Sustainable life:Sustainable economy

Updated on March 1, 2013

Human mind is always in a quest to attain more and more. Unquenchable thirst for materialistic prosperity and happiness has started showing its evil effects on human society since the wake of industrialization and now in globalization era.

What is sufficient? There is no definition clear in human mind. What are our real needs? No…hardly a person can define his/her needs. Industrialization Mantra is, “produce more and more than the demand and create the demand for surplus so that capital is available to produce surplus.”

Not that everything that is produced has demand. Then it needs to be created. Creation of the demand for the products those are not the essential need of human being is an artificial process. It is a process that influences human society to feel need of the product, not providing any space to think whether they really are needed or not!

More demand- more production is a cycle that every capitalistic system undergoes. That creates demand for capital as well. Who are suppliers of the capital? Every individual that deposits his savings in the bank or buy’s equity. Banks or brokers are managers of your funds those are invested by them in the area of their like. This way if you look at any corporate they are run on your money. They run on your money to extract more of your money. Own capital of every capital house is meagre.

This is apart. Every moment you are lured to buy something. This is inevitable because corporate need to make profits. They need profits because they need to repay loans and dividends to their investors. They need money to create employment. Government encourages establishment of more and more new business houses. If not indigenous investment, foreign investments are sought.

The same thing happens with individuals. They too need more and more money to satiate their needs. For this they need better paid jobs. They need easy loans. They need to work extra hours.

This is how system works. But not that always this works in everyone’s satisfaction!

Sometimes it collapses under its own burden. We have seen this happening recently in the country like Greece and USA.

Why this?

Because we have failed to understand meaning of sustainable economy!

We have failed to analyse meaning of our own needs.

We cannot differentiate between real needs and virtual or imaginary needs.

We are not aware with the artificial needs we are burdening heavily natural resources.

We are not aware with many things those are available in market we can do without with. Still we want them because some aura of “specialness” is created about them!

But this specialness is temporal. Human mind next day will run after other things those would make him more special.

This is how our life and economy works today, keeping wheel turning without any direction.

But artificial economy is bound to shatter some or other day. It has happened several times in the history. Main reason, according to historians, behind collapse of Roman Empire was degraded economy. We have seen this happening with Soviet Russia, now USA…Greece…

To revive economy in modern times other artificial means are deployed. This doesn't make any economy sustainable. Temporary injecting of funds doesn't make any economy stronger. Main disease cannot be cured with such policies.

It is question of our attitude how address the problem? Whether we can redefine life style? Whether we can be freed from the clutches of our never ending greed? Can we ever find time to look into ourselves and the world differently where not only we but future generations too will have to live free of curse that our generations have created?

Let us redefine life and our economy to make it sustainable…!

Yes. But to redefine life, we must become aware of ourselves, and how we are defining it - based in fear and greed - already.

A good analysis of human behavior in terms of greed.
