Celebrating the New Year Since 153 B.C.

The first New Year celebration is thought to have taken place in Rome in the year 153 B.C. New Year's Day is celebrated on January 1 in nearly all countries — the first day of the year in the Julian calendar that was used in ancient Rome, and the first day of the year in the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian calendar has been adopted by most countries for official, adminstrative, and civil purposes.

Some countries use other calendars for religious purposes, and in those countries New Year's Day falls on other than January 1 when viewed on a Gregorian calendar...Confusing, isn't it?!?

The Russian Orthodox New Year, the Chinese New Year, also called the Lunar New Year, and the Korean New Year are celebrated on days in January other than the 1st. The Persian (Iranian) New Year (Nowruz) is celebrated in March.

      Marcy,

It's nice to "see" you again. Thanks for reading my article and commenting in it.

I published this Hub three years ago. It receives page views throughout the year, not just at the end of December. The 24-hour period ending some time on December 31st was a personal record for me ... This Hub received more than 1000 page views in 24 hours!

      Have a wonderful 2015!

      Audrey (vocalcoach),

Thanks for reading my article and adding your comment. When I was revising my Hub a year or so ago, I had the idea to include a video of "someone" singing Auld Lang Syne. I found three wonderful versions, so rather than decide, I included all of them. My favorite is the Rod Stewart version.

Have a wonderful year, my friend!

      Dear Daisy,

How clever of you to add these three versions of Auld Lang Syne. My speaker seemed to be missing a connection so I couldn't compare these wonderful voices. I'm a big Rod Stewart fan so I'd most likely choose his video as my favorite.

What an undertaking this must have been! Fantastic! Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful, interesting and will certainly share.

Thanks dear Daisy and a very Happy New Year!

      Laurinzo,

Thanks for reading my article and commenting in it. The images are all from Wikimedia Commons, my favorite source for photographs for my Hubs.

You might want to see if you can find recordings online of the languages you want to try. With some languages, the same phrase can mean different things, depending upon the inflection in one's voice.

I love this bridging of the language barrier, and if i'm brave enough I may try a few ... once I am sure i'm not slaughtering the language with my pronunciations... this is a very good one...

      Definitely interesting and useful!

I love the images you chose as well.

      Audrey,

Thanks for reading and commenting in another of my linguistics Hubs. I'm glad you enjoy the series. I recently published some articles with words, phrases, and customs which will be helpful to travelers. I hope you'll have a chance to read those.

      India (K9keystrokes),

Thanks for reading my list and commenting. This article did take quite a bit of time to research, but it was worth it.

When you have time, you might want to check out my "I Love You" translations Hub.

What a great idea! I think this one has to get pinned on the fridge! What an abundant amount of research this must have required. Impressive, to say the least. Good stuff!

Wow, just wow! This is definitely a good recourse. I don't even know where to begin to try to pronounce majority of the sayings. Great list, Daisy! Happy New Year every day, I guess? :)

Daisy, all Thais celebrate two new years: the western new year on January 1, and the Buddhist New Year which is celebrated April 13-15. Thai-Chinese also celebrate the Chinese New Year which can fall anywhere from around January 21-February 19 depending on when the first moon of the first month of the year occurs. I am sharing this with my followers.

      Nell,

I wouldn't even attempt to pronounce some of the translations. I might wind up saying something entirely different and get myself into a lot of trouble.
