What It Means to be a Feminist
The True Definition:
When the word feminism comes to mind, most people are plagued by thoughts of misandry and/or "girl power." However, that is not exactly what being a feminist means. If you are a feminist, chances are you just want everyone to have equal rights. That doesn't particularly mean that you want women to rule the universe or to have higher wages than men; it specifically means someone advocates women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes. To simplify that complicated phrase for those of us who do not have PHD's in sociology, being a feminist truly means openly voicing that all men and women (regardless of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and identification) deserve equivalent treatment.
How to "Handle" a Feminist
First off, one does not handle a feminist. Everyone should be one in some aspect. Whether that is just believing men and women should be equal, or going out and protesting the obvious economic inequalities that burden our society.
If you come across a more liberal feminist, I suggest you listen to their opinions with an open mind. Nothing positive comes from closing off your thought process just because you don't share certain beliefs with another person. We, as human beings, are all entitled to our own opinions and beliefs. If we continue to constantly shut down all the opinions that don't correspond with our own, we will continue to be the most unhappy species in existence.
There is no purpose in hating or treating others differently just because they are different! The world will be a much easier and utopia-tic place to live if we all just mind ourselves and let others be who they choose to be. Regardless of your religious or political practices, human beings should just let others be who they are truly meant to be. Stop forcing everyone else to believe what you believe and we will all be much happier citizens.
