Ten golden traits of a great teacher

Updated on August 15, 2012

Teaching is the noblest profession of this world. People starve to become teacher but there are very few who possess the true traits of a great teacher. In this hub, I am discussing those traits of a successful great teacher. In my life, I had many encounters with some great teachers and who played a great role in many transformations of my life. The role of my teachers in my life is well described in this article and I am sure you will love to read as this article is written in ambience- The teachers who influenced my life.

On the basis of the traits of those great teachers, I have analysed and summarised the traits of a great teacher. If you are also a part of such a noble profession then I highly recommend you to go through this article just to have an assessment of your teaching ability (although if you are already a great teacher then there is no need to judge as your ability is far above my hub).

Now, let me come to the main theme of the article and let us each and every aspect of all the indispensable traits of a great teacher. I am sure you will enjoy all of them and will provoke your thought for sure.

Knowledge is the greatest weapon of a great teacher

A great teacher is just like an ocean of knowledge who always ready to ponder his knowledge over the students. I also consider myself the luckiest person of this world that I have come across many such teachers who just made me speechless with their knowledge. Although I believe that knowledge is a continuous process but still I feel there comes a stage when you start feeling that you have something in you. This stage of having something in you is very important as it will impart you the desired confidence to become a great teacher.

Eminent personality is must for a great teacher

Here from eminent personality I don’t mean that you should be good looking but instead I mean that you have a kind of jolly personality with whom student should love to interact. I have heard hearing many times that a teacher should have a serious personality in the class but till date I don’t know the reason behind it. In fact, I have seen that the most loving and respected teachers are those who always maintain a light environment in the class. In my personal view, becoming serious or strict can sometimes act as a biggest barrier in the learning of students.

So, I advise all the teachers just to unveil the secrets of a great personality and enjoy the reputation of a great teacher.

Creativity is the only trait which can put you in the list of great of teachers

Your way of teaching matters very mush along with your knowledge. If you can’t generate creative ideas in your teaching then you are ultimately leading your students to boredom. Ultimately, your students will start finding excuses to skip your classes. Remember, no matter how much knowledge you have, it is of no use if you can’t express it in creative style. This is the chief reason why can’t all resourceful people become successful teachers? There should be an ambience in the classroom and which can be attained only through creative writing.

For creativity, you can use modern teaching methods along with the traditional teaching to obtain an effective teaching and to obtain a reputation of a great teacher.

A great teacher holds the calmness of a deep sea

Teaching tests your patience at every step. In my assessment, great teachers always possess the trait of keeping their nerves calm any boiling situation. A calm teacher always sets an example in front of the students to react in odd situations.

There can be many situations in the classroom where a student may sleep or don’t pay attention to your lecture but instead of showing your anger to them if you will treat them with calmness then it can provide you more long lasting results. Remember, degree of calmness is directly proportional to the effectiveness of your teaching ability.

Be inspirational and motivate your students towards the success

An ordinary teacher just thinks to deliver his lecture to the students but the great teachers have a unique trait of motivating their students towards the success. They play a similar role of father in the life of a student and motivate the student at every step of life.

A great teacher possesses the inspirational influence over the students and lead from the front by setting excellent examples in front of them. More you motivate your students better will be the chance that your students will love you. One more thing which I have noticed, motivating teachers are always remembered throughout the life by students.

Great teachers always remain eager to learn new things to keep their knowledge up to date

In the present scenario, there are lots of daily happening and it has become mandatory for the teachers that they should be aware of all the happenings so that they can impart the knowledge of new things to their students. To have knowledge is the basic trait of every teacher but it’s the updated knowledge which separates the great teacher from the ordinary one. This updated knowledge can be gained only if you will be eager to learn new things irrespective of your age.

A great teacher always loves to read books to keep him updated and know very well the art of selecting a good book for study.

Confidence in your abilities can help you in becoming a great teacher

Just imagine a situation, there is a teacher who is very resourceful but whenever he comes in the front of students his voice starts choking along with his trembling legs. Will you ever like to study from such under confident teacher? I know the answer of this question before asking you.

To teach your subject with full confidence is the prerequisite for a great teacher. If you are confident enough then you can even compensate your little knowledge of the subject also. Confidence doesn’t come in one night but it can be acquired with practice as we all know practice makes a man perfect.

Be patient as a teacher and you will get the rewards sooner or later

I know a teacher puts lot of hard work behind his teaching and I salute his hard work. But sometimes it does happen that despite of hard work, teacher doesn’t get the desired result from the students. There can be several factors in it. Instead of losing the temper in such situation, great teacher hold the key of patience and knows that one day he will open the lock of success with this key of patience. So, be patient and be ready to be in the list of great teachers one day.

Dedication towards the work is the rare trait found in the great teachers

Dedication is a single word which has lots importance in the life of a great teacher. A great teacher always love his profession so much that other things like status or money doesn’t play any significant role in front of their dedication. Here, I just want to quote two of my personal experience with two of the greatest teachers of my life.

While I was pursuing my master’s degree, once one of my classmates asked my chemistry teacher that sir didn’t you ever drink alcohol? The answer of the teacher was very simple but very thought provoking. He calmly replied that I have inhaled more alcohol than a normal person during my experiments in the laboratories then what is the need for me to drink more alcohol? Although, the answer was given in a jolly mood but it is still one of the most motivating replies of my life.

There is another example of dedication of my another respected teacher, the teacher about whom I am talking is around 75 years of age but still loves to teach students as teaching is his passion. I always have seen that man either taking lectures or studying the books in library.

A great teacher always form a bond of love with his students

Teacher is as respected as parents for a student. Great teacher also believes in this concept and treats his students like his own children. A great teacher feels happy in the happiness of his students and make his eyes wet in the sorrow of his students. I have come across through many such teachers in my life who treated me like their son and this is the chief reason why I consider them as great teachers of my life.

My article is just a small attempt to honour the greatness of such teachers who are remembered by the students throughout the life. After writing this article, my heart is filled with more respect for those great teachers of my life.

If you also have any trait to add in the above list which I missed then please feel free to write. I will be happy to gather the views of my readers. Also, if any teacher reading this article please do make a comment below, expressing his/her views on the same.

Very nice hub. You have touched on the greatest qualities in a good teacher. I do believe that a student most of the time is as good as the teacher...of course it is one of the hardest but rewarding careers in the world. Cheers to all the teachers!
