Your comments: Does free community college deserve a chance?

Pros of Free Community College

President Barack Obama came up with an excellent idea about putting a lot of disadvantaged kids through community college free of charge. Many people criticize this free community college initiative, but I myself am all for it. I personally happen to come from a poor family. My family never wanted to pay for my college education at all. I was mainly seen as a burden and my parents threw me out of my home as soon as they could. I ended up receiving about fifteen thousand dollars in cash from the Jewish Foundation for the Education of Women. The rest twenty thousand or so I had in Federal student loans which I was stuck paying off until I was thirty years off. My family never helped me one bit.

Pros of Free Community College

In order to graduate faster and get a job as soon as possible so that I could support myself and pay off my loans, I had to take six classes at a time in college and also work twenty hours a week at a job that I hated with a boss that abused me because she knew she could. Luckily, I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Marketing, which proved to be absolutely useless when looking for a job. I now work in Customer Service taking crap from ungrateful crazy customers. My current profession has nothing to do with my degree and pays a miserable salary. It is a tough job where you never get what you are worth and your employer never appreciates you because you do not have many specialized skills and therefore can be easily replaced. This type of job would be a nightmare for most people.

Pros of Free Community College

Thankfully, I survived. I am still struggling. However, I think to myself that if only free community college was available at the time that I was going through this hardship, I would have possibly stayed in school longer, would have gotten a better degree, would have gotten better internships, would have gotten a better job, would have enjoyed a better social life, would have taken better care of my health, and ultimately would have had a better life. So I wholeheartedly agree with Obama about having a free college education. Free community college should actually be renamed free college education. I think people in need should be able to attend college or any learning institution free of charge. Why should a poor person be limited from being all they can be? This does not seem right.

Pros of Free Community College

Yes, many people will say that we cannot afford this program and that tax payers would pay higher taxes. However, I think it is easier for a working person to pay a bit more in tax for the good of many, than for a non working poor person to foot the bill for such an expensive college education. I think the government should stop wasting resources on unnecessary things and focus on what really matters. In my opinion, free community college is a winning idea.
