What is Rocky Glen?

Rocky glen is what should be and what could be a place where families go to enjoy the beauty of a unique place in Illinois. From its majestic limestone cliffs and rocky formations to the flora and fauna not usually found in central Illinois, due to it's unique geographical formations, It is a place rare to these parts. I used to go there with some of my cousins when I was kid, usually around mother's / father's day when we all were at my grandparent's house nearby the glen. It was a nice 1/2 mile hike to get to it, and there's nothing noteworthy on that part of the trek, until you begin to descend into a creek valley, and it opens up before you. When I went, there were many trails, and we took the one that came out on the ledge overlooking the whole place. It was always a thrill to look over the edge and take it all in from above.

Why I love it.

I think part of the reason for my continuing love for this place has always been a link to my childhood, but when I was a child, it was a different reason. It seemed like such a magical place, like nowhere I had ever been before. There were awesome rock formations and a waterfall you could stand under, and drink out of.(I know now we shouldn't have, but back then, we did) Anyone who lives in Illinois can tell you how different Rocky Glen is from anyplace they have been in the state, and how cool it is to be there. The coolness of the air in the bottom, the adrenaline rush of standing on the edge of the ledge, looking down on it all, playing in the waterfall. It's a magical thing for an Illinois boy. There are several places in and near Rocky Glen to explore and see. There were trails leading all over down there, up and down, behind and around.

I have not been there for quite some time, as I have grown older, and it is in private hands now. I have thought of Rocky Glen from time to time, and they were always pleasant memories to be sure. I have found an organization ( ) which will take you on a guided hike once a month and I plan to go when it warms up this spring, as I want my kids to see it, too. I am looking forward to that day, and hope to see you there!

*** added later: We actually had the chance to go there this spring, on may 12, and it was fantastic! some of these pics are mine I took on the trip, as well as the friends of rocky glen group's facebook page has MY photo as their main pic now! how cool is that!?

The pictures are so beautifully shot, it makes the reader want to jump into that place you portrayed. I can just imagine the shivers I'll get by standing on the ledge and looking over it far below. And the frozen waterfall! amazingly beautiful.

The beauty of nature can make anybody poetic.

Thanks for the share. Voted up and beautiful.

Wow, Rocky Glen looks very similar to a few places I've visited in Britain. If I'm not mistaken, the tree closest to the camera in the first photo is a Sycamore. That picture of the frozen waterfall is awesome. Voted up and shared.
