How Does One Distinguish between Mind, Intellect and Wisdom?

On being asked this question I was inspired to write a hub about it, but the challenge would be to make it fun to read!

  • Our mind collects and categorizes impressions from our five senses. It's our biological computer.
  • Our Intellect observes and discriminates the useful from the useless and makes decisions.
  • Our wisdom comes with knowledge that is gained by having many experiences in life, or the memories from past lives (often in children).
  • Our Higher Self-mind is the creative intuitive mind that directs us in right and creative ways, but many individuals are under the control of their intellect, which is clearly predominant today in all facets of life.

"The Wisdom of Forgetfulness" or "Memory is the mother of all Wisdom." These two quotes express that time plays a role here.

Is taking an IQ test to learn about a person's intellect helpful?
Unfortunately, IQ is often misunderstood, misinterpreted and over-interpreted. IQ testing doesn't paint the full picture of a person's intelligence. To have a full understanding of a child's potential intellectually, educators should be taught how to tailor their teaching to suit the needs of their students, but that is not possible in today's education system.

It is my understanding that our subtle body, our “Higher self or Soul”, is composed of four different elements: the mind, intellect, ego, and memory. Our ego (or the personality type we have chosen to observe the reality around us) cares about the survival in 'this life' and uses fear and desire to drive our actions.

Both mind and intellect are a stream of consciousness. A thought is not the mind that thinks but a flow of thought is mind, like the flow of water is a river where creative principles like truths become empowered thoughts which can become talents.
It's my belief that our Human brain (computer) can still achieve things that are beyond artificial intelligence, but due to the mental control this is in jeopardy.

The Mind of All That Is

I see humanity as the thoughts and ideas of the mind of All that Is. There is no separation. Let's use an example:
Authors and other storytellers write about several characters in a novel or short story. They give the characters a name, a genre and a clear description; how they look and even the clothing, age and what their behavior is.

These novel character's lives are clearly born in the mind of the writer; therefore the writer is the creator, so the same goes for the concept that all of humanity lives in the mind of All That Is.
This is also the teaching of Buddhism. They do not believe there is a God separated from its own creation.

The Mind Dances to the Tune of the Five Senses

The mind seeks the help of intellect only when it is not able to decide on certain issues.

  • Consciousness is not the body or the brain, but it manipulates to produce the human mind.

    • The human Mind is the brain in action!

Mind functions comfortably with all the objects and emotions, except when our mind struggles to find a solution, so it hands the decision making over to the EGO which in turn uses our intellect. When the mind is in a state of confusion, the intellect comes to its rescue. The mind knows but cannot choose while the intellect does not know, but can choose. Thus both aspects have to work together to achieve a result. The emotional component of the mind is where varying intensity of likes and dislikes play a major role; often overpowering logic and reason. At the same time it is also a center of beautiful expressions of love, admiration, compassion, etc.
Our mind proceeds with its most liked job of dancing to the tune of the five senses. During this process, the mind often gets corrupted, afflicted, polluted or addicted due to repeated thinking patterns.

All Knowledge is Stored by our Intellect

Intellect is the purified and refined form of mind. Intellect is a product that develops from the mind, but does not have the impure qualities of the mind.

Intellect would be things we learned – things we gained understanding of because of mental effort, but the intellect cannot move beyond a certain point.

All human knowledge is stored by our intellect. We call that intellectual knowledge. In the path of spirituality we should start by using the intellect, not the mind, unless it reaches an understanding that our reality is an illusion.

This 'Ego' is only an Illusion of the Mind

Ego, in essence identifies with the mind and intellect as I am this, or I am not this. It perceives through having judgments. This is the reasons why self-realization is a very subtle process since the process is time-bound. According to various teachings ego is an illusion, since it involves identification with attributes that keep changing; attributes that have no self-existing nature because they are dependent and impermanent. The 'ego' is a component of the mind with a false notion that 'I am this'. This 'ego' is only a notion in the mind. It spins an illusion, a belief about the real us which it cannot know.

Our Akashic Records - Memory

Most of us agree that all objective knowledge that is gained is temporarily stored in our memory, which forms the basis for all recognition. We can build up our memory bank by gaining knowledge, by storing the information and retrieving it whenever it is needed for communication and transactions. New knowledge is built based upon past knowledge all stored in our memory.

How we access that stored memory is understood in different ways. In esoteric knowledge our memory is seen as our Akashic data base

Our Akashic Record is a dimension of consciousness that contains a vibrational record of our soul’s journey, either in this life or many others, simultaneously. The fundamental store-house of consciousness is well described if you visit this link.

Edgar Casey the American psychic was known for the uncanny way that he could read each person’s Akashic record to do with the health of that person.

Rudolf Steiner referred to Planet Earth’s Akashic Records. That is how he reported information about Atlantis, Lemuria, and the evolution of man and earth, etcetera.

How can we download useful information into our minds to store it into our Memory for later use?

Spiritual Knowledge is also Intellectual

We are Life, and life is the core of creation no matter on which planet, galaxy or universe life is found. The moment we think with our human mind about life, we have become interested in our own Spirit, our Soul, and when we think through our magnetic, active, creative right hemisphere we begin to create with the guidance of Spirit.

What is the difference between Intuition and Intellect?

Intuition would be things you have a hunch about, a feeling – things you know just because you know them without any intellectual effort. Intuition as commonly understood represents the whispering from within. Its the link to our infinite I AM. From our intuition, we assess the wisdom of our Soul-spirit.

The Intellect does not Understand Intuition

The intellect feels tense and stiff and contracted within the body while intuition leaves one feeling open, relaxed, expansive and at ease.

Intuition is a channel to our better higher self. This is the major difference between the intellect and the intuition or the heart. Intuition is pretty mysterious. Some people (especially women) are more intuitive than others. To see with vision is to use intuition.

Calibration of consciousness

The Calibration of Consciousness

Evolutionary concepts are being introduced to us every day, but none has the potential that Dr. David Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. has given to the people of Earth – which is to know your level of consciousness. According to Dr. Hawkins there are definable levels of consciousness on Earth ranging between 1 and 1000. 1 being the lowest level, and barely alive with 1000 representing the Christ Consciousness. Dr. Hawkins published this information in a book in 1995 called "POWER VS FORCE" Dr. Hawkins uses kinesiology techniques which have been scientifically proven to give accurate results. The Science of Kinesiology (Muscle Testing), has proven that the muscles of the body go weak for non-truths and strong for truths.

In my understanding 'Consciousness' uses our physical holographic human brain to create our reality, while the level of our true awareness of the I Am is the higher knowledge of the soul, with its soul-memory. It's our infinite true self. The more aware or awake we are, the more we understand the illusion of our human program. Our mind and intellect that is using our EGO persona can only reach up to level 400, which gives me some perspective about the terms we use to describe Christ Consciousness.

  • The lowest level of consciousness is at the physical plane associated with the physical body. When an individual identifies himself with his body and emotions, it is called ego.
  • The middle level of consciousness is often understood as our higher self. It’s neither pure nor impure and neither illuminating nor dark. This middle level of consciousness is called the lower soul level where our karmic account is embedded.
  • The highest level of consciousness is illuminating, pure and unpolluted and is outside the physical plane. This is where enlightenment is experienced. There is no judgement, no beliefs,no human perceptions and no time and space limitations. This is the highest level of consciousness rarely achieved during a human experience. This level is associated with Spirit

The Balance is between Consciousness and Intellect

When our EGOs leave our consciousness alone ( meaning there are no judgements), our intellect becomes more matured and refined, unaffiliated, unpolluted and can attain a higher state of self illumination.

Consciousness is awareness and there are several levels of consciousness. It’s our intellect that differentiates between these three types of consciousness.

Consciousness has three angles from which we mentally evolve. Having insights in order to shift our perceptions, will lead us to an understanding.

Can the Human Mind Perceive Multidimensional Realities?

Is the human mind more advanced in perceiving multidimensional realities than ever before in human history?

The first English language novelist Daniel Defoe had his story telling skills hand printed on paper during the time of the Great plague around 1660 in Europe, and from then on reading became a pastime and activity which sped up the creativity of the human mind.

It took another few hundred years for our visual skills of perceiving multidimensional realities on a global scale to become firmly established. In the last ten years most people have activated their multidimensional thinking skills through the Internet and other entertainment media to such an extent that many find it difficult to differentiate which reality they perceive.

This type of consciousness has escalated to this extent, through reading, writing, hearing radio scripts, seeing plays, movies, TV or even advertising. All this mental actively has awakened both the human thinking skill modes; the linear and the spatial.

The Magnetic Activity of the Global Mind

As you read the words that form this article, remember that every word has either a magnetic or an electric charge. We use both types of expressions unknowingly either in our speech, the written word or our thoughts that we send out telepathically. If our universe were to go back in time, we would eventually reach a point where our human consciousness is like it is on Earth at present.

The video above is all about how to change your reality. Dr Joe Dispenza's approach, taught in a very simple method, creates a bridge between true human potential and the latest scientific theories of neuroplasticity.

At this moment I’m a thinking human being who has to use words as stepping stones to the truth.

Thanks for your kind words about this article. Yes our mind is keeping us in an illusion that we are separate individuals by trapping our consciousness in our bodies but our intuition works outside our body, it being united with everything around us.

Very good, Nadine. I don't know how I missed this. I loved the video at the end. It was a great start to my morning.

"The intellect does not understand intuition"

This statement is so true. I was at a workshop recently in which we were being channeled information during meditation. The channeler kept saying to “put your mind aside and just let it come through.” He said "the mind doesn't understand the information."

Thank you Mel for your comment. Yes I do agree about that there is some kind of "force" at work within. I see the mind as a force field. I could make this hub 3x as long...and it still would not be enough to write about the mind itself.

You propose some very intriguing ideas here. There does seems to be some kind of "force" at work within us that is separate from the mind and does not necessarily depend on sensory input from our five sense. Great hub!
