Second attempt at IITJEE/JEE:Should you go for it?

Updated on December 29, 2012

Introduction.

Every year after JEE this question haunts thousands of students in India. There is no specific yes-no answer to this question. It requires a lot of analysis of the situation you are in.It varies according to your rank in other examinations, your family condition, mindset and etc.I would like to analyse and help you in each of these conditions. If your situation is entirely different from these feel free to write it down in the comments.I would try to help you out.

Statistics

Statistically it is found that repeaters are much more successful in clearing JEE than freshers.!!! Though the number of repeaters sitting in the exam are much less than freshers they account for about 60% of the selected candidates.!!! Isn't that encouraging !!!

Case 1: Cracked IIT with a low rank.

Now this is a very typical case where many students fail to analyse properly. In this case never ever go for any second attempt and I will tell you why.Take it from an IITian itself!

In each and every IIT there is an option of department change after the first year depending solely on your academic performance in the first year. Now when people think of taking an second attempt they do it hoping that they will study harder for 1 year and better their present rank to get a better branch in their desired IITs. But the fact is you can get a better stream without studying that hard and moreover without losing one year. There is also this chance that you may fall ill or maybe that somehow it becomes one of those bad days in your life!It becomes a huge stress also. The reason people don't think like this is because they don't know these rules before coming to IIT! I have known cases where students went for a second attempt bettered their rank got admitted and then in the end of their first year they end up getting such high marks that they regrett going for a second attempt. Moreover if you are dropping because the stream you would be getting doesn't have a high pay package according to you then take this.In all IITs the highest pay packages are always bagged by Computer Science students. The next group of firms those offer highest packages just after CS firms are the finance.consulting and investment companies!! And the fact is that they take students from all branches!!! They just see your analytical skills and number crunching capabilities!!! Most of the well placed guys even from departments like Mechanical Engineering end up working in investment banking firms. Now the grades required to get to a particular branch depends on its demand.I will try to give you a rough idea about the required grades in one of my later post. Now another thing is that if you are getting good branches like CS or ECE in the top NITs then you can consider that as well because from placement point of view the placements and packages of these branches in top NITs are even better than that of departments like Mechanical,Chemical,Metallurgy, mining etc of the IITs.

P.S.-Architecture is the only department from where or to where department change can't be done.

Case 2:Did not crack IIT but getting top NITs or other top colleges

If this the case then definitely go for the top NIT or the other top colleges like BITS-Pilani because it is a safer and much better option than taking another attempt. If you are getting a good branch than never look back and even if you are getting a not so good branch take it because again here also you have the option of department change and here its is a bit easier!

Case 3: None of the above.

If this is the case than first think what was the reason that prevented you from cracking IIT.Was your score close enough to the cutoff? Was it one of those unlucky days? Was it due to a lot of silly mistakes?Think and analyse if you can correct it over another year.Think if you have the grit to hold on for another year.Think if you are ready to take chances. If the answer is yes then definitely go for it

Last word

At the end its your life and your decision, others can just give advice and help you think.Think carefully again and again do what you think is the best cause this one decision can change your life!!!

Well there is still a 3 months time and if u utilize this period well, believe me you will make it..... As a last minute suggestion i would like to tell you that whatever you do, start and try solving the previous 10 years question at least one month before the exam that helps a lot..if that's also not possible try to go through the previous years sample solutions at least...as for the second part of your question don't drop if you get into any of the old IITs in any branch..otherwise you can drop but still i would like to remind you that streams like CS in NIT Trichy is not any less...and i am not from Bangalore so don't really know about good coaching centres out there..but if FIITJEE is there you can join it as they maintain pretty much the same quality all over india and it is definitely a good institute!!!

i wanted to go for aeronautical engineering

but couldn't reach the cutoff due to a number of silly mistakes

i don't think i can wait for another year because the guilt of not getting through this year would eat me up

i am ready to work harder but the guilt stops me

      please help

Be calm and patient. The feeling of guilt will gradually go away with time.If you have the zeal there is no reason why you should not try another time!!! Remember Winners never quit and quitters never wins. And as you said you want to do Aeronautical engineering, you can also give the admission test for IIST. Its brand value is definitely lesser than the IIT's but in aeronautical engineering you will get the best education from this place because here you will meet people who work on real projects and have ample practical knowledge and the corresponding laboratories are also highly developed!!!

I appeared for my JEE Mains this year and expecting nearly 100 marks. Probably the reason is that I din't join a good institute specially for JEE instead I had joined classes for my boards who taught JEE just for namesake without even completing 50% portion. Actually I'm from Maharashtra State, for which the Boards has made compulsory for students to appear for JEE. Hence, I wasn't having much idea regarding JEE. But now, I'm planning to take a drop and want to crack IIT's. Is IITian's PACE a good institute for my goals.

      2. drop a year and give my 12th and jee again after preparing for a year by taking coaching

Sir I scored 92.5% in ISC 12th board with 92 marks in maths, 92 marks in physics and 69 marks in chemistry. Being a school topper till my 10th grade, I always wanted to top in 12th too. But due to bad company and many distractions,I wasted my two most important years and now I regret . I had not taken any coaching for competitions due to which my score in jee mains was 82/360.Nw my only chance to prove myself is cracking IIT and I am ready to put in real hard work for the same. I want to ask if 40% weight-age given to 12th board % is considering PCM marks because my 12th percentage is including my best four subjects (Maths,Physics, English and Computers) because in that case my jee mains and advance rank would suffer. Also is there any preference given to freshers over repeaters during placements and interviews? Please guide as I don't have much time to take a decision.

      Hello,

My name is Shreesh Kulkarni and I am a doctoral student at Texas A&M. My younger brother recently took his jee advanced entrance exam. He made it through the Mains but he predicts a bad rank in JEE advanced. Now the thing is he does not care about the placements as immediately after his undergrads he wants to get his Masters/PhD in a top university here in the United States. He secured a 93% in his boards too. He wants to retake the JEE exam and has an aim of getting into IIT- Kharagpur for a degree in ECE considering the great foreign university collaborations and internship opportunities there. He made it through BITS but the goa campus. But he knows what he wants and wants to go for it. I am not an ECE major or an IITian. I was hoping that you could share your thoughts on this. Any help is appreciated. My brother actually got in with a 100% scholarship at FIITJEE but screwed up in the end due to distractions. What coaching center would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

      Regards,

      Shreesh

@shreesh to get into IIT Kharagpur with ECE he would need a rank of well within 750.If he doesn't get a rank in JEE advanced this year,I believe it will be very hard for him to acheve a rank below 750 next year. Alternatively he can enter IIT Kharagpur with any other department(except Architecture) and get a department change to ECE. For a department change to ECE he would need a GPA of around 9.4. Now that is difficult but getting a less than 750 rank is much more difficult. Also considering that JEE is one day exam a lot depends on THE DAY which is not the case in the semester exams of IIT ,you can always make a comeback! I have given my 2 cent now it is upon him to decide.

      Cheers!

@mohd rafi Going by placements if you take up CSE in other colleges and then trying for GATE is a good idea. For other departments it is not a good idea for the same reason!

      Hello Sir

I've scored 141 in mains, 120 in advanced and 85% in cbse boards. I expected much better board marks, around 93%, but due to improper checking I'm stuck with 85%. I'm from delhi and I my IP univ rank is 3800 so I can get a good college there but I don't want to be in IP. I already did coaching from a reputed coaching centre in Delhi. I'm not able to decide whether I should go join IP univ college and prepare for iit/jee mains along with it or do a complete drop? Also my boards % are still gonna be a major problem next year but I don't think I'll sit for the improvement exams. But I don't want to go to IP so..a partial drop or a complete drop?

Sir, according to my marks in JEE advanced 2014, I think my rank will be around 5100 to 5400 after comparing with previous year results. I think I would get mining Engineering, Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture, Applied Geology etc. in IIT Kharagpur. When I gave the previous year paper's at home, my worst rank was around 2000, and my best rank within 500(as per rank vs marks of previous year). But I made a number of silly mistakes on tne day of examination(about 20 marks) and also couldn't complete the paper. Sir, if I get into mining engineering in IIT KGP, can I get into top streams like CSE , ECE or EE after the first year. Or should I drop a year. Or should I get into an NIT? Also is it possible to write JEE main and Advanced after taking admisssion into an NIT. Your suggestion will be very helpful

      in dilemma

at present i am in class 12.will give jee in 2015.in class 11 i followed a few books like HCverms ,rd sharma, abc physics ,chem. frm the very beginning i was extremely adamant of ginving jee twice(2015-16).[specially bcoz i have seen my elder bro gave WBJEE twice .in the first his rank was 903,and in the 2nd yr his rank came down to 133.OMG.he ranked 7800 in IITJEE 2013] .So naturally i was tempted .but now as days passed by ,my frnds and teachers are sugesting me not to loose 1 WHOLE year like that .according to them it is impossible to study the same old syllabus twice.

i personally feel that if i can somehow manage to get 90% above in CBSE 2015 and then givve jee 2016 i can do better by following iit books

my academic performance ,though not exceptional ,but has been always good,i scored 93% in ICSE 2013.

pls sir tell me what to do ?if i opt for 2nd time and get depressed ,what to do at that time?should i consult some psychiatrist ??

HELP is the word and i need it frm U !!!!

thnx in advance .rply as early as possible

Sir My scores his year are as follows-

      Jee Main-155

      Jee Advanced-124

      VIT Rank - 15000

BITSAT score - 220 (no idea how i scored dis bad)

CBSE-85% (i seriously smell some correction mistake here)

      The problem is-

My dad is a renowned practicing Chartered Accountant in Jaipur. We are financially very good and thus i would be moving to US for my MBA after bachelors.

I am very much confused whether to go for a reattempt at JEE ADVANCE or go for a CA(Chartered Accountancy)

The NITs and other engg institutes don't interest me at all.My target is just BITS or IIT (just the tag)......Also should i go for CBSE improvement as my low marks would be a constraint for both Jee Main (backup) and later for my IIM application

I was expecting in iit but failed (Rank is 4200 OBC). I already paid for Amity university CSE. Still, I have a confusion whether to drop one year and try again for iit, or to join Amity Noida, finish 4 year and go for MS in top world universities? My specific confusion is, evaluating IIT's value with Amity plus MS, which would be more worthier?

Or any hurdles would be there from Amity graduation to MS in reputed US universities?

My 12 % is very poor so by trying hard next year I can't get a good NIT and I am also not eligible to appear in JEE ADVANCE as I do not fall under CBSE's top 20 percentile criterion

The options open before me are to join any of average private collage or to drop and with that give 12 board exams again

Sir, my particulars are as follows:

      Jee mains marks: 113

      Class 12, 2014: 95.2%

      Rank: 32000+

      Delhi category

I have been allotted information technology in IGDTUW, formerly IGIT college of Indraprastha University Delhi.

I am not satisfied with my performance and want to try for jee advanced2015. So, should I take an admission in this college and then proceed or go to a coaching institute in kota and prepare solely for iit jee advanced. I would request you to reply as soon as possible because I have to decide within 3 days or so. I was awaiting for my admission in DTU as last year's cutoffs went down to 40000+. But, the same did not happen this year. Please help, your advice will be valuable.

THE BEST BRANCH IS CSE . BUT IT DOESN'T MEAN ONE GO FOR BTECH IN CSE FROM ANY THIRD CLASS COLLEGE (i.e VIT. SRM. MANIPAL . OR ANY PRIVATE INSTITUTE etc ). TO DO CSE ONE NEED TO OPT FOR IIT. TOP NIT(WARRANGAL.TRICHY.). IIITH.& BITS PILANI. OVER THE YEARS IT IS SEEN THAT STUDENT WHO FAIL TO GET CSE BRANCH IN IIT BOMBAY.IIT DELHI.IIT MADRAS. IIT KANPUR.IIT ROORKEE.IIT GUWAHATI.IIT BHU. GO FOR IIITH OR BITSS PILANI OR TOP NIT WARRRANJAL. ALLL TOP CAMPANY VISIT THIS CAMPUSS AND PLACEMENT DEPENDS UPON THEE STUDENTS IRRESPECTIVE WHEATHER HE IS FROM IIT OR IIITH OR NIT WAR OR NIT SURTHKAL OR BITS PILANI
