Proof Exercise is Medicine

Updated on October 4, 2015

All of us would like to look like this man - bulging biceps and six pack abdominal muscles. And all of us have this capability. We think we don't. We think we are too old, but we never are too old for fitness.

As we age we loose muscle tone but there is something we can do about that. Our body responds and wants to be young and healthy and strong.

Strength is not muscle bulk when combined with cardio.

Low body fat, tone muscles should be our goal.

Pills or Stairs

"A man's health can be judged by which he takes two at a time - pills or stairs." Joan Welsh

Purchasing Physical Fitness

"Physical fitness can neither be achieved
by wishful thinking nor outright purchase.”
Joseph Pilates

Growing Old is Not for Sissies and We CAN Achieve This

Growing Old is Not for Sissies and We CAN Achieve This.

No matter what our age, no matter our health ailments, there is an exercise program that can help you feel better both mentally and physically.

Health is more than the physical body. When we exercise we improve our mental outlook.

Imagine this body being your body. Imagine feeling strong and vibrant and looking great. Imagine feeling great.

It doesn't take 40 hours a week but it does demand time and effort.

The investment in your health, the investment in your muscle tone, the investment in your cardio each week will pay dividends.

Don't believe me - you don't have to - the proof is in this book series that follows aging seniors and showcases their youthful bodies.

The Best Doctors Anywhere

The best six doctors anywhere,

And no one can deny it,

Are sunshine, water, rest, and air,

Exercise and diet.

These six will gladly you attend,

If only you are willing,

Your mind they'll ease,

Your will they'll mend,

And charge you not a shilling.”

Wayne Fields

Sports and Medicine

Sports and medicine have been intertwined since the early 1950s here in the United States. Perhaps most notably with the creation of ACSM - American College of Sports Medicine. Yet in our normal medical realm even among the elite hospital centers of the world including Mayo Clinic, there is very little partnership with fitness.

Hospitals often have a health center in a completely separate building. Physicians and personal trainers have a rare opportunity to interact.

In my years as a certified personal trainer and hospital volunteer, the circles of interaction are sadly completely separate.

We need to incorporate the two professions together and recognize it is a truly a team effort.

We wouldn't have a football team with only offense - we know full well the value of defense and yet in the world of medicine we have these not just on different teams but on different fields. Think about it. How would football be played with just one side of the equation?

Share Your Thoughts

Should fitness and medicine be on the same team? In the same building?

How Exercise Can Be Better Than Meds

Exercise is AS Good or BETTER Than Meds for Serious Illness

A new study shows that exercises is as good or BETTER than meds for serious illness. The British Medical Journal, exercise works as well or better accordingly to the CDC, the majority of people are on pills but only 20% are meeting the minimum active standards. Why don't we exercise? They contend we are lazy essentially - I believe we have been trained incorrectly.

Serious Health Problems and Health Problems

Strokes, type 2 diabetes, heart disease all have clinical results that showcase that exercise the key to health.

More people take meds for symptoms that can be corrected with exercise.

Sadly, many find exercise not enjoyable and yet we have been trained wrong.

There are not enough clinical trials to promote exercise - why? There is funding for pills, there is limited funding for clinical trails that review the real results that exercise can offer.

Pills are easier than exercise but not as effective.

"What does this say about money controlling medical science?"

Exercise is Medicine

"Cancer cannot stop this dance.

Any weight can defy gravity.

Healing my heart means making some changes.

Diabetes won't stop me from seeing my world.

Exercise is therapy.

Exercise is freedom.

Exercise is life.

Exercise is serenity.

Exercise is medicine"

Exercise is Beautiful

Exercise will "cure" you often more than the pills, the clinical trails prove this. And while there are not many clinical trails to prove this fact, it remains a well documented fact. The fact that is not proven and never will be in "clinical trails", is exercise unlike meds extend a glow that comes from inside derived from real health.

This inter glow can only be achieved with a well constructed exercise program. The person attending the treadmill, putting in the basic time requirements for exercise is NOT going to feel the full benefits of fitness,

If you are truly fit, your skin will look different, you will feel different. If you exercise to a standard that includes more than just the allotted minutes you will achieve a different feeling in your physical well being that others will note.

Being physically healthy is more than a good weight, more than the the minimum time needed, it is an energy and an interior glow that makes not just you feel good but others around you.

Share the beauty, exercise and extend yourself to truly being healthy and you will feel the beauty and others will feel your interior beauty. Health is not about external make-up, health is about the beautiful glow that you feel and you are able to share with others - this only is available with a holistic exercise regiment. Track your strength, track your cardio, see the results and others will notice too!

Strength in Older Adults Means Health

Fitness is More Than Strength - It is Health

Fitness is more than just strength and having muscle tone and endurance it is truly health. Growing old gracefully means working out and keeping the posture of our youth, the muscle tone of our youth and keeping our mid alert. Fitness is fundamental to good health.

As We Age - We Must Fight

We know scientifically and just from simple observation that as we age, we loose allot of physical and mental capabilities. We must not hit middle age without recognizing the daily need for fitness. We must actively fight for our health and address these needs:

  • Lack of Muscle Tone
  • Forward Head Illness
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Lack of Endurance

A wise and successful woman aptly stated the secret of success is work. We must work at our health. Health comes readily easily in our youth, with wisdom we must recognize the changes in our body's needs and change our daily activities to serve the needs of our aging body.

Growing old is not for the weak, growing old is not for sissies - silly statement but resoundingly true.

If You Are Willing To Work - This is the Secret in Life

“The big secret in life is that there is no big secret. Whatever your goal, you can get there if you’re willing to work.” Oprah Winfrey

I too hope I will always include exercise in my daily program. My husband laughs at me when I fit in a tiny ten minutes but it is ten minutes more than nothing and all those ten minutes throughout the year and years do add up.

Some great advice here. Yes exercise can delay many of the effects of ageing and reduce the risk of developing a whole range of degenerative diseases. I hope I will always do it.
