We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can control our sail

We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust our sail!

>

While in a posh mall one day, this billboard caught my attention. How true, I muttered to myself. And now this thought just seem to have been planted in my head.

>

I started to think deeper into what this phrase is telling me. I thought, there has got to be something significant that I will learn from this, aside from adjusting our sail to where the wind’s direction is.

>

This morning, in our church service, our pastor ( who happens to be my husband) talked about knowing that “your miracle is in your mouth!” So I get it! He said that our tongue is like the rudder of the ship. No matter how small and insignificant this may seem to those who are uninformed, this rudder plays a major part while cruising. This rudder actually determines the direction of the vessel. It gets the vessel to where it wants to go. Direction setting! And then I realized, this seems to be the same thing as adjusting our sail with the wind. We actually have control over our lives!

>

Clearly, these are the things that has become clear to me now as I continue to ponder on these thoughts:

>
  • Direction setting! In life, we have to have directions. We cannot allow life to just swing us into different directions. There has got to be a goal, and before we can even get to that goal, we have got to have the right directions to get there!
  • We have control in our lives! We can adjust our sails! We can change the direction of the rudder! Whatever we are today, whatever we have become is a product of our choices. Difficult and challenging circumstances may come in our lives, but we can control the outcome of these circumstances by choosing which path to take.
  • Freedom! Most people like freedom. I like freedom to a certain degree. Freedom is not about doing every possible act that you think will make you happy. Freedom is about being in control. Ironic, it may seem. But if you think about it once, twice, thrice…there is freedom in choosing what you would like to do and being accountable and responsible for the outcome!

>

I had the pleasure of sailing one time when we went for vacation in New Zealand. While the sail was not just about appreciating the water, the cool breeze and the beauty of the boat, the sail was teaching us about having control, setting directions, finding a goal and choosing to get there the safest way possible.

>

I never realized the beauty of sailing until today, because far beyond the deep blue sea, its playful waves and calming breeze, my life can be likened to that of sailing! I have a choice, I have control over my life and all I need is a goal and the right direction to fully enjoy what God has intended life to be…A sail!

I am not into boats, but I like the thoughts of your huib. I agree with your husband, "Your miracle is in your mouth!" The little rudder in our mouth is a powerful force for good or bad!Grace and Peace
