Thoughts on The Bible and Being a Physician

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” When people are dying you are able to see the emotions that most people do not have the opportunity to see with the exception of loved ones and medical professionals, and in most cases these emotions revolve around fear. Fear, because people are afraid of dying. The reason that they are afraid of dying is because they do not know what is going to happen to them after their soul’s leaves their body. Medical professionals see this first hand every single day, day in and day out, a large amount do not understand what happens after death themselves, but there is a good amount of Physicians today that are Christians, and these doctors know that after death only comes heaven or hell. My future profession is to become a medical doctor.

When you have the ability to treat people in such ways as Physicians do, you see people that are hurt physically all the time, but you also have the ability to help and treat them mentally. Very few professions allow more opportunity to share the gospel with people than the medical profession. People only go to the Doctor’s office when something bad is happening to them; this presents itself with the amazing opportunity to share the story of the Great Physician himself with these patients. Many sick patients that come in are tired, overworked, depressed, and they feel like they do not have any reason to live. Most unsaved Doctors would just prescribe anti-depressants to numb the pain. However, that is just covering up a major problem. Saved and God fearing Doctors have the cure-all for absolutely every single thing that these patients might be going through. Christian Doctors know that their responsibility is not just physical healing, but also for their mental well-being as well.

When people come to see a Doctor they are at their most vulnerable. If Jesus Christ is the Great Physician then you would think that more Christian Doctors would be sharing their faith with their patients, but sadly this is not so. There are so many Christian Doctors who feel so afraid to share scriptures and ask to pray with their patients, because they feel that if they do this their patients will treat them differently. But in reality, so many people are searching for the answer to life. They say that there must be more to life than just living, working, and then dying.

That is why I want to become a Physician, because I will be able to share the love of Jesus Christ with people when they need it the most. When their bodies are broken and there is no one else that they feel that they can turn to, I have the opportunity to point them to God. Just as Psalms 103:3 says that God cleanses all of our sins and heals all of our diseases. As a Doctor, I only have so much that I can give to people, but God’s love is never ending, and his grace never ceases. He is the creator of our bodies, so naturally He knows exactly what our bodies need. God has the ability to do miracles medically just as in anything else. Jesus Christ will always be everything to me, and I will allow him to work through me because He is the perfect example of what a real Physician should be. We all have the choice to pick life or destruction; we only need to make the right choice.
