriller, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The doctor's other self is Edward Hyde, who is a psychopath or the evil one.

As modern world continue to prosper, many cases of that "Jekyll and Hyde" characters are in the news as those unassuming, kind characters can commit crimes of unimaginable degree.

Ordinary People having Double Lives

In the morning her name is Jane Doe, but during the night she is now Kim, or Patricia, or even Corazon.

The lives being assumed of many prostitutes are true accounts of double lives.

If you frequent clubs or pub houses or bars at night, you will meet Alicia, or even Whitney having a chit-chat with you, pursuing you to order bulk of drinks as they sip their ladies' drink.

Or perhaps when the night lures a customer to a more intimate and indecent proposal in exchange of illicit sex plus the payment of agreed transaction.

Story # 1 - Seafarers' Escapade

When I was just a struggling cook trainee at the seaman's center of my maritime school, I didn't know that two of our senior trainees were having night jobs as male club strip dancers.

When they told me about their escapades as we boarded or first vessels overseas, the money they earned were sent to their needy families.

I know its wrong to allow them to sneak out from the seaman's enter at night. The captain never found out.

And when I met one of them, just recently, now as a ship's officer, he told me to never spill out his secrets to his wife. He'll be the one to tell her later.

I advised him to bare his secrets but to no avail. He's still contemplating to do it.

Story #2 - College Dilemma

A Summa Cum Laude graduate has a dark past. She admitted to her friends who also went with the all-women college in our city what she was doing for the past years.

Imagine her as a talented escort girl of a local congressman or a kept woman of that legislator at night and an active college student during school days.

Her friends allowed her to do her double-life-activities as she needed the money in order to support her ailing mother and younger siblings.

The mother superior didn't know that act of her admirable student as she brought honors to the university but the night guard and her classmates at the school dormitory just kept their mouths shut out of pity for her fate.

Story # 3 - The Altar Boy

A former altar boy who became my production manager on the radio did have a double life.

His wife and children didn't knew what she did during his struggling years as a substance addict, while moonlighting as a disc jockey at the local disco joint in the city.

When he lured me to try his illegal act, I resisted. I warned him that I'll report him to the police.

He laughed out loud and bragged that he's the son of the local chief of police.

Now, when I met him again, he praised me for my decision to evade illegal drugs. He complained that he is now suffering with hypertension and other diseases related to his womanising and substance-abuse days.

To think, he used to be a volunteer narcotics agent where he can easily access those illegal substance from the vault of the agency.

Many of us are doing such act of a double-lifer individual in order to make things end meet.

The usual bottomline or reason for having such scheme is due to one's status in the society.

Typical stories of doing double-life-acts are similar to what I narrated above, although in different settings, of poverty, location and circumstances.

The real-to-reel situations are often mixed up in order to cope up with the changing of times, as the need to survive is as steep as the slippery edges of snow-laden Mount Everest or the suffocating depths of Marianas Trench.

These are some of true accounts of ordinary people. What more at the affluent sector where many things happen, where having a double life is just an ordinary act in order to escape the real, cruel world.

To be a Spy: Double Life in a Mission

When I was shooting a photograph infront of a commercial store in Texas, while transitting as a seafarer, a child reported me to guard of the establishment.

I was warned by the elderly Filipina American that since the 9/11 incident, Americans are now wary of the visitors coming from countries with terroristic activities, such as Philippines (during those times).

In Rumania, they also prohibited taking or posing for a photograph infront of a commercial establishment for fear of being used for such act.

In return, some Filipinos are also suspicious with foreigners who are posing as tourists. Conspiracy theories are circling from the grapevine having such ideas that some missionaries are also being used as spies of their own countries.

The more concrete evidence about this notion is the existence of spies.

Yes, movies depict famous spies, like James Bond of the British empire, that can also be true in real life. We can enjoy the actions of the latest instalment on Jason Bourne's narratives as a fictional American spy.

During our stint in Ukraine way back 2002, I met a remarkable elderly woman at the seaman's library at Ilyichevski, the port where our container ship used to discharge its cargo.

She introduced herself as Madam Valentina. I don't know if it's her real name.

But when I frequented the library during my spare time, she confessed that she was a former KGB agent, a woman spy trained back in Siberia during the Cold War between the US and USSR.

She knows several languages, her intonations vary as she delivers it fluently.

I was in awe with the lady, but she said that it's not her happiest days in her life. She assumed several personalities as she served the Russian government.

Still, nowadays, the remnants of that period are still apparent.

Spying is in subtle manner these days, as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg admits that he is ahead of the CIA or the Pentagon as his site can easily track down users and know their identities in just a snap of a finger.

There's a danger to be involved in social media.

That risk also involves having false identities or fake user names as many assume "double-life" status.

What the Bible say about having a Double Life

To a man's perspective, Jesus may assumed as an ordinary man but as the Son of God, He didn't allow us to have a double life.

Jesus said:

Matthew 7:15 " Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 "You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 "Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 "Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

True. Many public servants inevitably fit in to such description as they pose as honest and caring but in private, they are cuddling the elements of the underworld (vices as in drugs and illegal activities).

Conniving with the devil as crime escalate in many cities or even countries show the abomination of a desolate society.

Many bad elements are not afraid of the authorities because they can easily bribe the high-ranked personnel in exchange of their continuous operation.

1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

The lure of material things, especially money, often lead to disobedience as one can commit sins by using it in wrongful ways.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

Apostle Paul teaches us on how to live as true Christians and evade from acting a double life.

Setting our minds above, not on things on Earth is a way to start such goal.

Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. 8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

@MsDora: In this world we live in, most of us are doing it although some used it with dark motives.

Yes, there are many true stories revealing double life accounts. I personally dealt with it and learned a thing or two on how to cope up with shady people as my former job of being a reporter demanded it.

Thank you for always dropping by. I need it. :)

If you mean main characters in comics, movies and music, I just shared some of it here.

To some extent, many of us are forced to lead double lives--that is, we assume different personalities for different roles so we can "look" and "act" the part -- no harm intended. It's quite another thing when we have ulterior motives. Quite a lot of scenarios in your article. Thanks for the references.
