Sample Plans for a Substitute Teacher

Updated on February 18, 2016

When a teacher is going to be absent, it is very important that he/she leave detailed plans and directions for the substitute teacher. In my experience with subbing, I have been in classrooms where the teacher left no instructions at all or very vague directions. This makes it so much harder for anyone trying to cover the class that day.

Plans should be very specific and detailed. All copies of any work to be accomplished that day should be done in advance by the teachers, and all materials needed should be near the instructions. When I was teaching, this is a sample of what I used to leave the substitute.

February 4, 2015 - Kindergarten

Thank you for covering my class today. They are a great bunch. Please leave me a note to let me know who was absent and how the day went.

8:15 - 8:40 - The kids will come in between this time frame. They may have center time until 9:00. No one is to play in the blocks area today. Please check their folders and put homework and any other notes on my desk. The folders go in the bin by the door.

9:00 - Clean up then have circle time. The procedure is written on the wall by the carpet. The kids know which jobs they are assigned to and which songs they sing for certain activities.

9:30 - Math - Do pages 41 and 42 together. Books are on the back shelf. If done early, they may read a book until gym.

10:10 - 10:40 - Gym - Please walk the class to the gym, then pick them up at 10:40. Let them get drinks afterwards.

10:45 - 11:00 - Snack

11:00 - 11:20 - Handwriting pages 30-34

11:20 - 11:55 - Journals - Have the students write about what they did over the winter vacation. They are to write at least four sentences, then illustrate their story.

12:00 - 1:00 - Lunch and recess

1:05 - 2:00 - Reading - Read the story together on p. 56. Ask them the comprehension questions in the teacher's edition. Then have them do the activity on p. 62.

2:05 - 2:40 - Library - Have two children take down the books to the library in the morning.

2:45 - Pack up

2:55 - Children who take the bus, will be called. The list is by the door.

3:00 - Dismissal - Please walk the children outside and stand by the gate. Please wait until every child is picked up before leaving.
