Flying gear

THERE ARE A FEW ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT EVERY PILOT NEEDS, AND OTHERS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL TO PARTICULAR FLYING TASKS DEPENDING ON HOW YOU PLAN TO USE YOUR LICENCE. HERE'S AN INTRODUCTION TO SOME OF THE PERSONAL EQUIPMENT YOU MIGHT NEED DURING YOUR TRAINING AND LATER IN YOUR PURSUIT OF FLYING FOR PLEASURE OR AS A CAREER.

UNLESS you're a rich and compulsive spender, you should resist the temptation to start collecting accoutrements you may never need. In most cases the items we list are, or eventually will be, in your must-have department.

CALCULATOR

Hand-held calculators, especially those capable of metric conversions and even flight planning calculations, are often useful for tasks associated with flight.

CHAMOIS OR CLEANING RAG

Let's not start by spoiling a nice flying day because your windscreen's smeared with mist, dust, or squished bugs. Good outward visibility, especially in VFR, is a safety issue so you'll always need an easy to carry a conveniently stored chamois or a clean piece of cloth as visibility is important to accurate visual flying.

CHARTS

Without maps and charts, how would you navigate from point A to point B? Maps are updated regularly and the best way to purchase them is through subscription to Airservices Australia. That way, you won't miss an update. Alternatively, all pilot shops stock a healthy variety of maps and charts essential to all aviators.

CLIPBOARD OR KNEE PAD

For the flight plan, charts to be used en route, and any other essential documentation for a particular flight.

ELT

Emergency Locator Transmitters have saved tha lives of a lot of boaties, hikers and pilots. Pilot caution determines that one should always expect the unexpected and if "it" ever happened to you, then you'd certainly want a means to be located and rescued. An ELT shouldn't be regarded as nuisance value. One day it could be a life saver.

FLIGHT BAG

Pilots have plenty to carry and a flight bag is the best way to lug about things such as maps, charts, documents, paper, headsets, pens, pencils and rulers; and of course your licence, which is mandatory. But you should carefully evaluate what sized bag makes sense, especially if you're going to be flying a small aeroplane. And remember, it has to be stowed somewhere you can reach its contents while you're also flying the aircraft.

NAV COMPUTER ("WHIZZ WHEEL")

The whizz wheel is a circular slide rule that looks complex and to some it is. But once you grasp the idea of how to utilise this handy little device, routine calculations become simple. It allows you to convert pounds to kilograms, metres to nautical miles, to calculate groundspeed and true airspeed, flight time, fuel burn, crosswind component, and so much more.

FLIGHT PLANNING AND LOG BOOK SOFTWARE

Several flight planning programs are available, which take a lot of the grief out of planning a flight in terms of navigation and fuel requirements. Once you've entered (correct) aircraft data in your system, you only need to enter the winds, weights and aircraft callsign, and your program will recall entered data, calculate correct headings, ground speeds, fuel burn and all the necessary details, and prepare your flight plan in seconds, some even producing a printable route map, and you can lodge your flight plan over the Internet

FUEL DRAINER

The careless pilot is the one who doesn't take the time to check the fuel tanks -properly. Fuel management is an important part of flying training and that fact will be reinforced by you instructor time after time. Yet despite that so many get it wrong. Use your humble fuel drain to check for water or dirt or any other nasties that shouldn't be sitting in your aeroplane's fuel tank. It could save you in the long run.

HEADSET

Needed for communication between pilots and in some cases, passengers. Most flying schools provide headsets but they are not always available and there may be health issues, so it's advisable for you to own your personal set if you intend to fly regularly. In-flight communication is vital to pilots, and it's always best to use your own equipment.

What's inside a flight bag

LOGBOOK

Every pilot needs a logbook As a student pilot you'll derive great satisfaction from entering your hours after each flight and when you go solo, it's such a milestone in your fledgling career that you'd be forgiven for highlighting the moment in red. As the hours accumulate, your logbook will probably be resplendent with more ratings and endorsements than you ever believed possible. Your logbook is a valued record of your flying career Look after it accordingly.

OFFICIAL PUBLICATIONS

The VFG, designed as a "cockpit companion" to the ERSA which may not fit in all cockpits, is a comprehensive pocket-book that contains the information you need to plan and conduct a safe VFR flight. It's tabbed for ease of use and provides a step by step process to provide as much information at your fingertips as possible. It's also designed to be attached to your clipboard or knee-pad.

PERSONAL GPS

Many pilots believe that when all else fails and darkness is approaching, a standby GPS that fits in your flight bag may be a life-saver.

STUDY GUIDES

There's a wealth of study guide material, but consult your flight or ground instructor about what's most suitable because much of the material covers the same ground. Diverse subjects dealt with include aircraft handling, air law, flight planning, meteorology, navigation, radio procedures, Books available include the Student Pilot's Manual, the Flying Training Manual, and Flight Radio for Pilot's Manual, which are all sufficient to take you to GFPT standard.

Beyond the GFPT, more advanced publications are available for the more experienced pilot, but once again, it's a good idea to consult with your trainers to see what's the best value.

SUNGLASSES

A good-quality pair of sunnies is essential to you as a pilot They will reduce glare and minimise harmful effects of the sun on your eyes. It's important to choose sunglasses with a durable frame and high quality lenses as they are sure to get a good workout in the air and on the ground.

TORCH

A small torch has a multitude of uses to you as a pilot It is needed during night flying or any time when you need more light than is available in the cockpit.

Alternatively, if you're planning an early departure, it's no fun completing your walk-around and pre-flight checks in the dark You may not use it often, but it's amazing when equipment such as this comes in handy.

WAC RULER AND PROTRACTOR

The WAC ruler enables you to measure distance in nautical miles on World Aeronautical Charts (WAC) and Visual Terminal Charts (VTC) and is a must for cross country flight planning.

The protractor enables you to determine your track to follow in flight, and to recalculate it if required. These two pieces of equipment are used together both for flight planning and en route navigation.

What do all those aviation terms and acronyms mean?

THESE ARE FREQUENTLY-USED TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS WHICH PILOTS NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH.

ADF: Australian Defence Force

ADF: Also automatic direction finder - a radio navigation device still in use but doomed to eventual extinction when it is replaced by GPS.

AERIAL WORK: Includes all aerial survey and photography, spotting, aerial stock mustering, search and rescue, ambulance, towing including glider, target and banner towing, advertising, cloud seeding, fire fighting, parachute dropping and coastal surveillance - sometimes several of those in one day. (Aerial work does not include the tasks performed by flight attendants.)

AEROBATICS: Flying aeroplanes in interesting and unusual ways, a little like aerial gymnastics. Not for the fainthearted, but good aerobatics training definitely enhances your flying skills, and some airlines require that their cadet courses include it.

AGRICULTURAL FLYING: Operations involving the carriage and/or spreading of smelly chemicals, seed, fertiliser or other substances for agricultural purposes, including operations for the purpose of pest and disease control.

AIRCRAFT: The term aircraft refers to fixed wing and rotary wing, manned or otherwise, powered aircraft and balloons. Paper planes don't qualify

AIRCRAFT CATEGORIES: The categories of aircraft defined in Part 5 of the CAR -that is, aeroplanes, helicopters, balloons, gyro-planes and airships.

AIRCRAFT MOVEMENT: A take-off (aircraft departure) or a landing (arrival) is recorded as one aircraft movement. A 'touch and go" operation is counted as two movements. There's no justice!

ARN: Aviation reference number - the number given to a pilot or engineer by CASA, and which appears on their licence. It also appears on CASA circulars, invoices and 'please explain' letters.

ATC: Air traffic Control - the people in control towers and elsewhere who direct the movement of aircraft to ensure they are separated. They used to invite you up to the tower for coffee sometimes but new security rules make that a bit dodgy.

ATPL: Air transport pilot licence - issued for aeroplanes and helicopters. Air transport pilots may fly an aeroplane as pilot in command or co-pilot in any operation. An ATPL is required to command a larger airline type aircraft with fare paying passengers.

ATSB: Australian Transport Safety Bureau - the organisation which investigates all transport accidents including aircraft accidents and serious incidents.

BUSINESS FLYING: Flying by the aircraft owner, his/her employees or the fairer of the aircraft for business or professional reasons, but not directly for hire or reward.

CAO: Civil Aviation Orders -some of the rules relating to flying in Australia

CAR: Civil Aviation Regulations - more rules relating to flying in Australia.

CASR: Civil Aviation Safety Regulations - More, newer, but not necessarily less confusing rules relating to flying in Australia.

CHARTER: Carriage of cargo or passengers on non-scheduled operations by aircraft operators or their employees for hire or reward, but excluding regular public transport operations (scheduled services). "Air taxi" is another description.

CFI: Chief Flying Instructor, an individual who is appointed by a flying school and CASA to supervise the flying training given by the school. Some are not terrifying figures.

CHIEF PILOT: A commercial pilot who is appointed by an operator and approved by CASA to be in charge of all flight operations for that operator, in terms of flying standards and compliance. Most of these people are not terrifying figures.

CIR: Command instrument rating - a licence to fly an aircraft solely by reference to instruments under the IFR alone in suitably equipped aircraft.

CORPORATE AVIATION: Same as business aviation.

CPL: Commercial Pilot Licence. Commercial pilots may fly for hire or reward (with some restrictions.)

DAME: Designated aviation medical examiner - a doctor who's authorised by CASA to conduct pilot medical examinations for licence issue and renewal.

DME: Distance measuring equipment - another radionavigation device. This one provides accurate distance from a ground station. Also doomed eventually to be replaced by GPS.

DUAL FLYING: Flying in an aircraft fitted with fully functioning dual controls for the purpose of flying training by a person who is authorised by the regulations to give that training.

ENDORSEMENT: A licence entry indicating that a pilot is qualified to fly a particular type or class of aircraft. The authorisation is in the form of a log book entry. (Some operational approvals which require a log book entry are also called endorsements)

ERSA: The En route Supplement Australia contains a huge amount of information that is important for safe flight, although some of it is unnecessary for VFR operations (See the alternative under this section VFG)

FIXED WING: Describes aeroplanes (including gliders) as opposed to helicopters, balloons, gyroplanes or airships, which fly for reasons some fixed-wing pilots pretend not to understand.

FLIGHT REVIEW: An informal examination of a pilot's aeronautical skill and knowledge conducted biennially (every two years!) to see if standards have been maintained. Conducted by a Grade

1. or appropriately qualified Grade

2. instructor.

FLIGHT TIME: In the case of heavier-than-air aircraft, the total time from when the aircraft first moves under its own power for the purpose of flight until the moment at which it comes to rest on completion of the flight

GA: General aviation, which is defined as all non-scheduled flying activity in aircraft allocated a VH registration by CASA, but excluding VH-registered sailplanes (powered and unpowered), ultralight aircraft, and hang gliders.

GFPT: General flying progress test - this will determine whether or not you have been absorbing all that instruction.

GLASS COCKPIT: Instrument panel in which older electro-mechanical instruments are replaced by digital electronic instruments.

GPS: Global positioning system - satellite based navigation device of remarkable accuracy when not dropped into sea water.

GNSS: Global navigation satellite system -the satellite navigation system from which GPS gets its information.

HIGH CAPACITY AIRCRAFT: A transport aircraft certified as having a maximum seating capacity exceeding 38 seats or maximum payload exceeding 4,200kg.

ICAO: International Civil Aviation Organisation

IFR: Instrument flight rules, required fora flight in 'non-visual meteorological conditions'. Rough translation: The weather is so bad you can't see anything outside the aircraft.

ILS: Instrument landing system, a radio navaid providing precision runway approaches but also doomed to eventual extinction when it is replaced by a GPS based substitute.

INSTRUMENT RATING: A flight crew rating that indicates that a pilot is qualified to fly an aircraft by sole reference to the aircraft's instruments (e.g. when the weather is so bad you can't see anything out the windows.)

INSTRUCTOR RATING:A flight crew rating that indicates that a pilot is qualified to train other pilots. (People who have just learned to fly can be quite good at it, because they still remember what they were told.)

LAME: Licensed aircraft maintenance engineer - an engineer who is authorised to repair and maintain aircraft. They can also refuel, check your tyres, and tell you when you need to clean your windscreen.

MPL: Multi-crew pilot licence - a new concept described in these pages, which will vastly change they way airline pilots are trained.

MTOW: Maximum takeoff weight - the maximum weight set by certification procedures at which a particular aircraft type may take off. This weight is established by two factors - aircraft performance, and structural strength.

MULTI-ENGINE AIRCRAFT: An aircraft with more than one engine - not limited to two.

NIGHT FLYING: Flight time which accrues during the period between the end of the evening civil twilight and the beginning of morning civil twilight.

NVFR: Night visual flight rules. These rules set the conditions under which a pilot may fly at night without being qualified to fly under IFR.

PIC: Pilot In Command - the pilot who's solely responsible for the operation and safety of the aircraft during flight time. Refers to single pilots as well as captains of multi-pilot aircraft.

PPL: Private pilot licence, flying for pleasure, sport or recreation, or personal transport not associated with a business or profession.

QANTAS: Queensland & Northern Territory Aerial Services - has more recently extended its operations.

RA-AUS: Recreational Aviation Australia (formerly the Australian Ultra-light Federation) - the organisation which administers ultra-light aircraft flying in Australia.

RPT - REGULAR PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Flight operations performed for remuneration and conducted to fixed schedules over specific routes, and on which seats and/or cargo space is available to the general public.

ROTARY WING: Describes helicopters and gyrocopters, whose wings are moving faster than the aircraft and are therefore hard to see.

SPL: Student pilot licence (or PLPAX: student pilot licence holder with passenger carrying privileges; ie. has passed a GFPT.)

TIF: Trial instructional flight - half an hour or more in which both you and the instructor will help one another assess whether you're likely to fit the mould.

VFG: Visual Flight Guide - a pock-book containing everything you need to know about flying under the VFR.

VFR: Visual Flight Rules - you can still see outside but you mustn't go to closer than specified distances to clouds or the ground.
