Types Of Sexuality In Humans

Updated on April 21, 2010

Sexuality in humans is a very complex thing as people are only aware of the four main ones but not the other ones that I am going to explain to you all and bring to light.

The groups are as follows

  • Heterosexual
  • Homosexual
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Polysexual
  • Pansexual
  • Transexualism

Each one in itself is different to the other as you will all know, you will see that there are seven types in total however many of us only know of the four, such as Heterosexuality, Homosexuality, Bisexuality, and Transexuality.

I shall define each one to you below.

The Seven Types Of Sexuality

Heterosexuality-  Is the sexual attraction between members of the opposite sexes  such as man attracts to woman and woman attracts to man sexually.

Homosexuality- is the sexual attraction between members of the same sexes such as man to man and woman to woman.sexually.

Bisexuality- Is the sexual attraction to both the opposite and same sexes such as man to man and man to woman, woman to woman and woman to man.

Asexuality- Is also known as nonsexuality which is the lack of sexual attraction and sexual interest towards others.

Polysexuality-  Is the sexual attraction to more than one gender but do not wish to be known as bisexual as it implies that there are only two binary sexes, do not confuse this with pansexuality (Pan meaning All) and (Poly meaning many).

Pansexuality- Is the sexual attraction towards people regardless of gender also known as omnisexuality, some pansexuals refer to themselves as gender blind as to them gender is  insignificant in determining whether they will be sexually attracted to others.

Transexualism - Is when a person identifies themselves with a physical sex that is different to their own biological one, A medical diagnosis can be made if a person experiences discomfort as a result of a desire to be a member of the opposite sex. for example a person may be born male, and is uncomfortable with their gender as a male  and changes to a female, or a female may change to a male. It is a long process that they will go through and an expensive one too.

I hope that my explanations have helped you to understand the seven different sexualities of the human, however if you are not sure on some, internet sites such as have more in depth definitions to each of the types mentioned.

Pans and Poly sexuality are really bi or trans sexuality. Some people just like to act like they do not fit into a category. But everyone does in this case.

Transsexual is an outdated term. Transgender is now used. Also, there aren't only seven sexualities, there are millions. Sexuality is fluid, falls on a spectrum, and can change throughout a person's lifetime. Personally, I'm biromantic--I experience romantic attraction to both sexes and physical attraction to only women or to males I have strong feelings for (demisexual). Very few people identify completely with a single sexual orientation. It has been argued that it is impossible to be completely homosexual or heterosexual. If more people would stray from black and white thinking about homosexuality, it would likely significantly decrease gay hate, because more people would recognize that sexuality is fluid, that discriminating against one group is discriminating against themselves because it's impossible to draw a line between gay and straight.

what do you call a type of sexuality that is an attraction to physical beauty? coz i've learned that SAPIOSEXUALITY has something to do with being attracted to intelligence, wit, great choice of words, etc. now. i'm wondering if there's a term coined for sexuality of being attracted to physical beauty (face, body, and so on)...thanks!

Pansexuality doesn't refer only to sex between two or more humans. For this please read The Philosophy of Pansexuakity on the underlying links. Thank you very much.

For the new global vision on Pansexuality see: or  go to World's greatest site on Human Sexology , click on LINKS and then on SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

      Thank you.

Out of all of these, I had not heard of polysexual yet, but it makes sense.

Oh, and I would tend to agree with anon above (minus the extra rudeish comments), transsexualism is not a sexual orientation AT ALL and doesn't belong on this list.

Transsexualism/transgenderism is only very indirectly related to sexuality, and doesn't really reflect on a person's preferences. It's a gender-identity issue, not a sexual one, and has nothing to do with who you like in bed. In fact, transsexual people can be straight, gay, bisexual, pansexual, etc. (Though most of them are probably straight.) It is common to associate transsexuals with gayness or alternate sexuality, but this is just born from common misconceptions.

Transexuality has nothing to do with who you're attracted to, dumbass. Transexuals can be straight, gay, bi, pan - whatever. Everything else in this article is great, but Transexuality is about gender, not sex; the term itself is a bit of a blind alley. That you've included it as a sexuality preference renders the entire article invalid.

Susana S, there are very slight, but noticable differences.

Bisexuals are attracted to both men and women. (There can be vairations such as a woman, normally liking a man, but finding certain women sexually attractive, or vice versa, etc.)

Polysexuals are the same as bisexuals, except attractions towards transgendered or hermaphrodites are there as well.

Pansexuals are also like bisexuals except they instead of liking men, and women seperately (and the idea of men more than women or whatever) , they don't see a difference between the two. They are sexually attracted to both sexes equally.

Hope this helps? :] I'm not quite sure but its as correct as I can think.

Well that's interesting Calpol:) I can identify with 3 of these types of sexuality - Bisexual, Pansexual and Polysexual. To be honest I can't really see the difference, but it would be interesting to talk to someone who did!
