About Steve Harvey

Steve Harvey was born Broderick Stephen Harvey on January 17, 1957. He doesn't use his first name, but he has a son who does. He was named Broderick by his parents after actor Broderick Crawford of the series Highway Patrol that was popular on television when Steve was born.

Steve himself is no stranger to television, radio or to the comedy world because he is a well-known host, producer, radio personality, actor, comedian, and author.

He has a lot of things going on at the same time. He hosts and is the executive producer of most of the following shows:

  • The Steve Harvey Morning Show
  • Steve daytime talk show
  • Family Feud
  • Celebrity Family Feud
  • Little Big Shots
  • Little Big Shots: Forever Young
  • Steve Harvey's Funderdome.

His books include the following:

  • Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man that was made into a romantic comedy
  • Straight Talk, No Chaser: How to Find and Keep a Man
  • Think Like a Success, Act Like a Success
  • Jump: Take the Leap of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance

In the past, Harvey hosted Showtime at the Apollo and the Miss Universe Pageant in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Additionally, he had starred in The Steve Harvey Show and has had small roles in other television shows. He was featured in The Original Kings of Comedy.

Harvey is well decorated with awards, honors, and other recognitions. He has five Daytime Emmy Awards and 14 NAACP Image Awards. Harvey receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013. The well-accomplished man has a street named after him in Cleveland, Ohio. He and his family lived on East 112th Street that was renamed Steve Harvey Way in 2015.

Harvey's Early Life

Harvey graduated from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1974. He often jokes about not graduating from college even though he attended Kent State University and West Virginia University where he became a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Before making it big on television and radio, Harvey held many jobs. He was a boxer, an insurance salesman, a carpet cleaner, an autoworker, and a mailman.

He was homeless and lived in his 1976 Ford Tempo for three years. He used an Igloo cooler to keep his fool cool. He kept himself clean by washing up in hotel bathrooms, gas stations and swimming pool showers. After three years, he received his big break to appear on Showtime at the Apollo as a standup comedian even though he had a stuttering problem.

Those struggling days are behind Steve Harvey. Today, he and his family have two luxurious houses. One is in Chicago where he hosts his daytime talk show. The other one is in Atlanta where Family Feud is taped.

Harvey's Net Worth

Even though Harvey has a major $25 million setback with the IRS in 2008 and financials woes with his second wife, he still has a net worth of $120 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Harvey's Wives

Steve Harvey has had his share of wives. He has been married three times, and all his wives' names start with the letter "M."

  • His first wife was Marcia Harvey. She and Steve have twin daughter, Brandi and Karli and a son Broderick.
  • Mary Shackelford was Steve's second wife. She and Steve had a son named Wynton.
  • Steve's current wife is Marjorie Bridges. They wed in 2007, but they do not have any children together. Marjorie has three of her own, but Steve raises them as his own. In all, there are seven children and four grandchildren in the blended family.

Steve Harvey has an impressive résumé with titles and accomplishments. However, there is one major fault a lot of people have against him, but it has not stood in the way of his success.

Communication Skills

Uses Profanity

Steve Harvey professes to be a Christian, and his faith is not challenged. However, he had no problem using a lot of profanity on all of his shows even those that involve children. On his television show Little Big Shots, a couple of kids questioned him about his foul mouth.

When gospel singer Shirley Caesar appeared on Little Big Shots: Forever Young, she cautioned him about his cursing. He remarked that if he stopped using profanity, his money would stop.

If every word of profanity was bleeped out of Harvey's shows, there wouldn't be much of the show left. That is just a hyperbole to explain how often he uses foul language.

Poor Grammar

Harvey has a very bad habit of using poor English. He must have been absent when his teacher was teaching such pronouns as they and their. He often uses those word incorrectly.

He says something like this:

"They went to they car to drive it to they house. When they got to they house, they went inside they house."

There are many other instances where Harvey has broken the King's English.

Harvey admits that he has a habit of mispronouncing names even after his staff writes names phonetically on cue cards.

As a fellow African American, I am so embarrassed for him. So much so, I decided to quit watching the show(Family Feud).! Unfortunately his verbal skills have shed a haunting stereotypical shadow... We have the right to expect better from him! Due to his status as a spokes person and entertainer. How is this acceptable? Maybe its to keep the stereotypical sentiment alive and well... just saying... How does this kind of ignorance prevail? People just don't come across that ignorant on purpose. Poor role model for our kids!

His grammar and pronunciations have changed drastically this season, he never used to speak like this, at least not to this extent. I used to love him, especially the show format when still in Chicago. :(

Terri Edwards, Well said! I don't watch him any longer because of his bad verbal skills. He claims that's the way he makes his money.

I am amazed that the network lets him get away with the way he communicates with the children on "Little Big Shots."

I think America is dumbing down by the day and acceptance of his bad verbal skills on TV is embarrassing and not a good role model to any young person. It's like he's saying it's okay to speak stupid. I really really can't stand it.
