Online Education Bachelor Degrees for Single Dads

Updated on January 27, 2010

As a single dad, my dad went back to school to get his bachelor degree in civil engineering.  He went to a local community college on nights and weekends.  I can remember going to his physics class a couple of Saturdays because he didn’t want to leave his twelve year old son home alone.  Man, were those classes boring to a twelve year old!

When my dad went back to school he had to physically go the campus to take his classes.  Nowadays, a single dad doesn’t even have to leave the house to get his online bachelors degree.

As more and more online universities gain accreditation and expand their degree selection, more people have chosen to get their bachelor degree online.  As a single dad, you may want to get an online degree to get a promotion in your current job, to get a new job, or to just learn more about what you want t o do.  Getting your online degree will definitely open new doors; oftentimes, to a better job with a better salary allowing you to spend more time with your children and to better provide for them as well.

Even if you really want to get an online education there may be some things holding you back.  Things like finding the time to do an online bachelor degree, being able to afford an online bachelor degree, or being accepted into an online university.  If any of these things are bothering you consider this:

Online degree programs are extremely flexible.  Most course work can be done on your own time over the internet.  So long as you complete assignments on time it doesn’t matter if you work on them at 3 in the afternoon or 3 in the morning.  If you have your kids on an alternating schedule you have the luxury of doing the assignments on days that you don’t have the kids.  Even if you are a full-time dad, isn’t it worth it to stay up an extra hour or two and get your work done for you and your family’s future?  Remember: it will happen if you make it happen.

Online education bachelor degrees are actually pretty affordable.  Most programs are cheaper than a typical liberal arts college because they focus on the degree program.  If you’re lucky enough to have tuition assistance at work this can be a great way to cut down on the cost of an online degree.  There are also numerous scholarships available, some specifically for single parents that want to go back to school.  Worst case scenario is that you get a student loan that you pay back over several years.  It’s really not that bad.

Getting into an online degree program is a fairly easy process.  The first step is to find an online degree program that you like.  Many online universities have specialized degrees that can focus on sub topics within a degree.  If you need help picking an online education bachelor degree program you can check out the following article:

How to evaluate online education bachelor degrees

Once you have a degree program in mind, complete the online application.  If you need help with the essay portion there are numerous resources available online.  With a little hard work and a bit of persistence if necessary you’ll be accepted into an online bachelor degree program.

Remember starting an online bachelor degree program is only the beginning.  Fortunately, most online degree programs are concentrated and can be completed in about 2 years.  While it seems like a lot of sacrifice (because it is) you’ll be amazed at how quickly the time will fly by.  Just remember to keep a balance between school and your time with your kids and you’ll be successful and proud.
