The Perspectives: Oh Dear
In the photo above, Jerry Sandusky is being arrested on 45 counts of sexual abuse of young boys. This situation began in 1977, when Mr. Sandusky created a charity called The Second Mile that helped serve underpriveleged and at risk. Even after Sandusky retired from being a football coach, he continued working with the group of young boys through The Second Mile. In 2011, Jerry Sandusky was arrested of 52 counts of sexual abuse of young boys through his organization, The Second Mile. In the end, Mr. Sandusky was only found guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse and was sentenced on October 9, 2012 to 30 to 60 years in prison.
After reading the Penn State article about the football coach, my perspective is that I agree with the students and the citizens of the country on how they might have felt at first about the coach. I agree with the students because in their minds, they feel as if they lost a football coach, someone who cared about them and wanted them to win their football games. The students didn’t feel as if the actions that the coach did was bad because maybe in retrospect the students were in denial. The coachs’ actions led him to be fired, which caused the students to become angry and riot. I agree with the citizens because I feel that child molestation is wrong and shouldn’t be tolerated, no matter the circumstance. I feel as if the firing of the football coach was the right thing to do and that he should have also been sent to jail for his crime.
A sociological perspective might view this situation from a different viewpoint other than mine. The functionalist perspective might see this act as being deviant and something that is common in our society; something that is needed in order to let others know the limit of proper behavior. The conflict perspective might view this act as being unfair in that the football coach was given too much leniency and that he should have further punishment. Another conflict would be that a lot of people around the world would be outraged at the situation and may feel as if punishment should have been harsher. The interactionist perspective might see this act as being something that is learned from interactions with others. For example, we learn improper behavior, inappropriate language, and vulgarness from movies, t.v., radios, and newspapers.
On the other hand, some citizens’ perspective on this situation might differ from my own. I feel that their perspective would be as such that the football coach is a child molester and that he should be sent to prison. Unlike myself, some citizens would not agree with me when it comes to rioting because the football coach was fired. In the minds of some citizens, they only see the football coach from one perspective which is being a child molester and committing an act that is against the law and morally wrong. On the other hand, I am able to see from different perspectives because I am open-minded to the fact that other people around you may have a different perspective from your own.
The psychological perspective would be, since, the students were always interacting with the football coach, they were able to see his real personality, his kindness, his care, determination, and bravery. The students felt that this was the only side they knew of the coach and they didn’t understand or see the child molestation side of the football coach. The students see the football coach as a victim being picked on by everyone in the U.S. The students fell empathetic towards the coach because of who they knew he was as a person. The citizens of the U.S. only saw a child molester because they do not know the football coach at all, never interacted with him, only know him because of his actions that he committed. Therefore, the students are mad because he is fired. The citizens are mad because he committed a deviant act.
After a while, the students realized that the crime that the football coach committed was wrong. The students are humiliated by the fact that the football coach did what he did and that he was someone whom they really didn't know as much as they thought they did. The students went through a phase where they felt hurt and ashamed because they feel as if the adults are suppose to be trusted and keep us protected from deviants. In the end, sometimes that is not always true.
