How materials and aids help in teaching?

Updated on July 22, 2017

Teaching in the classroom can be made interesting and interactive by using materials and aids. Using materials and aids involves the students in the process of learning and helps them to understand a concept easily.

Visually seeing and listening to the new concepts being taught in the classroom helps students to understand and remember what they have learned.

Flash Cards

Flash cards are very easy to make. Cut out colorful pictures from magazines, brochures, leaflets, tourist pamphlets, etc. Stick the pictures onto a card. Cover them with plastic sheets to protect them and for long term use.

Keep the flashcards organized according to the category. For example food, clothes, places, buildings, etc. Flash cards are very easy to make and are inexpensive.

Flash cards are visual aids that are very useful to teach and will also help the students remember what is being taught.

Realia is the concept of bringing real objects to class whenever appropriate. With Realia, students can learn by, seeing and touching objects. Realia helps students to retain what they have learned in the classroom.

Various sized objects can be brought to class to teach sizes and shapes. Feely bags can be made by filling the bag with different shaped objects. Each student can get a chance to feel and guess the shape.

Pictures and photographs can be shown to teach about places. Herbs, spices, tea leaves can be brought to class for lessons on plants. Students can be encouraged to bring in pets for show and tell provided they are safe.

Overhead Projectors

Overhead Projector is a tool that can be used in many ways to teach. You can project pictures about what you teach, show movies about the subject that you are teaching or project information that you have written on a transparency and use it to teach.

Exercises can also be written on the transparencies and projected. The whole class can take part in doing the exercises. They can be projected onto a relatively big sized screen or you can use the white wall.

Overhead Projectors can also be used to project PowerPoint presentations on a big screen for the entire class to view.

Tapes and CD’s

Tapes and CD’s can be used to teach correct pronunciations, listen to passages and then answer “Yes/No” or “True/False questions.

Conversation classes can be taught very easily by playing a CD or a tape in that language. This is very useful for teaching new languages.

Charts can be made on the current topic being taught and put up on the walls of the classroom as a constant reminder of what has been taught.

PowerPoint Presentations

PowerPoint presentations help a great deal in the process of teaching. PowerPoint presentations can be made fun and interesting. You can prepare the presentations well in advance and be ready to teach in class.

When students visually see what they have to learn in an interesting format on the presentation they will be able to understand it better and remember what they have learned. PowerPoint presentations can be made interesting by including text art, audio and video elements.

PowerPoint presentation is a great tool that a teacher can use to make lessons more fun, interactive and easy to understand. Another advantage is that you can prepare well in advance and this saves time.

Teaching is all about creativity, constant invention of new methods and ways to teach effectively with the help of materials and aids.

You have an interesting hub. I have used all of materials and teaching aids you mention in this excellent hub. Without cutting or piercing my finger I bent a paper clip in class to illustrate the action of bending and the making of a hook.
