The Beginning

Elon Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa in June of 1971. Musk started showing promise as a child when he was self-taught computer programming. At the age of 12, Elon Reeve Musk sold a video game made for BASIC that he named "Blastar". Musk attained to Bachelor of Science degrees at the University of Pennsylvania. A small stint at Stanford University ended quickly when Musk decided to become an internet guru and entrepreneur in many fields. It was a great decision because this guy has never looked back and he only looks forward. I admire the guy for his ideas and his tireless work ethic, which begs the question, When does this dude sleep? He owns so many companies and he has impressive ideas that he works hard at making real concepts. One way or another, anything this guy is apart of turns to gold.... not gold but platinum. An amazing and talented guy with smarts and an undeniable work ethic who is an inspiration because of the ladder.

Zip2

Elon brought his brother in and they formed an internet software business in 1995 they named Zip2. It was a company that made an online city search guide for newspapers. This company couldn't last forever since newspapers are becoming less important now than ever. Elon Musk had the foresight to enter the internet boom in the early 90's and it was smart as can be because it paid off. Literally, as Musk got 22 million from the sale of Zip2. A great sale considering the company finally flopped but Musk made out like a bandit and went on the bigger and better things. At the time, however, it was a smart investment and, as is his forte, a brilliant idea come to life. Having the forward thinking to have such thoughts about the newspaper and the entertainment in the city needing assistance was just the tip of the iceberg for this man of many, many traits.

PayPal (X.com)

After selling Zip2, Musk used $10 million to invest and he became co-founder of X.com in 1999, which eventually changed its name to PayPal. This company was an e-mail payment company that eventually became the virtual online bank we use today. Musk sold the company to ebay, receiving $165 million from the big sale. This was the big break that Elon Musk needed so that he could have capital to be taken seriously and release his true potential. This was one smart idea and it is still the standard and main way people pay for items online. Personally, I use PayPal to pay for online shopping and when I sell items on ebay, the person pays using PayPal.

SpaceX

Elon Musk started his most ambitious project to date with the 2002 launch of SpaceX. This company makes and uses spacecraft and is used by NASA. Ultimately, SpaceX hopes to reach Mars and eventually, have the human race begin to build colonies. His vision is beginning to actually make sense and he is making things happen. The company has great income because of a contract with NASA and as of 2017, two millionaires have paid SpaceX cash so they can be carried around the moon and back. SpaceX is own the move with huge goals for the future of space exploration and multi-planet travel, too! Of all the companies that Elon Musk is involved in, my personal favorite and the one I believe is the most important for our continued way of life is SpaceX.

Tesla was founded in 2003 and it develops high end electric cars. Tesla also has self driving cars and the company has top notch technology. The sports cars are fast and beautiful and the best part is that they use zero fuel. This company is growing really fast and rising in popularity planet wide. Tesla is all about being more advanced than any other vehicle and they are on their way to accomplishing this and if sales continue to soar the company may soon become mainstream.

SolarCity

SolarCity was founded in 2006 and it makes solar power systems for businesses as well as households. Bought by Musk to incorporate with his automotive company. I have heard he plans on making roofing homes with solar powered roofing is a priority as well. Obviously, Musk plans to eliminate autos with gas which is fine by me without a doubt. Solar powered cars can save on gas which saves the consumer dollars and helps save the planet. Also, as far as homes go, solar powered roofs can help lower power bills by 50% or more which most families including me could sorely use to help our bank account.

High Speed Traveling

Hyperloop

Elon Musk told the world about his supersonic speed travel machine he called "Hyperloop" in 2013 and he has tunnels being built on SpaceX grounds in order to fulfill his commitment to making Hyperloop a reality. Hyperloop basically intends to shuttle people at supersonic speeds from state to state or country to country in mere minutes without the shuttles occupants never feeling the speed. The idea is great. Just imagine traveling from Florida to Japan in 18 minutes. What a concept! Somehow, a bubble like tube will surround us and similar to an airplane, we should not feel the movement much.

OpenAI

Elon Musk started a company he calls OpenAI in 2015 and it focuses on artificial intelligence and ways to keep it safe and useful for all on earth and beyond. This research company looks to invent, innovate, improve and monitor Artificial Intelligence as it progresses at a rapid pace.An important company in my view because many smart minds including Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates fear A,I. could get out of control without proper monitoring and further study.

He definitely is one of the people out there I most admire. He has ideas but more importantly he takes chances and goes after it.

Leslie, I enjoyed your hub about Elon Musk. It was a very informative article. I love the Hyperloop concept. Some scientist flirting with time travel concepts feel the Hyperloop concept is a key to achieving actual time travel experiences. It certainly will reduce the time it takes to get from one place to another. I didn't know he founded pay pal. I've heard fascinating plans of Space X.
