Refuting Descartes

Updated on November 9, 2014

René Descartes.

This French philosopher and mathematician lived from March 31st,1596 - February 11th,1650.

Descartes was considered the Father of Modern Philosophy. Many of his works are studied very closely even today.

Descartes was also a key figure in the Scientific Revolution.

Many people still argue about Descartes stand on God. He was considered a devout Roman Catholic, but also the Pope placed all Descartes written works on the List of Prohibited Reading in 1663.

Many claim he was an "secret atheist" while others maintain he had strong Christian beliefs. It seems no one really knows but God Himself.

Below is one of the most famous of Descartes works if you are interested in reading.

I have never been all that "hip" on philosophy.

As taste buds change approximately every seven years, maybe too, my thoughts and research is changing.

I have begun to read a book called 50 Philosophy Ideas You Really Need To Know.

I have begun a chapter about the great philosopher: René Descartes.

As I read the majority of this chapter, I snickered. A Hub was about to come from this.

I had plans to take my nightly shower and go to bed, but when I explained my thoughts to the amazing wife I am blessed with, she told me to start writing. "You may forget it if you don't," Maggie exclaimed!

Great advice from a wonderful work of God. Lastheart, my lovely wife, you are truly blessed.

Yes, I am about to refute Descartes, but first read a short biography of this great philosopher at the right.

My Refute

You may find this humorous. I did at first until i really considered the whole matter. The humor actually turned to sadness.

The statement and philosophical theory by Descartes I am about to refute is in Latin:

Cogito ergo sum

in French:

Je pense, donc je suis

in Spanish:

Pienso, luego existo

and in English:

I think, therefore I exist

As I consider this philosophy from Descartes, for many humans this is true. It was probably more true during Descartes days than now.

Why do I say this? read on...

The Death of Common Sense

I think, therefore I exist.

Hmm, I guess the guy that just raced by me in his little Toyota pickup on a blind corner and just missed getting hit by a dump truck doesn't exist.

I guess it really wouldn't have mattered if the dump truck would have hit the Toyota, because the guy driving the small pickup doesn't exist.

He couldn't because by Descartes words you only exist if you think. That guy surely wasn't thinking

The Fast-Food Drive Thru

The girl who took the order sure seemed to me like she existed. She spoke and took the order. I ordered a cheeseburger and a vanilla shake. I received a Coca Cola and a fish sandwich. She told me the cost was 4.24 so I handed her a five dollar bill.

I thought she existed because her hand touched mine when she handed me $8.16 in change and my sack with my order.

I shook my head as I drove away chewing on the fish sandwich that they paid me to eat.

Nope, that worker couldn't exist, because Descartes said only those who think exist.

The Final Blow To Descartes Philosophy

Obama and the Democrats

I have always thought they existed.

Several people told me how he ate fried chicken as they looked on at a restaurant In Lebanon, Missouri when he ran for his first term as President of the United States. Some even showed me the autograph signed Barack Obama.

The autographs must have been fake according to Descartes.

I have seen the others on television. People like Nancy Pelosi and her cronies all seemed like real people who existed, but it all must be a figment of my imagination.

After all, who would think a Government that cannot control their own spending, have an unemployment rate going sky-high, and cannot even manage Social Security, would be able to control the healthcare of all the people in the United States with a program called Affordable Care Act? It is known as Obamacare, but I have no idea why...he doesn't exist

No René, they don't or cannot exist if your philosophy is correct.

Is Descartes?

Is the philosophy I think, therefore I exist accurate?

See results

You may think this funny.

I did at first until I really consider all the implications.

In reality, Obamacare could sound like a great thing, but consider it closer.

The government will want all costs cut to the bare minimum. People will NOT get the healthcare they actually need through this plan. It has been like that for quite some time with medicare, why would Obamacare be any different?

It will be worse.

Fight back Americans!

You still have an opportunity. Get these non-existent individuals out of office.

Put someone in that truly cares about America.

Before It's Too Late!

Some of My Conspiracy Thoughts

René Descartes,

I must apologize sir for using your great words for satirical purposes.

You were a great philosopher and your ideas were balanced and way ahead of their time. If I had my way, I would bring you as President and send all these goofballs back to your period.

I wonder what the Pope would have thought about Obama, Pelosi and the rest?

I have my thoughts (as pictured below)

The Frog is signing off

By the way you may want to either buy my Philosophical book or maybe my Conspiracy Book. Both are listed here at the side.

I don't know what to think. Does that mean I exist or do not?

I'm sure Descartes was trying hard enough. He didn't have the Internet so he had to work a lot harder.

Very entertaining hub and good food for thought.

      Nice hub, Froggy213.

I voted NO because the answer is no.

And I voted your hub UP and useful and funny and interesting because it is.

Hummmm...learning how you refute philosophy. Very interesting to see how we can focus on something and yet get from it different things. Oh, by the way I voted "no" should be "Yes" when you read:

      John 1:1

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
