Space debris: required cleaners
XXI century is characterized by not only the unprecedented progress and the growing awareness that the biosphere of our planet is very fragile. It is subject to threats from both the human impact of technology, and by the natural disasters that occur in space.
Among all the possible threats, I highlight seven key:
- solar storms and flares, known as emission coronal mass ;
- changes in the Earth's magnetosphere, which are the result of destruction of the protective shield of the planet;
- potential danger of collision with an asteroid or comet, which may lead to mass destruction of humanity ;
- Space debris;
- climate change provoked by the actions of man and the solar radiation in the atmosphere ;
- cosmic rays pulsars;
- potential threat to Earth, provoked by the action of microorganisms from meteorites and other space bodies that have reached the Earth's surface.
The threats described above are reminiscent of the "Russian roulette", only with stones, pieces of metal, solar energy and other phenomena that put humanity at great risk. Let us consider in more detail one of these positions - the threat of space debris accumulation.
Near-Earth research have not only positive but also very negative consequences. Since the first artificial satellite to orbit the systematic environmental changes started was launched into Earth orbit.The main problem is the accumulation of artificial space debris, the number of which is constantly multiplied.
There is an artificial space debris (broken spacecraft, satellites, rocket stages and other fragments) and natural (such as meteoroids). Meteoroids arise suddenly from outer space bowels quickly fly past the Earth and often burned in the lower atmosphere. In rare cases, fragments thereof (meteors) reach the surface of our planet. Man-space objects are usually launched from the earth into an orbit for a long time and there may be thousands or even millions of years (in the case of geostationary satellites). Destroy, they pose a constant threat to the active spacecraft and artificial satellites.Continuous accumulation of debris in space is still undervalued and is a huge threat to our planet.Credit: NASAAt Earth orbit of the Earth is concentrated the largest number of space debris. 95% of the objects in the image are the most space debris and no operational satellites
On 31 August 2015 the maximum number of man-made space objects that are in space, was 17 250. Of these, only 1362 space objects were active, while 15,888 were debris.
The active spacecraft in space, the majority belongs to the US (446), Russia (135) and China (132).Provision of space debris (inactive satellites, rocket stages, fragments, etc.) in the near-Earth space on August 31, 2015 is described in the table.
The most important risk is the cascading effect of space debris collisions, known as the "Kessler Syndrome": the body after the collision with the stationary orbits go, resulting in the likelihood of subsequent collisions increases dramatically. Today we are in a phase of a monstrous space pollution.According to some scientists, will soon cascade effect could spiral out of control.Photo: ArticlesbaseGraphical representation of a real threat to Earth because of the debris resulting from the orbiting satellites
Information and data on the location of the debris is very relevant for the planning of space missions.In addition, such data play an important role in national security. It is easy to imagine how the problem of increasing space debris may become a pretext for a large-scale military operations against the enemy's space capabilities. You can destroy the satellites of other countries, and no one can find out the cause of failure, as the satellite could at any time be faced with space debris. And if there were any data on the location of debris, such a situation could be monitored. In addition, the random destruction of the spacecraft, which plays an important role in the defense of a country, can cause potential conflict. In the absence of data backed up by studies such failure can be interpreted as a deliberate act of hostility one country against another.
URBOCOP as a possible way to solve the problem
Throughout its history, the people never fully controlled the threats that he has created.
In May last year at the Congress devoted to space exploration, in Canada, I invited countries to join together to create a defensive space station that can minimize both artificial and natural threats in space.
To solve this problem I URBOCOP platform model has been proposed, which would function as an unmanned space station that can monitor the Earth and the cosmos. The system would have a weapon to destroy both natural and man-made objects approaching the Earth, including ballistic missiles. to manage the platform completely independently.
I emphasized the fact that this is only a model of the potential invention, capable of one day save the Earth from the threat of space as well as by the military. Such as the Space Protection URBOCOP able to protect our planet from anything that might destroy it.Photo: Room, The Space JournalModel image monitoring platform and Defense URBOCOP in Earth orbit
In order to create an effective system of protection is necessary to ensure close international cooperation. Otherwise, even the most powerful, the rich, developed countries face legal barriers in the case of illegal actions.
Space resources should belong to the whole world, every country, every person. No matter how idealistic it sounds - everyone should have equal opportunities to defend their planet. "
