Top 10 American Online Colleges and Unversities
Reportedly, the correspondence school movement of distance education began as early as 1728. At that time, the Boston Gazette printed ad advert stating: Caleb Phillips, teacher of the New Method of Short Hand seeks students for lessons to be sent weekly.
About a hundred years later, distance education was developed in London, UK. From there it began to emerge in other locales. However, until the age of the Internet, it was all done by post.
Hundreds of online educational programs have emerged since the Internet became popular in the 1990s under the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Administration of the US. Not all of these distance learning programs have endured, but many of them have developed into reputable educational options with dozens of useful degree programs available.
In the 21st century, students may actually complete grades 1-12 and post-secondary education through the PhD degree online through fully accredited programs. Some of the college level require some time on the actual physical campus of the institution, but many do not. For advanced degrees above the bachelors, some subjects require actual internships and other educational experiences not available online. All of this creates literally 1000s of options to the student.
Working adults were the first individals to take advantage of correspondence courses offered before the Internet was invented. These were all handled through the mail (snail mail), with some programs requiring additional time in the classroom or an advisors office quarterly. Some people were able to complete high school in this way, while working to support their parents and siblings or their own spouses and children.
After the advent of the Internet, many schools developed online classes, followed by accredited degree programs.
The following list of online programs consistently appear in rankings of top colleges/universities and distance education opportunities of several dozen entities that examine the results produced by these educational institutions.
Overall, there are at least 100 schools offering accredited online degree programs that are reputable and which provide education that leads to a real job and career. The following Universities are the 10 that stand out most consistently among all the lists.
Six Myths About Online Education Debunked
- Online schools are inferior to classroom based schools and are offered only by cyber-schools that you cannot locate physically. – This is false, because via the Internet, follow-up is even more regular between teacher and student and these schools list their p[physical addresses. If you cannot find one, don’t use that school. Check addresses with a Google search, making sure that they are not simply a box at a UPS store.
- Online faculty are underqualified. - I found this was true on a few occasions before 2005-2006. This is no longer true as schools have tightened up their teaching requirements. Community business professionals really have to have the correct skills when they teach classes or seminars as well.
- Online students suffer consequences of classroom activity. - Not with live conferencing, discussions rooms, e-mail, pod-casts, videos, and more. Sometimes, it’s more organized to be online than in a classroom.
- Online degrees is just computer based lessons that you download. - Incorrect. Students can download assignments and lecture notes, but also watch streaming video lectures, hear pod-casts, chat in discussion rooms, and use live-conference features.
- Online degrees are not accredited and therefore, not accepted by employers. -This was once true for some of these degrees, because not all online schools were accredited, but those have largely been closed down or upgraded to accredited in the last several years have been researching them. After 2005, this is just no longer much of a concern.
- Online students need to be highly tech-savvy. - Wrong! You need to know how to navigate E-mail, pod-casts, and other user-friendly aspects. Directions are clear and easy to follow and a Help Desk feature is provided.
