The students will call you their favorite teacher

Updated on January 28, 2015

Not every child enjoys going to school to learn, and there are many different excuses they will give to get out of it. The homework is too much, the classes are too short or too long, or the teachers are mean and unfair. It's confusing to get to classes, or there is too much to learn in a day. While you might not be able to do something about every complaint, and you will not always be able to please every student every time, there is one thing you can change. You can be the teacher that stands out in a child's mind. More than that, you can be the one teacher in the whole school that the students not only connect with, but look up to, admire and want to learn from. You could end up being everyone’s favorite teacher.

While teaching is not a popularity contest, there is some truth to students learning better from a teacher that they like versus one they do not. A teacher is not liked because they are firm on their rules or grade too high in the class or give too much homework. And while there are many other reasons as well, not only do you have to factor those in but you need to get your students to learn all the requirements for the class in the short amount of time you have with them. This means you will need to come up with steps that will help you not only achieve your goal but get the kids to like you in the process.

Appreciate your students

Every student requires a little encouragement now and then. It not only makes them feel good about themselves but it makes them want to continue to try since you are looking out for them. School is not easy for everyone, and sometimes students have a learning difficulty that holds them back from the rest of the class. Those students might need a little extra nudge now and then without making them feel singled out. And at times taking the time to talk to that student after class might be all the encouragement they need. But encouragement comes in many forms from verbal to goals. And small rewards along the way can help them meet those larger goals later on. A simple award to the student or students can go a long way towards their self-esteem as well as boost confidence in their own abilities to get the work done and understand it.

One of the ways to encourage your students is to reward them on their achievements. While some of those achievements might seem small, every step a child takes in the right direction is going to be big for them. And the more often you acknowledge them the better their sense of accomplishment and confidence in their skills will grow. You can help your students grow by using an award certificate template which will allow you to print your own award certificates anytime you want to give them out. You can keep it simple and basic allowing you to keep several copies printed at all times or you can edit them and make changes such as text, font and color. This also allows you to personalize them for each student you give them to, or tailor them to the accomplishment you are rewarding them for.

Schedule Their Assignments

Every teacher has different methods for teaching their students, and of course there are different topics on the curriculum that has to be taught. How you choose to teach those topics will make a difference as to whether or not your students will remember it. As school gets harder and harder through the years, teaching some simple basic routines that will help your students be able to keep track of their work will benefit them with all of their school work. You can help them by teaching them how to use and make a list of their assignments, their tasks or their homework in general. By writing down what they need to know on a list it helps them to retain the memory and learn how to prioritize their tasks. With the use of a to do list template you can easily create and print a list for your students to use in class. The list template is easy to use and only takes a few minutes to be ready. Once you have it in your computer you can make any changes you need to, in order to individualize per student or for your class in general. You can even use the project to do list template as an easy homework assignment for the students so they learn how to write one on their own once they have learned how to use the one you give them. This list is tailored towards the needs of the students but should be modified by you so it not only works for the class but for you as well.

Be a Cool and Flexible Teacher

Students like to express themselves, sometimes in unique ways. This goes from the way that they dress, to the way that they learn. One student might turn in a perfectly typed essay while another might think the topic is not something they are interested in and refuse to put any effort into it. Those students can be tough, yet they are the ones that you want to convince and get through to as it will make the most difference in their lives. Perhaps a little topic change for them, or an explanation from them as their own work on why they feel the topic they are working on is not for them. A little flexibility in your teaching skills will go a long way towards winning over your students. And since most of what the students do is talk, word will get around on how cool a teacher you are to have.

Students Love Technology

Using current technology in class allows the students the freedom to express themselves a little more and allows you to relate to them on their own level. It can work as a multiple learning tool as well that allows you to incorporate the use of a list template into the online work, or computer work. There are even tablets that will allow you use of several downloads that can help the studies of those students. You can even assign the task of the students downloading the list template as you have made it, and allow them to use it on their own. This way they can take on the skills that you have taught them and they will carry them on to several of their other classes or years to come.

Having said all that, remember for a teacher school is not about popularity as it might be with the students. Popularity is gained for teachers automatically by how you teach and how well your students react to your teaching methods. By using some of technological methods it can increase the productivity and learning ability of all of your students allowing you to teach your subjects with little problems. Taking those tests in your class will become a breeze as the students will have an easier time in remembering the answers by using the tools that you have implemented for them. And if they happen to get a good score on that test there might be a little reward in it for them.

I never met a student I didn't like. Now I can't say they weren't challenges, but that's what helped me to grow as an instructor. Enjoyed my visit on this topic. Thanks for including the video.
