Measuring Radiation Nuclear Fallout RADS with Geiger Counters

Updated on June 12, 2014

Issues of Radiation Toxicity Levels

Everyone must be very concerned about radiation poisoning and a need to understand the measurement of radioactivity in the atmosphere. What does this mean for those in the proximity of the meltdown and the release of radiation steam?

Let us learn together and know how to respond during times of emergencies. We will all be watching the news and trying to make sense of this natural disaster. Here are a few videos that introduce us to this topic of nuclear fallout and radiation poisoning and toxicity.

A number of articles are available on my community website, as well. In the coming weeks, I shall be doing a few radio shows on this topic.

Target Lawsuit Settled | If you think the problems of hazardous waste live only in cities and countries far away from where you live, you may be wrong. Industry and corporations take shortcuts to save money, but in the end have to pay.

  • is a website with news of safety, health and corporate conduct

Target Corp. will pay $22.5 million to settle a lawsuit by state and local authorities in California that accused the retail chain of illegally disposing hazardous wastes to save money.

  • “California law requires companies to properly store, handle, and dispose of hazardous wastes and materials to avoid harm to people and the environment,” Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley said in a news release. “Target routinely ignored those laws to cut costs and gain competitive advantages.”

  • The lawsuit filed in Alameda County in 2009 alleged that Target crushed batteries, telephones and computers in trash compactors to avoid costly hazardous waste disposal fees at landfills. Target also was accused of illegally dumping pesticides, paints, aerosols, batteries and “other flammable, toxic and corrosive wastes.”

Migration of people in Japan | As people move out of Tokyo due to fear of radiation effects the population decreases. The total population in the metropolitan area decreased by about 4,000 in the two months. In Tokyo alone, the population dropped by about 6,400.

Tokyo Becomes Toxic Waste Repository | Now that radioactive waste materials from the Fukushima nuclear reactor and tsunami will be deposited, cemented, and buried in Tokyo the dangers of transporting hazardous waste and safely maintaining these landfills cause concern. It is quite amazing that certain articles disappear from site.

  • The Environment Ministry decided Sept. 25 to allow ash with radiation levels of more than 100,000 becquerels per kilogram to be buried if steps to prevent leaks of radioactive substances

Illegal Dumping Called "Midnight Dumping" On The Increase

No matter where you live this type of activity may be occurring and even on the rise as legal landfills become full. People and industry dispose of waste in unauthorized areas. It is an environmental crime. Depending on the circumstances, charges can range from misdemeanor to felony and the fines can be quite heavy.

Trends show illegal dumping is rising in North Carolina. Rising disposal costs and an increase in building are contributing factors. Illegal dumps are not just ugly, they also impact human health, damage the environment and can discourage economic development.

Book Review

We can read the forecast of those who placed their lives on the line to cool the March 11, 2011 Japan nuclear meltdown. In this story from Japan's worst nuclear radiation accident at a uranium reprocessing facility in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo, on 30 September 1999 we read in detail a man's demise. Ouchi, whose chromosomes were destroyed by a blast of neutron rays while working in unsafe conditions in a uranium processing facility records his last 83 days in gruesome detail.

What Lessons Can We Learn?

The direct cause of the accident was cited as the depositing of a uranyl nitrate solution--containing about 16.6 kg of uranium, which exceeded the critical mass--into a precipitation tank. Three workers were exposed to extreme doses of radiation.

Looking Good One Day He Was The Walking Dead

Hiroshi Ouchi, one of these workers, was transferred to the University of Tokyo Hospital Emergency Room, three days after the accident. Dr. Maekawa and his staff initially thought that Ouchi looked relatively well for a person exposed to such radiation levels. He could talk, and only his right hand was a little swollen with redness. However, his condition gradually weakened as the radioactivity broke down the chromosomes in his cells.

Prolonging The Life May Prolong The Pain

The doctors were at a loss as to what to do. There were very few precedents and proven medical treatments for the victims of radiation poisoning. Less than 20 nuclear accidents had occurred in the world to that point, and most of those happened 30 years ago. This book documents the following 83 days of treatment until his passing, with detailed descriptions and explanations of the radiation poisoning.

  • The Effects of Radiation Sickness: vomiting, hair loss, skin hemorrhages, bleeding, loss of white blood cells, pain, delirium and often death.

Radioactive Rain Fallout

Radioactive Fallout in Toronto Canada

You may learn more about what's happening in your local from people who do solo testing.Radioactivity in rain 20 000cpm / sq. meter Toronto Canada!

You see here part 3 of a series of films demonstrating the measurements of the radioactivity falling on the north of GTA (Greater Toronto Area), Canada. This one from August 14th 2011 at 17h55.
Approx. 1 square meter of smooth surface wiped (glass, solar panels). Measured with a Eberline HP-260 Pancake Probe and with a Eberline E-140 counter.

The results measured 20 000 cpm per square meter of wipe. He began measurements on March 14, 2011 and the results keep rising. Previous record was 10 000cpm (counts per minute).

He keeps panel clean, I imagine as a control. He says the dirtier panels appear to collect higher levels of radioactivity. The panels were not radioactive before it rained. The decay rate is typically 33min - 45 minutes. This matches Radon decay daughter products being selectively washed out of the atmosphere, (hence the variable decay rate.)

We do not have precise information as to the origin of the radioactive material, whether it comes from rain clouds that contain particles from Fukushima. Another possibility of fallout from the NWO spiking the clouds with radioactive isotopes for weather modification.

These numbers do not bode well for citizens of Toronto and possible radioactive effects. The levels are increasing. In the beginning the levels were roughly doubling every 2 weeks. Since the start of the summer the levels stabilized to 3500-5000 cpm per sq. meter every time it rained. He reports that the decay rate is short and the geiger counter does not detect the high levels after a day or two since the initial rain meters. Poor weather deposits the highest levels of radiation.

  • Radon is a heavy gas that is 8 times as heavy as air, so it hugs the ground, approx. 100 meters or less is where it tends to collect. So if this is ground Radon why does the levels increase if it rains all day?

The author of this video questions the origin of this radioactivity, whether from natural radon in the atmosphere, cloud seeding or the jet stream winds from Japan. Could it be Radon coming from the tailings from the Uranium mines and washing out by the rain?

We will continue to watch the story in Japan live

Serious Damage from Radiation

This video explains that radiation exposure can come from a number of sources. However, full exposure for a short length of time is enough to cause serious health effects.

  • Damage to single organ
  • Lesions
  • Small bowel injuries
  • Pneumonia
  • Under active thyroid
  • Foster injury
  • Mental retardation
  • Cancer

Learning About Gamma Radiation

An old film during the era of nuclear concern

I love these old films. Do you remember having 'atomic bomb' drills in school? The sirens would blow and we would all drop down and huddle under our desks in the classroom, as if that would do any good. We were shown photos and films of the H-bomb flash, the searing winds, and the windows blasting out. Do you think getting under the desk would be any protection?

Planning Our Future. It was the time of bomb shelters and storing food for a potential world confrontation. Some how we got past the cold war and built nuclear power plants, thinking that man could actually contain such powerful and dangerous energy. With a demand for energy to fuel our increasing need for electricity to light up our technological gadgets, appliances, homes and cities, we thought these power plants would solve our problems. Long term effects of radioactive waste, intelligent foresight into the deterioration of old power plants, and potential terrorist threats or the demolition due to natural disasters was not part of the game plan.

Terms For Measuring Radiation. When scientists measure radiation, they use different terms depending on whether they are discussing radiation coming from a radioactive source, the radiation dose absorbed by a person, or the risk that a person will suffer health effects (biological risk) from exposure to radiation.

System Internationale (SI) | A uniform system of weights and measures that evolved from the metric system used around the world. Different units of measure are used depending on what aspect of radiation is being measured. For example, the amount of radiation being given off, or emitted, by a radioactive material is measured using the conventional unit curie (Ci), named for the famed scientist Marie Curie, or the SI unit becquerel (Bq). The radiation dose absorbed by a person (that is, the amount of energy deposited in human tissue by radiation) is measured using the conventional unit rad or the SI unit gray (Gy). The biological risk of exposure to radiation is measured using the conventional unit rem or the SI unit sievert (Sv).

It takes 100 RADS to equal 1 Sievert

Measuring The Rate and the Docimeter

Measuring Radiation

Check out this government webpage

We will be hearing the term RAD which means the Radiation Absorbed Dosage. This term has been replaced with the SI Gy, which is equal to 100 RAD. A person exposed to radiation, which can be absorbed into the skin, through the mucus membranes, inhaling into the lungs, etc will be accumulated in the tissues and cells. Radiation has a half-life, which means it will last a very long time in the body.

The type of radiation determines how serious the risk to human life and health. Actually, the risk to all life on earth. Ionizing radiation of alpha and beta particles, gamma rays and x-rays are measured in the Q factor as it is absorbed into the body's cells.

To get a better idea of how much radiation you receive from each exposure a comparison of incidents will help. We will be hearing the term "sievert" shown as Sv or mSv

REPEAT | It Takes 100 RADS To Equal 1 SIEVERT [Sv or mSv]

Exposure to cosmic rays during a roundtrip airplane flight from New York to Los Angeles 3 mrem 0.03 mSv

One dental x-ray 4?15 mrem 0.04?0.15 mSv

One chest x-ray 10 mrem 0.1 mSv

One mammogram 70 mrem 0.7 mSv

One year of exposure to natural radiation (from soil, cosmic rays, etc.) 300 mrem 3 mSv

Acute Radiation Syndrome ARS or Radiation Sickness

There is no "safe" level of radiation exposure. Any level can cause mutations and cancer. A CT scan (8 mSv acute dose) is said to increase your cancer risk by 0.15% - but it does not cause any direct symptoms of radiation sickness, it's only so-called "stochastic" damage.

Many survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs in the 1940s and many of the firefighters who first responded after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant accident in 1986 became ill with ARS.

When radiation exposure of gamma rays for a short length of time, enough to be absorbed into the cells, there may be immediate radiation sickness and long term chronic damage to health. The radiation goes through the skin and will burn. Total body exposure or enough localized exposure will cause ARS. Radiation sickness starts from 200 mSv as an ACUTE dose.

Immediate Symptoms of Acute Radiation Syndrome:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • Skin burns with swelling, itching and redness like sunburn

These symptoms may subside, but will return again with additional symptoms that may last from a few hours up to several months:

  • loss of appetite
  • fatigue
  • fever
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • seizures
  • coma
  • burns on the skin

Depending upon the amount of exposure, the person will either die from the above symptoms, loss of immune system or through cancer of blood cells and bone marrow with chronic infections and internal bleeding.

The disease may linger for weeks to a couple of years.

Seek medical care immediately.

Dear Glenn - I would like to thank you for lovely FAN Comments. I'm very glad you have been checking PRE and POST Fukushima. We need more data collected to see the actual effects for ourselves, to measure them, and not simply be told or accept as fact what certain authorities with their own agenda might say.

Why do humans do such horrendous and harmful things to the planet and to each other? I don't think I can answer this question.

You will find an abundance of information about a variety of topics on HWC. I want to have the expert Phillip Hoekstra back on the Health Inn Show to interview him once again. He is an expert on thermascan and radiation. If you search his name on HWC you will find the first interview.

Hi Debby - I bought my Geiger Counter long before the catastrophe with Fukushima. The 5 RAD readings were already here in New York before that. So far I have not detected an increase since then, but I am very concerned about it drifting around the entire planet. Nothing we can do about that.

I think the one thing that makes humans different from other animals is that we are the only ones who do things that eventually make our planet uninhabitable.

Dear Glenn - Wow! I'm glad you got a geiger counter and can monitor your region. I wonder also whether the readings are lingering from the 1950's testing. Something tells me the new wave of radiation from Fukushima and other nuclear power plant leaks and emissions have contributed to your readings. Keep us informed. Fukushima is a nightmare and a world disaster. The story continues.... Blessings

I didn't know about Target doing the illegal dumping of radioactive material. But I did know about other companies doing this, and it's really a shame. It's good that you wrote about this. People need to know and understand it.

You said in this hub that you wonder how many people will go out and get a Geiger counter. I actually bought one several years ago. Similar to the one in the part 1 video. He indicates that it reads 1 to 5 RADs from background radiation. I have noticed that mine reads roughly 5 RADs all the time. I had always wondered if that was left over radiation from the nuclear testing that was done in the 50s drifting across the United States to the East Coast.

Hello Shea. I'm really sorry to burst anyone's bubble. I also feel the world can be quite frightening knowing the powerful corporate monopolies in bed with governments can mandate such measures. Hello Kristin ~ I'm so happy to hear this hub stimulated some introspection upon the subject of our planet. The truth of the matter lies in an invisible sphere of influence, our thoughts, intentions and then into our actions. I simply can't understand the morals of major corporate leadership when they endanger the people and the planet. Of course, there are no easy answers, but who gives them advice?

The radiation from Fukushima can be detected in Eastern USA and all around the globe and will have visible effects in the coming decades. Blessings, Debby
