# Simplifying simple expressions worksheet or homework sheet.

This worksheet contains various questions on simplifying expressions. They start off quite easy but get harder towards the end. All you need to do is add or subtract the same types of terms. That is only add x's to x's or y's to y's etc. The answers to these questions follow - if you get more than 3 wrong then you probably need to repeat this exercise on simplifying expressions.

## Questions On Simplifying Expressions

1. Simplify: x + x + x + x + x

2. Simplify x + x + x + y + y

3. Simplify 5x + 2y + y + 3x

4. Simplify 2x - 5y + 3x + 6y

5. Simplify 8x - 7y + 3x - 4y

6. Simplify x^{2} + x^{2} + x^{2}

7. Simplify 3xy + 4y^{2} + 7xy - 6y^{2}

8. Simplify -3h -7k - 5h + 9k

9. Simplify -4m - 6n + 2m - 4n

10 Simplify -8x - 5y + 8z - 2x + 3y - 11z

## Answers

1. Simplify: x + x + x + x + x

**5x**

2. Simplify x + x + x + y + y

*x terms: 3x*

*y terms 2y*

*Which gives 3x + 2y*

3. Simplify 5x + 2y + y + 3x

*x terms: 8x*

*y terms 3y*

*Which gives 8x + 3y*

4. Simplify 2x - 5y + 3x + 6y

*x terms: 5x*

*y terms: y (1y needs to be simplified to y otherwise you score no marks)*

*Which gives 5x + y*

5. Simplify 8x - 7y + 3x - 4y

**x terms: 11x**

**y terms -11y**

**So the final answer is 11x - 11y**

6. Simplify x^{2} + x^{2} + x^{2}

**3x ^{2} (make sure you don't put x^{6}- this is what you get if you were multiplying the exponents).**

7. Simplify 3xy + 4y^{2} + 7xy - 6y^{2}

**xy terms: 10xy**

**y ^{2} terms: -2y^{2}**

**So the final answer is 10xy - 2y ^{2}**

8. Simplify -3h -7k - 5h + 9k

**h terms: -8h**

**k terms: 2k**

**Which gives -8h + 2k**

9. Simplify -4m - 6n + 2m - 4n

**m terms: -2m**

**n terms: -10n**

**Which gives -2m - 10n**

10 Simplify -8x - 5y + 8z - 2x + 3y - 11z

**x terms: -10x**

**y terms: -2y**

**z terms: -3z**

**Which gives a final answer of -10x -2y -3z**
