Total Eclipse of the Moon: My Muse
Supermoon and the Total Eclipse of the Moon
Sometimes something amazing happens. It makes you stop and think about the world, how it works and where we really are in the Universe.
Everyday we rush around, only thinking of our jobs, people and of course our families.
Our days get caught up in such mundane thoughts and emotions that when we look back on it, we often sit and think 'What on earth did I do today?'
Even when we gaze at the moon and stars we tend to see them as two dimensional cutouts. Not what they really are, amazing Planets and Star systems 'Out There' in Space.
And the strangest thing of all.
We forget that we are floating in that deep Space on a ball that is being held up or down whichever way you look at it, by gravity.
So, at 3 am Monday morning 27/09/2015 I stopped and looked, and here is what I saw and thought.
Bear with me on my mental muse of this momentous occasion!
I peeped out of the curtains at 1.30 am. There was the Moon hanging like a giant grapefruit in the sky.
Did you know that the Moon is a quarter of the size of earth? It is around 238,000 miles away from Earth. But on the night of the Super moon it came as close as 220,000 miles. And boy was it worth it!
At around 1.10 am it started the Eclipse, but I fell asleep. I knew the best time was around 3 am.
At 3 am I woke up, shot up in bed and dived over to the window. I didn't need to really as I could see the Moon from my bed. But I wanted to see it in its full glory.
I flung open the window and looked up.
Moon Moon beautiful Moon,
Fairer by far than any Star,
Let it so be,
Bring good health and love
To me and my Family,

Oh Blood Red Moon you are so Super.
The air was still, no sound touched my ears as I strained to hear.
Even the wind was holding its breath as the Moon, hidden and dark
glowed like a molten ball of fire.
The air was still, no sound of birds or animals,
It seemed that the glory of the night sky was too much for the earth,
Which shrank from its majesty. I found myself
Holding my breath as I looked up.
The Moon seemed to hang by a thread, and then fall as though it had forgotten gravity.
With darkness the flat circular moon became a giant ball falling from the sky.
I took a step back and looked again. Then I saw it.
The truth of the Universe.
Our Earth is just a spinning ball surrounded by other spinning balls.
And at night we can literally reach up and touch the Heavens. (well nearly)
The blue that covers our day like a comforting blanket,
Is stripped away at night
Leaving us bare and shivering in the majesty of the Planets.
Its only when something happens like a Total Eclipse that we
can truly see the wonder of our Galaxy, Universe and Life.
I climbed back into bed and lay on my side
Just looking out the window at the dark glowing ball of the Moon.
Just me, the window, and the night sky.
I felt as though I was floating in Space.
Which of course, I was.
I felt something when I looked at the super moon. It was a mix of science and awe. With a sprinkling of magic thrown in.
And in that moment I knew how our ancestors felt when they looked at the wonders in the heavens.
However much science explains everything it can never take away the feeling of 'Something More' that's out there.
We are Ants among Giants.
Simple as that.
What did you think when you saw the Eclipse?
