School Uniforms For Girls - Skorts, Scooters and Culottes

Updated on August 26, 2015

When choosing school wear for your daughter, it's important to keep a lot of important factors in mind.

These factors include price, quality, amount of time it will last, how fast your daughter will grow out of it and also important - modesty.

Being lady like isn't always the top of a school girl's list - especially if she's into sports. Of course skirts always run the hazard of showing a bit much when worn during very active events by active girls.

Of course girls will often argue that wearing pants or shorts just doesn't look as good and is very unfashionable.

Below you'll find some other options that allow your daughter to maintain her modesty while still wearing a high quality and appealing skirt.

Skorts, Culottes & Scooters

Skorts, Culottes & Scooters all provide great options for maintaining great style and modesty at the same time.

Each one is similar but of course which style will suit your daughter will depend both on her and her school.

A skort is a pair of shorts with a flap of same color fabric that wraps around the front, giving the appearance of a skirt.

A scooter is very similar to a skort, except that it consists of a pair of shorts attached to a skirt that goes all the way around.

A culotte is a skirt which has a special join in the middle, making it appear as a skirt which actually being a loose pair of shorts.

The word is of French origin.

You'll need to be specific if you ask for a culotte, since the name has several disambiguations including (historically), man's pants, as well as (currently) ladies underwear.

Other Options

If you can't find a suitable skirt or simply want to use one your daughter already owns, another option is a pair of bike shorts or short shorts.

There are many colors available to match school uniforms, whether they be green, blue, red or black.

If you prefer you can also sew these into the waistband of the skirt for your own home made skorts.

Styles, Colors & Lengths

When choosing a skort, culotte or scooter it's important to take several things into consideration:

  1. Length - If you're looking for a very short skirt, it's probably better to go with a scooter or skort, since these do fully cover the thigh to hip area.
  2. Style - Each of these types of skirts comes in a variety of styles. However some come with pleats while others do not. If you prefer easy ironing (no pleats) it may be a better option to go with a simple scooter.
  3. Color - As you can see on the right the colors are limited if you wish to buy from Amazon. Of course you'll need to check with your school to see what colors are appropriate. However clicking through on the right will also give you more color, style and size options.
