Top 10 IAS coaching institutes in India. How to select the best IAS coaching institute?

Civil services (IAS/IPS) is one of the most prestigious and powerful jobs in India. Getting into civil services is dream for lakhs of youth in India. The examination is conducted by the UPSC (Union public service commission) each year and the examination is one of the toughest in the world. Dedicated hard work is required to crack IAS and quality coaching is essential for aspirants. Though many institutes claim to be the best in coaching, only a handful provide high quality teaching and produce toppers each year consistently. Coaching fee for IAS exam can cost anywhere between Rs 75,000 to Rs 1,50,000 for the entire duration of the course covering the three stages of Prelims, Mains and Interview. In this hub, I would like to guide you on how to choose the best IAS coaching institute. But its upto you to decide which one is the best.

Location is not important: Many people have a view that the best coaching institutes are located in Delhi. This is a myth. It’s true that some of the best professors and mentors are based in Delhi. Similarly, Delhi-based institutes specialize in Optional subjects. Students who studied optional subjects in Delhi obtain more marks than others. However, good institutes are also present in other metros such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad etc

Don’t go by tall advertising claims: Generally coaching institutes will claim that they produce more than 10 toppers in a year. But the fact is that a topper might have availed coaching in 2 or 3 different institutes for various purposes. However, all institutes will claim him as their spoils.

Meet the Toppers: Meet people who have studied in the institute and cracked the exam. You can obtain valuable information from them regarding the quality of the institute. Generally, successful candidates will give lectures and and share their experience at the institutes where they studied. You can attend such lectures

Teacher is more important: Teacher is more important, not the institute. Generally popular institutes may not have good faculty for certain subjects. However, smaller institutes may have good faculty members.

Don’t economize on Fees: Some institutes charge very low fees to attract students. There are even free coaching centers run by NGOs and colleges. But the quality of coaching will be poor. This trend happens everywhere in India. If you take Chennai for example, Anna nagar is a hub for IAS institutes. Here, all institutes fix competitive fee structures to attract students. If you find that a particular institute is good, then it’s worth spending a few more thousands.

Attend Trial classes: Most institutes will conduct free trial classes. You could attend them to gauge the level of teaching. Generally, attending trial classes is must for Optional subjects like Political science, Sociology, Public administration etc. Optional subjects are crucial and decide the fate of your final ranking

Model tests: If you wish to check the quality of an institute, check out the model test papers of that particular institute. If the model papers are of UPSC level quality, then it’s good to choose such an institute. Often, institutes prepare model test papers by plagiarising other institutes' materials. Dont choose such sub-standard institutes.

Online Training/smart classes: Some institutes offer smart classes for subjects like Geography using interactive IT tools, which will enable students to grasp the concepts easily. Also, quality training is provided for students residing in other states through online mode. For ex, a student in Raipur could get trained from any institute in Delhi. You could check out such facilities. Personalised coaching is also offered by some institutes.

Flexible modules: For people who require coaching in selective subjects out of the overall syllabus, you could select tailor-made module programmes. For example, if you are already strong in History and economy in General studies, you could select the modules excluding the above two subjects. You can pay for the particular modules and leave the rest.
