Total Eclipse of the Moon: My Muse

Supermoon and the Total Eclipse of the Moon

Sometimes something amazing happens. It makes you stop and think about the world, how it works and where we really are in the Universe.

Everyday we rush around, only thinking of our jobs, people and of course our families.

Our days get caught up in such mundane thoughts and emotions that when we look back on it, we often sit and think 'What on earth did I do today?'

Even when we gaze at the moon and stars we tend to see them as two dimensional cutouts. Not what they really are, amazing Planets and Star systems 'Out There' in Space.

And the strangest thing of all.

We forget that we are floating in that deep Space on a ball that is being held up or down whichever way you look at it, by gravity.

So, at 3 am Monday morning 27/09/2015 I stopped and looked, and here is what I saw and thought.

Bear with me on my mental muse of this momentous occasion!

And there, in the sky hung a blood red moon.
And there, in the sky hung a blood red moon.

Grapefruit Moon!

I peeped out of the curtains at 1.30 am. There was the Moon hanging like a giant grapefruit in the sky.

Did you know that the Moon is a quarter of the size of earth? It is around 238,000 miles away from Earth. But on the night of the Super moon it came as close as 220,000 miles. And boy was it worth it!

At around 1.10 am it started the Eclipse, but I fell asleep. I knew the best time was around 3 am.

At 3 am I woke up, shot up in bed and dived over to the window. I didn't need to really as I could see the Moon from my bed. But I wanted to see it in its full glory.

I flung open the window and looked up.

Moon Moon beautiful Moon,

Fairer by far than any Star,

Moon Moon

Let it so be,

Bring good health and love

To me and my Family,

Blessed Be!

— Old Wiccan Spell Ritual
Staring at the blood red moon
Staring at the blood red moon

Silence.

Oh Blood Red Moon you are so Super.

The air was still, no sound touched my ears as I strained to hear.

Even the wind was holding its breath as the Moon, hidden and dark

glowed like a molten ball of fire.

The air was still, no sound of birds or animals,

It seemed that the glory of the night sky was too much for the earth,

Which shrank from its majesty. I found myself

Holding my breath as I looked up.

The Moon seemed to hang by a thread, and then fall as though it had forgotten gravity.

With darkness the flat circular moon became a giant ball falling from the sky.

I took a step back and looked again. Then I saw it.

The truth of the Universe.

Our Earth is just a spinning ball surrounded by other spinning balls.

And at night we can literally reach up and touch the Heavens. (well nearly)

The blue that covers our day like a comforting blanket,

Is stripped away at night

Leaving us bare and shivering in the majesty of the Planets.

Its only when something happens like a Total Eclipse that we

can truly see the wonder of our Galaxy, Universe and Life.

I climbed back into bed and lay on my side

Just looking out the window at the dark glowing ball of the Moon.

Just me, the window, and the night sky.

I felt as though I was floating in Space.

Which of course, I was.

And there in the sky hung a blood red moon.
And there in the sky hung a blood red moon.

Magical Moon.

I felt something when I looked at the super moon. It was a mix of science and awe. With a sprinkling of magic thrown in.

And in that moment I knew how our ancestors felt when they looked at the wonders in the heavens.

However much science explains everything it can never take away the feeling of 'Something More' that's out there.

We are Ants among Giants.

Simple as that.

What did you think when you saw the Eclipse?

No pictures of you climbing a tree to get the perfect picture? :) That's OK...your poetry was spot on! I missed the eclipse, I slept through it. I did get a glimpse of the moon at 5:10 am which was really cool!

Oh, what a delightful read! Love the images and the poem itself is superb! I didn't get a good view of the eclipse. It was too cloudy in my part of the world and everyone in the hood is complaining. :(

I missed it, even after reminding about 200 families from my daughter's Engineering high school about the best time to see it and sharing with them a location where they could go see it together with a local astronomer's club who had powerful telescopes to look at it closer. Through your poem, however, I felt the magic.

Beautiful. I often look up into the night sky and get lost in the infinity of it all. Makes me feel so very small (as you stated). Sometimes I wonder if there are people on other planets doing the same thing at the same time as me!

As a side note, I published my first novel on Amazon Kindle and was wondering if you ever got time, would you be interested in reading/reviewing it? It's not terribly long but I'm trying to get my name out there and need help. Promoting one's book is difficult business (as I'm sure you know!)

So evocative - lovely and well-crafted, as I have come to expect from you.

Gorgeous photos, too. I tried taking a shot of the huge, ghostly white harvest moon floating above our little town this morning - I thought it might be a nice moody addition to a Halloween Hub, - it looked pretty unimpressive on the camera, LOL.

I did see it but it wasn't as red as I expected, sort of a dull orange. However, it was still awe-inspiring and magical.

I thought about our ancestors, too; they must have set so much by the gods and the heavens because they had no scientific explanation. Standing watching that moon, I could understand why!

      Great hub and super poem!

Where I was, it was so heavily overcast that I couldn't even tell where the moon was. Eventually laterI caught a fleeting glimpse around midnight. By time but it was mostly out of eclipse. I wish I had been able to enjoy the whole show at the time. Ah well, with all the preservatives in food maybe I'll be around for the next one. I'm glad you got to witness a bit more magic than me!
