Simples rules of Vastu Shastra - Science of Architecture

Updated on May 7, 2012

Vastu Shastra is the science of construction applied in Hindu Architecture. This study or rules are applied in temples and residential houses in India. The basic concept of Vastu Shastra is quite similar to “Feng Shui” of China where it is believed that law of heavenly bodies influence human.

In Sanskrit language Vastu means “dwelling” and Shastra means “Science”.

Mythology Background

According to Hindu Mythology, A Vastu Purusha – Cosmic Man was born out of a drop of sweat of Lord Shiva (Supreme God of Hinduism) and became uncontrollable and destructive. God then brought him down to earth and placed him in such a way that his head points towards North-East and legs towards South-West direction. And 32 deities stayed along with him thus forming a grid.

Vastu Grid

Vastu Mandala is the grid having 64 grids for temples and 84 grids for residences. Each grid is occupied by a God and the important ruling Gods are: -

  • Center – Brahma, Creator of the world.
  • North –Lord of Wealth
  • East –Sun God
  • West –Lord of Water
  • South – Lord of Death
  • Northeast – Lord of Luck and Faith
  • Northwest – Lord of Winds
  • Southeast – Lord of Fire
  • Southwest – Lord of Ancestors

Vastu Shastra explains how to construct the rooms and other areas in a residence so that all the concerned Gods are pleased and provides you positive energy.

Fundamental Concept

According to Vastu Shastra, world is made up of five basic elements. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. Hence the science explains how to achieve the harmony between all the five elements so that there is a balance between human and nature.

Some Basic Vastu Advice

If you are going to construct your house, Vastu tells you how to select the plot for construction. It explains following points for selecting a plot: -

  1. The plot should not be too porous. Earth should not absorb water too quickly.
  2. The plot should not be of irregular shape. The ideal plot is either square or rectangular with length 1.5 times than the breadth.
  3. The slope of the plot should be such that the water flows towards North or East.
  4. Avoid land purchase near graveyard, hospital etc.
  5. It is not recommended to buy a plot facing the west direction.
  6. Avoid purchasing a plot with rivers or canal flowing on west or south side of the plot.
  7. A plot should have higher levels towards South or west.

Apart from this there are rules for the construction of the house. Some of the common and simple rules are as follows: -

Design of the House: - The design of the house should either be square or rectangular. Other designs like U shape, V-shape, or triangular shapes are to be avoided. Angles obstruct positive energy flows.

Columns: The total number of columns used for construction should be even in numbers. The exposed ones for any architectural purpose should also be even.

Staircase: Vastu explains stairs to be builds towards the south, west or south-west direction of the residence. The number of steps should be odd. i.e 5, 7, 9, 11 etc. One should start climbing stairs with his right foot and finish it with the same foot. Prayer room should not be located below the staircase.

Bedrooms: The master bedroom should be towards the South-West or North-West side of the house and Children’s bedroom should be on North-West or West side of the house. While sleeping, a person should point his head towards East or South.

Drawing Room: This should be towards South or West or North-West side of the house.

Dining Room: This should be towards the west side of the house.

Guest Room: - This should again be towards the North-West Corner of the house.

Prayer Room: - Prayer room should be located towards North-East or North or East direction. While worshipping a person should face East side. One should not sleep in the prayer room.

In India, lots of people believe in this science and construct their house accordingly. Though it is very difficult to follow all the rules of the Vastu Shastra, but some very common terms can be followed. In India, there are lots of Vastu Consultants and lots of architects are well-versed with this science. Just like astrology, some Vastu Consultants do recommend few changes in the constructed house to improve a person’s life.
