Studying in Australia/ New Zealand for Indian Students,The Harsh Reality

Updated on April 23, 2012

Going for Degree Down Under

There is some discussion about Australia and New Zealand as a destination for studies for Indian students. I have been in the HR field for close to 15 years and interacted with students who have earned degrees from these nations down under. I have also visited these nations. Unfortunately I cannot recommend theses countries as a destination for degree or higher studies for Indian students.

Let us understand as to what is the aim of a student. If the aim is to get some education in Australia or News Zealand and migrate to these countries, than you cannot be faulted. I would say this is an excellent back door to gain entry into these countries. You can get a degree there and than after that look for some job there and finally settle down in Australia or New Zealand. But you will have to be ready for a racial backlash and some inconvenience, like a culture shock, but you have the chance of charting a fresh course.

But in case you wish to get your education and come back to India than these two nations will put you at a handicap. In that case you will be better off in trying for a course in Europe or the United states. Degrees from the universities down under do not carry the marquee value of some of the top Indian institutes like IAM’s and IIT’s. I have known umpteen students who studied in Australia and spent a small fortune not able to get commiserate jobs in India. Some became so disheartened that they tried to get back to Australia.

There are a many people who recommend studying in Australia because of the wonderful scenery and all around atmosphere. This is not to deny it, but the basic aim remains getting a marquee degree and furthering your career. I am afraid in the corporate world in India degrees from Australia and New Zealand come a poor third after the USA and top Indian institutes. A degree from a top Indian Institute may well land you a job in America!

This was very informative. I never realised there was such a disparity in the various graduate degrees.

Voted up, useful and interesting. Socially shared.
