PSMO College: A Vision of Empowering Society

PSMO (Pocker Sahib Memorial Orphanage College) was established in 1968, affiliated to the University of Calicut. PSMO College shares a glorious past of academic excellence. In March 2016, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India rated with ‘A’ grade. PSMO College situated at a distance of 13 Km from Calicut Airport, 8 Km from Parappanangadi Railway Station, and 1 Km from NH 17 from Kakkad.

During the beginning of the 2^nd half of the 20^th century, Tirurangadi was a place of educationally backward masses. But there were many social leaders who were actively participated in the freedom struggle of India. Some great leaders took their valuable efforts to empower these backward people. Even though the popularity of Tirurangadi spread among people, the major problem faced by the society was the backwardness in the education field. At this time, the management of Tirurandai Muslim Orphanage Committee decided to serve for the society. Their long visions lead to establish PSMO College at Tirurangadi in 1968. Anyway, the college was established as a junior aided college, affiliate to the University of Kerala. But after few days the college changed its affiliation to the University of Calicut due to the University re-organization in Kerala. Later college promoted to Post Graduate College in 1980.

Now, PSMO College is operating in around 21 acres of land. The college offers 10 Under Graduate courses and 7 Post Graduate courses, under aided scheme. Commerce department, Chemistry department and History department are upgraded to research departments. The college allows around 1500 students to study in every year with all the under graduate and post graduate courses. The period for an under graduate course is 3 years and post graduate course is 2 years.

Numbers of scholarships are awarded in every year for the College students. Which includes scholarships like UGC sponsored Indira Gandhi Single Girl Child Scholarship and other central and state scholarships. Applications for scholarships invited at the beginning of the course and apply through on-line. College Library and Digital Library

PSMO College has a fully computerized library and providing more than 42000 Books and 150 printed journals, news papers, magazines, e-books etc. The College library is one of the largest libraries in the state, Kerala. The broadband internet connection enables the students and teachers to learn more with the help of videos and other advanced facilities.

Civil Service Coaching Institute

A Civil Service Coaching Center is working in college and conducts classes in holidays. The main objective of the Civil Service Coaching Center is to help students for preparing for UPSC Civil Service Examination and other competitive examinations. Civil Service Coaching Center conducts interaction classes with Civil Servants.

IGNOU Study Center

IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) is operating in the college from 1992 onwards. Only those persons can join in IGNOU after the age of 18. IGNOU provides different courses. IGNOU is very much suitable for part- time and distant learners.

UGC Aided Equal Opportunity Centre & SC/ ST Minority Coaching Centre

UGC Aided Equal Opportunity Centre and SC/ ST Minority Coaching Centre is working in the college, provides students, courses for preparing various competitive exams, National Eligibility Test examination etc.

UGC Network Resource Centre is functioning in the college with the broadband internet facilities to assist learning of both teachers and students.

Sports and Physical Education

Physical Education department is controlling the sports and games activities of college. Reservation seats are allotted for each class for those students, who are actively participating in sports and games. Physical Education department prepares various college teams for football, cricket, volleyball, tennis and other items in each year.

College Hostel

The College provides hostel facilities for non residential students. A well functioning girls’ hostel is running in the college. There is also a sports hostel for male students.

College Canteen

A canteen is working within the College aiming the refreshment of the students and staffs.

A Co-operative store is working in the college availing stationary items, books, and other study materials etc.

The founders of PSMO College donated their life for the social services. Now the college has passed more than 42 successful years. But the present leaders of PSMO College are keeping the right path drawn by the founders of college. The importance of PSMO College is that, the institution serving for the society. At this same time many educational institutions are became profit hunters and commercialized the educational sector. So, the leaders of PSMO College are the role model for all. They are not receiving any penny amount of commission from staffs or students even at the time of students’ admission or staffs’ recruitment. It is a different institution. Many foreigners came and studying in the College. There arise a question why always PSMO College?
