Almost every pet nowadays has a different pattern, or color to it. I have a liking to spots. I don't know why, but growing up I have always had a fettish for dalmatians. Then I realized how many other pets we have that are spotted! From rabbits, horses, cats and even rats! So out of entertainment for myself I have written a hub on, not just spotted pets, but spotted animals. I hope you enjoy!
Lets start with my favorite, the Dalmatian. When I think of spots this is what pops up in my head, but again, that maybe just my fettish. Dalmatians have short, satiny and fine hair. The base color is white, with well distinguished black or liver spots. Spots are very round, and most are about the shape of a dime. The puppies are born all white, and show as they get older.
Next lets go with some other dogs? The English setter somewhat reminds me of a long hair dalmatian, even though they are in completely different groups. They only come in spots, with black or liver. They are used as hunting dogs, and even though their coat is very flashy and well out there, they still do great at hunting. They are very hard dogs to maintain their coat, it must be brushed daily. English Setters maybe a descendent from the Dalmatian, at least their coat some what shows a connection. English Setters are part of the sporting group, they maily hunt ducks and quails, but they sometimes will hunt other animals, depends on their training and owners interests.
The Great Dane could also be known as a spotted dog. They dog come in different patterns and colors, but one of them is spotted with black and white. The Great dane comes in full solid colors, and merle. They do come with liver spots, like the dalmatian. I think there is a possible reason to believe that they are somewhat descended from one or another. Which one came first? I have no clue, but I believe the Great Dane did. I don't think the English Setter and the Great Dane have any connection, they have different coat textures and sizes.
Not a lot of Domestic cats actually have spots in their breed. The Ocicat is one of the breeds that have a wild look to it but is just selective breeding though domestic cats. It is legal in all states dispite its look. They have beautiful hair they keep healthy and clean. The have spots all over their body, with some exeptions of the tail. They tail may sometimes turn striped. A well bred Ocicat will have all spots and no stripes anywhere on its body.
The Bahraini Spotted Cat is from a small island off the coast of Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Gulf. They have a very distinctive look about them. They are slender and elegant street smart spotted tabby cats. Their very can adapt to almost any climate. They come in bark brown, bronze, cinnamon, lilac, ginger, sliver etc. They can come in solid colors too.
The cheetah has spots so they can lay down in the savannah grass and not be seen by their prey. Not only do they have their speed, they have camoflouge wear too. The cheetahs beautiful spots are now popluar for pures, clothes and accessories. Most Domestic cats do not have spots, neither does a lot of Big Cats. Beside the Cheetah their is only a couple more of cats with spots which include the jaguar, bobcat, the little spotted cat, bengal, mojave, egyptian mau and many more.
The Appaloosa is my favorite horse, yes, because of the spots. This is the most obvious spotted horse their is. They are bred to stand out. They can also come with a dark body, and spotted loins or hind quarters. No two Appaloosas are the same, they all have different patterns and colors. They can be used for almost anything. Western Riding, Cutting, Roping, Dressage, Jumping and Carriage Guiding are just some of the Appaloosas job. Their most important one, is just looking good.
The Paint has larger spots then the Appaloosa, they could even be called blotchy spots. They spots are always rounded. They only come in three main colors Tobiano, Overo and Tovero, but within Overo their is many different patterns. They are called the paint because it looks as if someone took white paint and splatted it on the horse. They are used for many different things and are a very popular horse.
The North American Spotted Draft horse has spots similar to the Paint. They have blotchy spots. They are a fairly new breed but their name describes them. They only come in white and a dark color, refering to dark brown, or black.
The Standard Rex Rabbit is a Domestic Breeding Selection made from experience breeders. This breed does not have any wild descendents. The have black ears with perfect round spots on their sides and stomach. Some even have spots on their tail and feet! These Rabbits are kindhearted, and great for kids. They come in different colors, and many are solid. They sometimes o have different colored spots, like liver or tan.
The English Spot is a descendent from wild rabbits. People did not selective breed these rabbits. They have a defined stripe going down their back and then have roundish spots all over their body. This rabbits did come from England as their name indicates. Like the Standard Rex Rabbit and the Checkered Giant Rabbit it has all black ears.
The Checkered Giant is the first wild rabbit that was spotted ever to be recorded. The English Spot is a descended of the Checkered Giant. The Checkered Giant also has a black stripe going down its back, that separates from the spots. The spots are well distingushed and very round. the English Spot got the black ears from the checkered giant but it can not be proven that they were passed down to the Standard Rex Giant.
The Leopard Shark is the only spotted shark there is. Found along the coast of North America, the Pacific. They swim in schools and are very easy to identify. Their name gives them away. They have a long stout body, with a short rounded snout. The eyes are large and oval. The strongly curved month lays perfectly on the tip of under his snout. They have never been reported to bit a human, but they have been on the conservations list because they were overfished and used as aquarium pets.
The Green Spotted Puffer Fish has a rounded body shape. The face is very cute. They have a weird, but cute personality for a fish. They will get exicted when they see the owner coming. almost as they are greeting them. They are freshwater fish, that enjoy living. They can be very aggressive with other fish and will devour and smaller fish, or anything living that is smaller.
The Spotted Dolphin are hard to describe because their size and coloring can range from where they come from. newborn calves are dark gray with white bellies and no spots. The color changes to two- tone sharply divided, dark on top, light on belly and no spots. Adolescent phrase when dark spots begin to appear on the lower part of the body. Then at full grown stages they have full colored spots.
The Western Spotted Froglives in shrubland, forests, rivers, marshes, arable land, pastureland, open excavations, canals and ditches. No one really knows where the spots cam from or why they have them. They are very uncommon and are very threatened by habitat loss.
The spotted newt is very common. They are a apart of the Salamandar group. Their skin can put out a poison through the spots if it feels threaten. They can live 12 to 15 years! They only get about 5 inches long. They can be an aquarium pet, but do not live as long in the tank. They are also known as the red eft.
The spotted salamander has up to 50 round yellow or orange spots. They can be neatly arranged or disembled. They can lay 200-300 eggs in submerged sticks. They live in mixed woodlands with slow moving streams, swamps, or vernal and pools.
Turtles arent normally spotted. This is a small, but cute little turtle. They can be kepy captive, but need to stay in a 55 gallon tank. Maybe bigger. They come on land, and go in water. This is a good turtle for people who have never owned one before. They are low maintiance, and friendly. It is all in how the turtle is raised, some can be snappy.
The Spotted Python is a non-venomous snake. They are mostly used for pets. The adults get 100-140 cm long. They have blotches have ragged egdes. They can be found in Australia. They are mostly found in caves or rocky hillsides. They like to live in caves, they will sometimes feast on bats. They eat mice and small rodents.
Leopard Geckos are such beautiful creatures. They can be such fun pets, and very interesting. I owned two of these lizards, when I was younger. Lenny and Lexis. I did not plan to breed, actually I didn't even know what their sexes were. They were cool pets. I had to get rid of them because I could not handle them. I am allergic to Lizard Skin Oils. I did not know this until I got them. Another cool fact about them is when they are scared or feel threaten they will drop their tails off. So the prey with go for the tail, while he runs away. The tail grows back within weeks.
Many Pigs are pink, black or orange. What about a Black, Orange and Pink pig? Sounds cool right? this little guy is cute. I love pigs, mostly small ones. I have owned pigs before. Never spotted ones, but they are so cute.
Cows, not much to say about them. These are you average black and whie spotted cows. Dairy and meat cows. I love the spots.
This is an unusal spotted animal. This is Spotted Sheep, they usually come in black and white. There are sheep which are mixed between, they usually produce the same amount of wool and are sold for the same price.
The Spotted Hyena is a humerous creature. They are said to laugh, for their calls. I think Hyenas are very interesting characters. They have little black spots on ther rustic fur. They are scavengers, they search for already dead pray. They have a hard time trouble hunting on their own, unless the animal is sick and weak. Some say without the Lion they would not survive.
The Giraffe is a sweet character. Very peacful too other animals. They are quiet and very rarely aggressive. They have brown spots, they fade away at the end of their legs, and tail. They are tall lean animals.
The Spotted skunk is another unfimilar animal you don't see a lot. they are spotted but the spots are kind of stretched alittle. They only come in black and white. They are common in Florida. but function like a normal skunk.
