The magic of turmeric...

The Golden Cure - Turmeric

Turmeric is also known as curcumin and is usually used in northern Indian dishes. We put turmeric in almost all our dishes, it provides a beautiful coloring and is also known for its nutritional values. In our homes, we use turmeric widely for medicinal purposes from healing of wounds to treating any forms of internal disorders such as indigestion, throat infections, common colds, or liver ailments.

In this article, I wish to share the various usages of turmeric and my family recipes passed down from generations. I am sharing my own experience in using turmeric as a preventive medicine and sometimes as antibiotic when my family members do get sick

I am a current day mom and I do end up questioning the effectiveness of this traditional or natural recipe. Being educated, I am more exposed to western medicines and the habit of seeking the advice of a qualified Doctor. So each time, my child use to be ill, I will trust the medication prescribed by the Pediatric Specialist. My son like many other children today, do suffer from common allergies such as nuts and dust mite. Whilst with nuts and food based allergy, I'd take extra caution in ensuring that he does not consume them, with dust mites, I am always fighting a losing battle. He frequently gets flu, eczema and when the flu is not treated in time, it will progress into wheezing and I dread it when I have to start resorting to steroid based drugs. And a number of years went by and I kept facing the same issues with my little boy. Flu, eczema, cough and then wheezing, stomach discomfort, tonsils and the list goes on. When his schooling year began, it became worst and it was rather tiring and frustrating experience to see my child taking some form of steroids or other from this young age.

But there came a point when I got really tired of all the medicines and frequent trips to clinics and hospital. I went to see an Ayurvedic Dr to share my frustration and seek his advice on a more natural approach to help with my son's health issues.

He then advised me to try out turmeric as it helps with curbing inflammation caused by his allergies. He taught to doses to take and the method. I tried it and it really helped my little one and it has been 3 years now. I have seen much improvement and I thought I must share this with all the mom out there dealing with young children. I just hate seeing young kids relying so much on steroid-based medicines and frequent antibiotics. We can all help curb inflammations if we learn how to use natural remedies effectively. It is good to keep turmeric handy at home. You can find variety of options these days in the pharmacy, but the best would be to make it yourself at home. It is super easy.

My Recipe of How to consume Turmeric

  1. For Preventive Measure: 1. Take an inch long turmeric. 2. Peel and Clean it. (make sure you put on your gloves. The colour is so strong it will stay on your fingers and nails). 3. Put it in a one-litre jar of water and mix. (make sure it's a glass jar) 4. Drink it throughout the day. This can be taken on daily basis. This works to deal with allergies and keep them at bay.
  2. For tonsils, viral cough, flu, stomach flu: 1. Take 3 inches long turmeric. 2. Peel and Clean it. 3. Crush it really fine with a pestle and mortar. 4. Squeeze out the juice into a soup spoon. 5. Add some honey and take it with lukewarm water. Do this 2 times a day for 5 days. This is strong and should not be taken too long. For toddlers, preferably give for 3 days and if ok, to stop.
