Study Abroad in Australia: Scholarships and Grants

Updated on December 26, 2012

Most international students in Australia avail of scholarships and grants offered by the government, colleges and universities, non-government organizations, and even private funding agencies. If you are planning to study abroad in Australia through scholarships, here is a list of academic opportunities offered for international students:

Government Scholarships

The Government of Australia has high value for international education. Thus, it offers scholarships for students from its partner countries, which are developing countries from Africa, Asia Pacific, Caribbean, Latin America, and Middle East. The scholarships are offered under unified scholarship program supervised by the Department of Education, Science and Training in collaboration with the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).

Australian Development Scholarship (ADS)

Primarily, ADS is a long-term scholarship award managed by AusAID. Its main goal is to contribute to the long term development needs of partner nations of Australia in line with regional and bilateral cooperation. The scholarship is open for students from developing countries to study undergraduate and postgraduate studies at partner universities in Australia. The scholarship provides full tuition fees, air travel cost, establishment allowance, living expenses, and other related fees.

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA)

ALA fellowships aim to produce aspiring leaders in priority fields that could advance important regional policies and develop institutional capacity of Australia’s partner nations. This scholarship is not purely academic-driven. Instead it is designed to provide short term opportunities for researchers who want to study abroad in Australia.

Endeavour Scholarship Award (ESA)

ESA is the Australian Government’s frontline scholarship program that is based on academic merits and available for international students from Asia Pacific, Americas, Middle East, and Europe. The program is a part of Australia’s initiative to develop international education, and to provide valuable support for the country’s partner nations.
