Understanding the "passion" of Type 8 on the Enneagram

Updated on March 13, 2013

Passion of Type Eight

The Enneagram is a personality typology system. It can tell you a lot about your personality but because it is a very vast body of knowledge attempting to understand it in its entirety can literally take years. This HUB focuses only on what is called the “passion” of Type 8 – “The Boss”– on the Enneagram system. I am also writing HUBs about the passion for each of the nine Enneagram personality types. If you do online research, you won’t find much written about the “passion” of Enneagram Types. Sandra Maitri’s book about the Virtues and Passions is overly technical, not an easy to understand book, and not helpful.

The “passion” of Type Eight is called “Lust.” This does not mean sexual lust only. The “passion” is a term used in the language of the Enneagram to describe a built-in insecurity that each personality type has. It is called a passion because it is as if the Eight has a passion for lust. This is so because the passion manifests often and is unstoppable. Seen from the perspective of heart, the Eight lusts by being forceful in everything they do. Eights might describe their own “lust” or passion as a strong propensity to be intense, dominate their environment, including people in it, to struggle and control. This can be seen in many ways. Eights will literally lust after food, sex, people, and be very physically oriented.

The Eight lust is a reaction to their somewhat subconscious worldview that somehow the world is against them and that they must fight to obtain fairness and just results. Thus they are fighters. They come across as very physical and perhaps loud. The passion of type Eight is to be forceful or lustful about everything they do. What triggers the passion of the Eight is a feeling that they need to control or dominate their environment or else they will not get their just result, or justice won’t be attained. The passion of Eight forces them to react in strong ways to their environments; regardless of whether they truly want to be lustful in a physical sense, they will do so because it is their passion, and therefore inevitable. The passion is a built-in insecurity which drags every Type in a certain direction. In the case of Eight, forcefulness or lust, manifest in mostly physical ways. Internally anger may be present, or a sense of retribution or revenge when challenged.

The Enneagram is a very powerful tool for self awareness. Coming into awareness that you have a passion is helpful because it leads to a greater level of self acceptance, self awareness, and enables you to not feel badly about your passion. In the case of the Eight, knowing that you have a compulsion to lust can help you to be more your authentic self. Knowing that it is because you and others who are also Eights have a built in need to be forceful and lustful leads you to a different conclusion that you and others share the same sort of built-in insecurity. I encourage you to check out any number of Enneagram websites if you’re interested in the material. Typing yourself can be a fun process. Try www.enneagramworldwide.com.
