The reason why sex education should be taught in schools
Why are we failing our children
Teenage pregnancy is at an all time high and schools do not want to teach sex education but only preach abstinence. While I agree that it is the only way to not get pregnant no one is listening. Not only is teenage pregnancy an issue but 1 in 5 teenagers has an Std and the highest rate of HIV are young people between the ages of 15 and 25. Why are our young people suffering because no one wants to teach them about the consequences of partaking in sexual behavior.
Sexual activity has consequences. Though the teen birth rate has declined to its lowest levels since data collection began, the United States still has the highest teen birth rate in the industrialized world. Three in 10 girls in will be pregnant at least once before their 20th birthday. Teenage mothers are less likely to finish high school and are more likely than their peers to live in poverty, depend on public assistance, and be in poor health. Their children are more likely to suffer health and cognitive disadvantages, come in contact with the child welfare and correctional systems, live in poverty, drop out of high school and become teen parents themselves. These costs add up, according to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, which estimates that teen childbearing costs taxpayers at least $10.9 billion annually. (ncls.org)
When you tell a teenager not to do something guess what THEY DO IT. Parents don't want to be responsible to talk to their children about sex these days so who should. HIV has increased in teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 and guess why? Because no one is talking to them about what will happen if you have sex.
In my high school days we had sex education and none of us died from it. It probably saved a lot of people from having unwanted children and ending up with STD's. Do you think we as a society are teaching girls to respect themselves enough not to have sex with boys? Absolutely not because in another study done girls 12 to 17 have the worst self esteem these days then they did 10 years ago.
Teens having sex
- According to teen sex statistics, 65 Percent of all teens have had sex by the time they are seniors in high school and this number is alarming.
- STD statistics indicate of that percentage, one in five teens has had four or more sexual partners
- Increased numbers in sexual partners creates a greater risk for a teen to contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or sexually transmitted infection (STI)
Teens with STDs
- Out of 19 million Americans that get a new STD infection each year, about 9.1 million of them are teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 24.
- STD stats show, among those teenagers having teen sex, about one in four will contract an STD prior to adulthood
Most common types of STDs among teens
Parents if you don't want to talk to your children about sex then find someone who will. It's not fair to the child or the baby to come in to a world that wasn't wanted. Most teen moms are losing their children due to child abuse. All children deserve to know the consequences of what happens if you have unprotected sex. Not wait until it's too late.
I saw this happen so many times when I was a case manager for the Healthy Start Program. Mothers bringing in their children that were pregnant and when you asked the parent have you ever talked to your daughter about sex their answer was no. Well how can you be mad at the child for having sex, when you did not make any attempt to educate them on the subject.
Pregnancy is one thing, but no child deserves to have an STD before they even make it to high school. They are going to have sex no matter what so teaching them about these consequences may scare them enough to not want to have sex. Knowing that once they get HIV there is no cure.
Come on people we need to help our children not hinder them.
