Success is just a by-product of Excellence. Success comes before work only in dictionary.

Updated on January 20, 2013

Different people may have different definition for success. For some people, success is just achievement. For many people, success is not just achievement; it’s something more than that – it is achieving things other people will admire. Irrespective of the definition of success, success comes with excellence. I’m not talking about any accidentally success; I’m referring to real and consistent success.

Many people work towards success. However, the real successful people, don’t work toward success, they work towards excellence – these smart people know success, money, name, fame, publicity and everything else will automatically follow excellence.

I’m not going to list down the most successful people and what they are excellent at. As definition of ‘success’ is different from one person to another, the list of successful people will also be different from one’s perspective to another. However, one thing is for sure, all the successful people were and will be excellent at something and this excellence had led and will lead them to success.

Success can be an accident. But, excellence can never be an accident. Excellence has to be attained through hard work, dedication and discipline. The greatest commodity we all have is common is ‘Time’. Time wisely spent can determine the time frame for obtaining the excellence, which in turn will lead to success. So, the time management is also important.

Some people may say that the some of the successful people were just lucky. May be; one time success can be accidental or may be due to luck. But, if someone is consistently successful, then the success is not just by luck or by accident. That person would definitely be excellent in something – may be excellent in at least grabbing the right opportunity and making the best use of it.

Excellence is a pre-requisite for success, but, the excellence comes at a cost. Very few people might have been gifted with some excellent talents by birth, but, most of the people who were and are successful, made themselves excellent in something through lot of hard-work and sacrifices. As the Osage proverb goes, ‘If you want a place in the sun, you must leave the shade of the family tree’. One cannot have everything - certain things like comfort, laziness, etc. have to be sacrificed to attain greater good.

Work --> Excellence --> Success. Success comes before work only in dictionary.

First, Work. ‘No farmer ever plowed a field by turning it over in his mind’. Though planning is important, executing it is more important. Many may be good at planning, but all those who plan don’t execute, and eventually don’t obtain excellence or success. On the other hand, I’m not going to discuss about the other group of people who don’t plan, as failing to plan is planning to fail.

Second, Excellence. “Anything worth doing is worth doing right.” ― Hunter S. Thompson. Work towards excellence, period.

Third, Success. Success is just a by-product of excellence. So, definitely, Success will follow excellence.

Though everyone want to be successful, they should also realize that there are more important things (such as Character, Value) than mere success. So, don’t try to get mere success at the cost of these important principles at any cost. Success is never final, and failure is never fatal. With good principles, work towards excellence, success will definitely follow you.
