Animal Cell

In this hub I will teach you all about the basic structure of plant and animal cells, the parts to them, the functions of these parts and some general information. I hope you find this hub educational and please follow me and leave a comment with any query you may have.

Animal Cell

The Animal Cell has no definite shape. Its components are:

  • Cell Membrane: This is a thin membrane on the outside of the cell. It's made out of phosolipids and proteins. It controls what enters and leaves the cell and is semi-permeable, meaning only certain substances can pass through it.
  • Nucleus: This is the control center of the cell. The DNA is found here in the form of chromatin (chromosomes). The nucleolus is the area of the nucleus where the ribosomes are made.
  • Cytoplasm: This is a jelly like fluid inside the cell membrane. All of the organelles are found here in the cytoplasm.
  • Ribosomes: These are tiny structures which are made of (maternal) mDNA and protein. Their function is to make protein.
  • Mitochondria: These supply energy to the cell by respiration.

The Nucleus, Cell Membrane and Cytoplasm can be seen under a normal light microscope but the other organelles (Ribosomes and Mitochondrion) can only be seen under a TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope).

Plant Cell

Plant Cells do have a definite shape (rectangular). Its components are:

  • Cell Wall: This gives structure to a plant as they have no bones like us humans. It is fully permeable meaning that it lets everything pass through it, unlike the semi-permeable membrane of the animal cell.
  • Cell Membrane: Is a thin membrane on the outside of the cell. It is made of phosolipids and proteins. It controls what enters and leaves the cell. It is semi-permeable meaning only certain things can pass through it. This is just like the cell membrane of the animal cell.
  • Cytoplasm: This is a jelly like fluid inside the cell membrane. All of the organelles are found here.
  • Nucleus: This is the control center of the cell. The DNA are found here in the form of chromatin (chromosomes). The nucleolus is the area of the nucleus where the ribosomes are made.
  • Vacuole: Stores water, sugars and salts. It is a large bubble like component.
  • Chloroplasts: These are green components and they are in charge of carrying out photosynthesis (The plants way of making its own food).
  • Ribosomes: These are a tiny structure which are made of (maternal) mDNA and protein. Their function is to make protein.
  • Mitochondria: These supply energy to the cell by respiration.

Only the Nucleus, Cell Membrane, Cell Wall, Cytoplasm and sometimes the Vacuole can be seen under a normal (light) microscope. To see the other organelles you must use a TEM.
